LEGO® Play Book Reviews

I am SO glad to be done reading this book. I don't want to read another lego book as long as I live. That said, the images in this book were very inspirational. I now understand the appeal behind legos. You can make ANYTHING- limited only by your imagination (it helps to have a good variety of cool pieces too.) The crafty part of me gets it now. Still, it's a big book and we read it every night for close to a month. I'm ready for something with a plot! I gave it four stars because if you're LOOKING for something Legoey to read, this is your book.

I really inspirational book for young lego builders. It does not give instructions however if it has a special frame it will take some parts of so you can see how it is made. It is more about giving you ideas than giving you the instructions to actually build!

Love!!!! Micah has built several of the things in this book... Gave the boys many cool ideas and I think I need to get us our own copy!!
-
This book has some good ideas and picutres. But my kids do better just imagining and building on their own. That way they don't get frustrated looking for a piece that we may not own.

HUGE LEGO FAN!! I have 3 copies of this book! And they’re all the same. I love the inspirational builds in it and everything!!! I’ve probably read this 4-6 times and am never disappointed.

Underwhelming for a book with this many models. I liked the micro-scale models, especially the castles, space models, and creatures. I also liked the vehicles and outdoor activities, and the "postcards." I didn't like the "spooky" models.

There are a plethora of similar books on the market at the moment-- big, glossy, lightly-humorous approaches to building techniques, using a kid-friendly approach with lots of pictures and signifying real-life builders via minifigs that interact with the models thy have built. This is typical of the breed: bright and breezy, but perhaps lacking the depth of other volumes. It's aimed squarely at kids, and is enjoyable without focusing too deeply upon techniques or step-by-step instructions. Instead it serves more as an introductory tome, with the accent on fun and cramming as many completed builds onto the page as possible. It's light and frothy, but doesn't encourage repeated readings.

I did not have very high expectations about this book. I thought I would see a few good ideas, but many builds that are either impossible for me to reproduce at home (like the gorgeous models I see on MOCpages) or that look too childish for adults (like many of the MOCs Rebrickable suggests me to build). But not at all. Those are all models that I could rather easily build with the pieces I have at home, and they all look great! There are also many tips for alternate builds.
I have actually read it from start to finish, like a novel. I recommend it to all the LEGO apprentice builders of this world. -
I halfway think I should put this in my "reading books with chloe" shelf, but considering I was the one who picked this out at the library, I guess I should own up to it enough to leave it in my "read" shelf. ha.
It's a really cute book of fun ideas. I guess the only complaint is that they used a lot of specialty pieces, so for beginners to Lego it can be tough to try to copy the builds. Chloe really wanted to build the castles *exactly* as they were in the book, but our supply of grey bricks is tiny compared to these models. Guess we have some more Lego shopping to do. ;) -
I am an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego), and I am not ashamed to say it. Nothing takes me away from the stress of a day like sitting down and creating something out of these tiny, little bricks. This book gave me a lot of ideas that I can use right away to build all sorts of things, and me and my kids can't wait to try some of these out soon.

Fun and creative, but still requiring quite a few pieces that I doubt the library's collection has. But it was a good brainstorming piece for things like LEGO Tetris, Castle Defense (maybe tie it in to a tower defense game?), Famous Landmarks, and mm, Lego Food.
