***SPOILERS***
What the hell did I just read?!?!
Seriously.
WHAT THE HELL???
Throughout the entire book, my face must have been a dead-straight imitation of THIS-
It was almost as bad as reading
Resisting Her. I got NOTHING good out of it. And trust me, I was trying to. It had every cliche that could possibly fit in these 314 pages.
Instant love and adoration from the guy?
Virginal heroine who turns out to be amazing in bed?
Commitment-afraid manwhore who turns into the most faithful boyfriend?
Jealous, stalker ex-girlfriend?
Love interest is a possessive douche-bag?
Pregnancy drama?
And my last personal favourite one:
The refusal to communicate in a relationship which results in drama that is forced and over-the-top?
I'm sorry. This book wasn't just for me as I can clearly see I'm in the minority. Which is kind of a shame because it had great potential. At the start, I had that feeling that this was going to be a five-star book right up until Layla and Chase cross eyes. From then on, it spiraled down into a black abyss.
There were a few highlights though. For one, the naked Kade scene? LMFAO. And Nikki? I just wanted to hug her so much. They were my only two likable characters.
James could have been one of them but he was too busy playing 'Where's Wally?' with me. Like seriously, for half of the book he disappeared and I'd almost forgotten about him until he turned up at breakfast. And there wasn't a single explanation. He just turned up like that. And then left for the next half of the book. I swear he's even more difficult to find than Wally, and that's saying a lot since I took like 2/3 of Grade 5 to find that sneaky bastard.
The rest of the characters were extremely one-dimensional. They could have easily been cardboard cut-outs with the amount of depth that they had. It's like they jumped out of a soap-opera. Trust me on this one.
Wait, you know what?
It was a soap-opera written on paper. Written on paper that has been published and now is being passed around like a book. It's all a conspiracy.
The main heroine, Layla-
-was freaking unbearable. And so freaking unbelievable. She's a virgin and has been "saving herself" but is willing to go home with some random, hot stranger? Puh-leeeease. To be honest, she might have been intolerable, but she was the least intolerable. If she didn't run away all the time or act like she was the Queen of the Household, then I might actually like her.
Who knows. 50/50 chance of that happening. I mean, the person I really have a bone to pick with is Chase-
-who is trying to be portrayed as a sexy alpha male but really comes across to me as an over-controlling, possessive douche-bag. Oh, and he also swears a lot more than needed. I'm NOT a prude. In fact, I love swearing because it's a very nice relaxation technique. But Chase...god, he was like using it in EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE! And it wasn't only him. It was also every other single male in the book!!...But fuck, I didn’t even think. I’m not exactly used to having to explain my actions to anyone, or having a woman I intend to keep permanently.
"I didn’t think about Layla’s feelings. I fucked up okay!!”
“Why the fuck are you still taking care of her? She’s a grown ass woman and not your responsibility.” Kade growls.
“What happened was fucked up Chase, we all know it. We all felt it. But it’s been a year. Why are you still putting up with her shit?”
“She’s a fucking friend!” Chase is getting defensive.
“She’s a fucking blood sucker!”
See what I mean? And that was just ONE passage in the book. If I searched them all up, it would be akin to gouging my eyes out. Something like that. I hate that authors' version of a perfect guy is a male who's over-controlling and the opposite of laid-back, swears like he's breathing and very protective of their women.
In other words, Chase is a feminist's worst nightmare.
Chase turns to me, “ I don’t want you around her when she gets like that.”
Ummm, you can't just tell a person to stop seeing her best friend. Especially when her best friend just defended her in front of everybody.
Especially when that best friend is Nikki.
That's not protective at all. It's...creepy.
Other more creepy shit:
“You aren't going to that fucking animal shelter. I’ve already called up and said you can’t volunteer anymore!” Chase explodes...First he called my work and quit for me, and now this. But I know he’s just worried about the baby.
Dude, what is WRONG with you? He practically commanded you not to go to work at a place you love, after making you quit your job and this is what you're thinking???
Oh, it's all because he's worried about the baby.
Ummm, newsflash. NO, IT ISN'T!! What happens after you have the baby and you want to go back to work and get back to your life? Will Chase let you do that? No, it won't because he liked being a domineering male who wants to control every aspect your life.
My advice to you, Layla?
Get away as fast as you can.
Or you know, you can just marry the guy therefore tying yourself permanently to him and divorce won't be possible because he'll probably have already sucked out your soul and made you into his personal own housewife. And hey, you can cook and bake and you're already pregnant so you're halfway there. All you need to put on is an apron and be available whenever Chase needs a fuck, maybe push out a few more male children, and you'll be perfect.
Besides, it's not even "true love" between Chase and Layla. All that happened was they met and found each other ridiculously attractive and that was all the compatibility they had. Love at first sight, much? And everybody knows my position on instantaneous love.
They also had serious communication problems. Like ridiculously serious that Chase and Layla need their own marriage therapist once a week. Most of the problems that happened was because Chase evaded and dodged Layla at all times and refused to give her some proper answers.
Even Chase admits it.
Evaded, yes.
Dodged, maybe.
But never have I lied to her.
Technically, omission on purpose can be considered lying in a way, Chase. Ever think of that?
I also hate how women in the book are portrayed. The "evil, bad women" are complete bitches or sluts who sleep with every attractive person they come across. Whether they have a dick or not. Or they're like Layla. Layla, the perfect person. So perfect in fact, that within less than a day, her new male roommates totally have figured her out and made her one of their besties.
So unrealistic. If I was renting out a room, I would at least ask the person a few questions. And if they've passed, I would at least wait to get to know the person.
Questions that include:
Are you a serial killer or not? Tick yes or no.
Do you have a penchant for murdering your roommates in your sleep? Tick yes or no.
Tiny stuff like that. It's not that hard.
The only exceptions to this women stereotyping are Nikki and Chase's mother. But then, Nikki is the best friend and Chase's mother is related to him so there can't be any way of putting them in a bad light.
And don't even get me started on Aubrey. She was so one-dimensional, it wasn't even funny. It was just pathetic.
Only 1 star for that naked Kade scene. That was pure comedic entertainment! -
Thats Me! ^ Because I really enjoyed the book! :D
It had a great story with AMAZING characters. A nice read~
And a bitch too ;)
And some amazing drama! :D
I actually started this book with very low expectations because it seemed like it would have a fucked up pace and a freak chick but I was wrong. 10% into the book I saw that the fucked up paced settled down and the chick was pretty nice and yo types ;)
Chase... Just imagian a REALLY hot guy with tatts who is sweet yet dirty and rides a harley ;)
A few words pop into my head thinking about him.. HOT, SEXY and POSSESSIVE >>I like!!!
I loved Kade and James too! CANNOT wait for their books! I have a feeling that they are going to rock, especially James' book. I want to know more about him.. Mysterious men just turn me on and turn me curious ;) hahaha -
Dissapointed! Contains spoilers
The story starts off nicely.. Although i didn't like the insta-feelings Kade and James had for her.. but it was interesting enough..
And then plotholes!!!!
She didn't know they were brothers..
She is virgin but the moment she meets a total stranger in a club she leaves with him and falls asleep in his car.. They end up having a relationship and for 2 months she doesn't know he has a different dad..
He was a commitmentphobe but had a relationship for a year with Aubrey..
Can you say Insta-love?
Here we are dealing with a severe case of it.. Don't get me wrong i love instant connection.. But not that way..
This book was so overdone it didn't make sense.. It felt forced most of the time.. The jealousy, the stupid way they broke up the first time, the whole thing with Aubrey's pregnancy..It only seemed like the authors put it there to give a sad and deep note in the story.. But for me it didn't work at all..
Also people and situations were thrown in at various moments only to mysteriously dissapear in a blink of an eye.. By the way it contained many elements from other well known books but that didn't work either..
For the first time i almost wished for a NO HEA! And that coming from me who i was shipping for Caleb and Livvie (Dark Duet) from the first page it has to mean something..
THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK
It wouldn't be fair if i didn't point out the good qualities too so..
-I loved Kade - he was smart and made me laugh..
-I loved the nicknames
-I liked Nikki and James too.
-His mom was so sweet.
-Ryder was hot - i smell a book for the sexy rocker with the tats.
-The prologue from Chase's POV.
I will read the next book because i think it was just an awkward start and the authors have the potential to write something better and because it's the story of my fav character Kade.. -
BR with Jo and Sammy!
I'll start off by saying that I didn't really know what to expect with this book (or the series) when the author Chantal Fernando contacted us through the blog with the opportunity to read and review a few of the books in the Resisting Love series, Chase being the 1st book. It sounded interesting to me, but I just wasn't sure what I'd feel about it. I can honestly tell you that Chase surpassed EVERY expectation I had of the book! I absolutely fell in love with this book and in turn couldn't wait to read more of the series!
When this book starts out Layla, a college freshman is looking for a place to live. She's checked out many places, and after many failed attempts at finding a place to live, she finds herself at a house where she decides to settle on a room that is for rent where she'll be living with 3 men. She's first introduced to James when looking at the room for rent and later she meets Kade. They tell her that the 3rd man in the house isn't around very often. She develops a bond with James and Kade and they are very protective of Layla. James and Kade absolutely love having Layla living with them. Both men are playboys who are so protective of Layla that if any of the women that come around disrespect Layla, they kick them out. They don't tolerate anyone disrespecting Layla and want her to feel at home with them. One morning she hears a voice, whom she assumes is the 3rd man that lives in the house, kicking the woman out that he had sex with. She still never meets him face to face and is told by Kade and James that because he's so rarely around, she'll probably not meet him.
One night, Layla is out with her best friend and they go to a club, it's there that she meets a man named Chase. There is an instant attraction between them and she ends up going home with him that night. When she wakes the next morning and walks out of Chase's bedroom, she discovers that she is at her own home. Now it all clicks into place for her and she realizes that Chase is the 3rd man living at the house! Layla learns that Chase is Kade and James' half brother.
Chase develops deep feelings for Layla, and Layla has deep feelings for Chase, so they decide to give their relationship a chance, much to Kade and James dismay. They are worried that Chase, being the man-whore that he is, will end up hurting Layla but what they don't realize is that for Chase, Layla is like no other woman he's ever met.
I won't give away anymore of the story, I will say that Chase and Layla do have misunderstandings along the way and unfortunately for Layla, Chase's ex, Aubrey is determined to use hers and Chase's past to try to cause problems between Chase and Layla and try to get him back.
Throughout the book, there is hurt, deception, betrayal, hidden secrets, secrets revealed, shocking truths, major twists, unconditional love and so much more.
There is also quite a bit of humor in this book, so you are never lacking something to chuckle about. I went into this book not knowing what to expect and came out of it wanting more of this series immediately AND I found myself a new book boyfriend in Chase Jackson! This book is DEFINITELY going on my favorites shelf!
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who wants a dramatic love story with a bit of humor mixed in! I am SO thankful to Chantal Fernando for offering copies of several books in this series for Smexy Bookaholics to read and review! This is a book I absolutely loved and will absolutely read again in the future!
Some of my favorite quotes from this book:
I don't like confrontation, and I don't like to fight. I don't like to get involved; I like my life drama free. But that doesn't mean I won't fight back. I don't let anyone disrespect me. People tend to mistake my kindness for weakness. Their mistake. ~Layla
~~~~~~~~
"I'm saying that for you- with you, it will be different. I will be different. You are different. I want you to trust me, to take a gamble on me. Just give me a chance, Layla. I promise you that I will handle with care. that I will make it so I'm worthy of you." ~Chase
~~~~~~~~
"You drive me crazy, you know that? I don't think I've ever been so crazy over a woman before, and I'm not sure how to handle it. So you are going to have to bear with me Layla." ~Chase
~~~~~~~~
He sighs. "You undo me Layla" I lean my forehead against his and sigh in contentment. "The feeling is mutual."
~~~~~~~~
"You mean so much more to me, Layla. I understand I'm a little bit rusty with this relationship stuff, but I'm trying here, baby. I've never had to chase a woman before, it's frustrating as hell. But I know you are worth it, so I'm never going to stop wanting you."
~~~~~~~~
"You are mine, Layla, no man gets to even look at what is mine."
~~~~~~~~
"You're not getting rid of me, Layla. I will wait for you for fucking ever."
~~~~~~~~
"I love you, Layla." He whispers in my ear. " I love you so fucking much."
My heart stops.
"You consume me, angel."
~~~~~~~~
"I've always been yours, Chase."
Chase kisses me again before saying, "I always knew that, Layla, I was just waiting for you to figure it out."
~~~~~~~~
"I don't know if I deserve you, but I'm too selfish to care. You are amazing, Layla."
~~~~~~~~
"You are my everything, Layla, I never thought in a million years I would be so blessed to find someone who is perfect like you are."
~~~~~~~~
"Layla, I love you, everything about you. I always have and I always will. From the moment I saw you, I knew that no one would ever compare to you."
~~~~~~~~
"I'll always take care of you baby, we were born to love each other." ~Chase
~~~~~~~~
Layla is all I need, to breathe, to live, to thrive.
Layla Crawford is screwed. She has one week until her college classes start and she hasn’t found a place to live yet. She visited several potential rentals but all of them have been horrific so far. Resigning herself to the fact that she might not find a place to live close to the university, Layla drives to the last potential rental on her list. Thankfully, she likes the house and the potential roommate she meets so Layla moves in with Kade and James, two very attractive guys, and their mysterious landlord who is never home.
Shortly after moving into the house, Layla and her best friend Nikki decide to go out dancing. While at the club, Layla locks eyes with Chase, a handsome and tatted guy with whom she has an instant spark with. The only problem? He is surrounded by women. Chase eventually blows off the women vying for his attention and spends the night with Layla. After that night, he decides that he needs to claim Layla as his. There is something about her that makes him want to give up his playboy ways and become a one woman man. Their relationship isn't easy, however, obstacles from Chase's past keep threatening to push Layla away.
What I Liked
*Layla is a girl who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and stand up for herself and those she cares about.
“I don’t like confrontation, and I don’t like to fight. I don’t like to get involved; I like my life drama free. But that doesn't mean I won’t fight back. I don’t let anyone disrespect me. People tend to mistake my kindness for weakness. Their mistake.”
Though Layla acted immature and spoiled at times, I liked her character overall.
*I loved all three guys: Chase, James, and Kade. Even though all three of them are total man whores, their relationship with Layla was really sweet. Kade is probably my favorite though because he was hilarious and apparently he is HUGE in all the right places ;)
Minor Things I Struggled With
*The writing style felt rushed and choppy at times. There were times when I wish the authors had gone into more detail instead of ending the scene where they did.
*This is going to sound strange but Layla fell asleep a lot and at the most inconvenient moments. There were a few times that I couldn't figure out why she fell asleep, given what was going on around her. It just bugged me *shrugs*
*I have seen in other reviews where people thought this story was predictable and somewhat unbelievable. I can understand where they are coming from. Layla finding a place to live, with three hot and very rich guys, who instantly like her and want to protect her is a little unbelievable. I also saw most of the drama coming before it even happened. Regardless of this, I still really enjoyed the story. It was entertaining, the characters made me laugh, and despite the predictability of the story, I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to see what happened next.
Overall, this is a quick and fun read so I would give it 3.5-4 stars. I definitely plan to read the rest of the series to find out more about Kade and James =) -
BR with Sara and Sammy!
This book was AMAZING! I really enjoyed it A LOT! I have to say... who wouldn't want to live in a house with 3 "hot sexy alpha males" who treat you like a princess! This book had the romance, drama, sex and at times had me laughing so hard I had tears running down my face.
Layla was a student looking for a place to live. Someplace where she could gain some independence and some distance from her overbearing and at times overprotective parents. After looking at a few places she finds a room to rent in a house where there would be 3 other roommates. There, she meets Kade and James. Layla is told the other roommate who is also the landlord was not there often and she may never meet him. Layla hits it off immediately with James and Kade. She soon finds out that they are playboys and there are a lot of women coming and going along with a lot of parties but she takes it all in stride. James and Kade become very protective of Layla and treat her like a little sister. If anyone at all stepped out of line with her, Kade and James were there to protect and defend her.
Layla decides to go out one night with her best friend Nikki who doesn't live far from Layla. When they get to the bar, they are having a great time when Layla is drawn to a man from across the room. She later meets the man she was so drawn to at the beginning of her night and finds out his name is Chase Their attraction to each other was very instant and intense. Layla ends up leaving with Chase and going home with him. When she wakes up the next morning, she is alone in his bed. She walks out of the room and is instantly in shock, realizing she is actually in her own house and she has slept with the third roommate, who happens to be the landlord, Chase.
Chase was a well known playboy, but now that he has met Layla, his playboy days are over. He will stop at nothing to make Layla realize that she is the one for him. Layla knows of his playboy past, but can't resist the sexy, charming, romantic side of Chase. He pulls out all the stops to show her just how much he wants her. Their relationship is not without their ups and downs, but they make it through with the love they have for one another.
This book was wonderfully written from front to back. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning and held it until the end. It made me want to read more. I would highly recommend this book! I will definitely be reading it again!
Ok this book can be summed up in one sentence (excuse my language here)
"I FUCKED UP!"
Everything this " hero" did was this!
1- He lets an ex sleep in his bed
2- He has an ex on his lap
3- He is caught kissing his ex and lied about his relationship with her.
4- He routinely has girls around that he and his brothers have shared in the past
5- He lies and hides things from her at every turn
6- He brings her home to his dad so that she is verbally accused by him ( ok so that's not really his fault but man how much more bullshit can she put up with)
Three strikes and your out right?
Nope the heroine just keeps coming back for more.
I was so mad!
He is young and stupid but she puts up with his sorry ass. So I guess it's her fault also.
I think I would have been ok if he had taken steps to insure that she would not have come in contact with his past whores or sluts.
All these guys are major whores so I will not read more about this messed up nonsense.
This book was mostly,
Drama, drama, and more drama!
Now I need me a shot of tequila! At least the girl had good taste in alcohol!
Salute! Cheers! Bottoms up! -
4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Liked it!
Read in June, 2013People tend to mistake my kindness for weakness. Their mistake.
The next morning, I’m in the kitchen, fully dressed, when in walks Kade. Butt naked. I scream and cover my eyes with my hands. “Kade!” I yell.
Kade. In the shower. Butt naked—obviously. But that isn’t even the worst part. Kade isn’t alone. I scream.
drag my bag into Chase’s room and dump it on the floor. I turn on the light and get the shock of my life. There is a girl, with long brown hair. Asleep. In our bed. Wearing what appears to be very little clothing. Screw this. This is where shit hits the fan I guess.
Aubrey is standing up, facing towards me, arms wrapped around Chase. And she is kissing him. She sees me, smirks, and pushes herself closer to Chase.
2-2.5 ⭐⭐’s
This is a tough one to rate. I’ll round up because I got this years ago as a freebie, but before spending $4, you should know that it’s not a serious read. The characters are very immature, the OW are OTT, the drama is young person drama. (secrets, running, yelling, ect.)
Layla meets Chase at a bar and decides to go home with him. She wakes up the next day and while leaving his room realizes she’s in her apartment. Chase is the mysterious roommate she hasn’t met and heard rudely kicking a chick out a week prior.
Chase is the stereotypical manwhore rich playboy that drives an Aston Martin and has banged pretty much every woman they encounter. Layla is the typical super-hot cool chick that lives with dudes and attracts males like a magnet. She’s not like other girls in that she hates all women except her obligatory outspoken BFF that’s equally cool.
The next 200-ish pages are filled with Chase constantly chasing/kissing Layla’s ass because he’s a newbie with relationships and constantly fucking up… or some former hookup is popping up.
Bottom Line- This was ok for me, but only because I enjoy OW drama… and there’s a ton of it... and can get behind a crazy OTT silly Jerry Springer/wine read after a stressful week. I would not recommend it for anyone looking for adulting, romance, or realistic feels… Or anyone that values safety. (no cheating) I won’t continue with the series. -
DNF @ 25% - pretty sure this is a 14-yr old's Wattpad entry. So juvenile. Instalove so insta that I had to check for missing pages. Premise is ridiculous. Slutty virgin to boot. She's ready to jump any vaguely good looking guy. Good thing she inexplicably moved in with a house full of hot college dudes. The H owns a strip club.
read this long time ago
I was given this book from the authors to read before release as a beta reader.
This read was a rollercoaster. At one point I was happy, the next I was sad and at some points I was fuming!
So, the question is “What do you do when you meet a guy, a guy you really like, only to find that he lives with you?” You freak out, right? Well, this is Layla’s reality.
I loved the relationship between her roommates, Kade and James. Together they make a seriously funny threesome who enjoys each other’s company. Layla is sweet, funny and spirited. She has a fiery side too. All of which, I think, is a great combination in a lead female. Then comes Chase…sigh…and the man is smitten. He is a total alpha! Protective (maybe even overprotective), loving and dominant…and seriously hot.
Layla and Chase together are awesome but are dealt some serious bumps in the road. Will they be able to overcome them?
Chase was a great read and a top debut novel the authors. Highly recommended! -
self note : ow ,drama, H letting ex sleep in his bed,ow sitting on his lap(he did push her off ) H shared women with his brothers. h bumping into all his ex lovers (she is renting a room from the H ) . this is just to much drama for me. just something I don't want to read about right now.
-
First let me just say that I was expecting this to be raunchy, but was pleasantly surprised to find that it is nothing of the sorts!
Don’t get me wrong, I love my raunchy borderline psychotic reads, but I needed a break from the royal mind fuck Unbeautifully left me in, and Chase gave me just that.
Simply put, it was a really enjoyable read and I need more of this series…like yesterday.
Also there’s the little fact that Chase is an Alpha male.
*dies* I freaking love me some alpha males!
Let me wipe this drool off of my face and we’ll continue.
3.5 Stars!
This one was enjoyable enough I suppose. I found the dialogue a bit cheesy at times and the story rather predictable. But it was a short, quick read....that I read straight through in a matter of hours.
The story begins with Layla going to University and renting a room from three guys--James, Kade and Chase. Chase is never around but Layla develops a close brother/sister relationship with James and Kade.
One night while out at the bar, Layla meets Chase for the first time, not knowing that he's the third roomie. He brings her home...to her house. Chase is a playboy and has had many women. Layla and Chase are trying to build a relationship but Chase's past keeps getting in the way. One someone in particular. Chase isn't open with Layla about some things from his past preventing them from being able to move forward.
Eventually they get on the same page and everything works out. It was almost too much back and forth for me though. However, this was a standalone with a HEA so that's always a plus.
The author did do a good job of setting up the other characters books.....leaving them just mysterious enough to have you wanting to know more.
I would recommend this if you're looking for a quick read. It had a little bit of everything....humor, angst, sexy times, an alpha male, and a few swoon worthy moments. -
I am in the serious minority but I stand by my review. The book was very rushed and there was no development in the relationships between any of the characters. The explanations for the sudden protectiveness of Layla by Kade and James were unbelievable and desperate. Things happened way too quickly from Layla moving into the guys house to Chase’s obsessive behavior. There was no real development between Layla and Chase, I felt absolutely no connection whatsoever. One morning he is the mysterious landlord that night he is her overly jealous, possessive, obsessive boyfriend who wants to take control of her life. Then Layla, she was extremely immature. I understand that Chase had a sordid sexual history, but jeez she would go off for the smallest thing that someone else initiated with Chase being an innocent bystander. You cannot break up with the guy then get mad if he is with someone else or does something that, I don’t know, a SINGLE guy would do. Ugggg I hate when the heroine is written like an idiot. I always, ALWAYS wish for a HEA, I really don’t like reading stories that don’t have one. Unfortunately, this was one story where I wish Chase would have told Layla to just fuck off and went about his merry way. I am sorry to say that I can’t rate this very high and probably won’t read it again.
-
I had this series for months and I don't know why I didn't read them immediately because once I started reading the first book, I love it already and continued to read the series. The books were wonderfully written from start to finish. And I read her other books too. Waiting for her next book.
-
I had the opportunity to read the arc for this book in return for an honest review.
Layla Crawford is a great character. She feels real and honest, like she would be a normal girl we would all hang out with. There isn't anything too pretentious or irritating about her. She is by no means perfect, which makes her instantly likable Layla is a great name too....I have no idea why that is such a thing for me, but it is. Layla is looking for a place to stay while she goes to school and, like so many of us during our college years, ends up looking at places with creepy men or that are run down. Gosh how I miss being young and poor...
She ends up finding a room to rent with incredibly hot brothers who live in a beautiful house. Gotta be honest, not one of my experiences in college =). And, like any sane woman would, she jumps at it! Which leads us to her living with gorgeous men and leading a life of walking that fine line of "do I go for one of them or not". Layla being a smart girl, refrains from making a move on them, and instantly becomes one of their favorite people.
Ah...the brothers. There are three of them actually. There is Kade, James, and of course Chase. Layla become close to Kade and James right away. They have spend the most time with her when she moves in and they treat her like a little sister a lot of the time. But I did have to say, they seem a little too possessive at times with her. The third brother, Chase, is someone who is rarely around. When he is it seems he is there for a night to sleep with someone and then he is off again.
All three brothers are known for being manwhores. I am talking true manwhores. They share women, rarely see the same girl twice, and when they are done with you, well, they are done with you. But for some reason they all try to shelter Layla from this. Almost like they feel the need to protect her. Keep her away from all the bad influences and such.
When Chase meets her by chance at a club things get hot. So hot in fact that she ends up in bed with him, not realizing he is the mysterious third brother she has yet to meet. And that is a fun trip in and of itself. I actually laughed pretty hard when I realized she had just been nailed by the third brother and he basically took her home unbeknownst to either of them.
Chase does a 180 in personality. Suddenly he is faithful, caring and devoted to only Layla. Which if I am honest, kind of threw me a bit. It seemed like an abrupt change in personality. But after you realize he is the guy in the beginning of the book who saw Layla years earlier and wanted her then, it makes sense. But like Kade and James, Chase is so possessive at times he borderlines scary.
Their relationship is anything but conventional and it moves at the speed of light. They hit quite a few speed bumps but they always find their way back to each other. I do have to say the scene where Layla gets on stage had me in stitches. I LOVED her spirit! She was a never back down kind of girl, and I can appreciate that.
They have a lot going on at the end of the book, and I am not going to give anymore secrets away. But I will say this, I loved the ending. A lot.
This is a debut novel for Chantal Fernando and Dawn Martens, and ladies, please allow me to say congratulations and bravo on a book well done!
I give this 4 lipsticks! I can't wait to see what they come up with next!
Oh where oh where to begin for this review..... TOTALLY F%^&*$# AWESOME BOOK! Okay I want to curse some more but I will refrain from doing that.My God I have never read a book so dam funny and full of roller coaster emotions. One minute I would be laughing and the next minute I would get pissed off because some people just don't get it when they are not wanted so they try and ruin things for others. But let me tell you Chase and his brothers are Greek Sex God's because man oh man these boys are hot as hell but they also protect what is theirs and they are very fierce in protecting Layla.
Chase Jackson is a player and a business man. He is gorgeous and he knows it. He does not do relationships but instead ops for one night stands and he is very up front and honest with the women when he picks them up. They know the drill it is chew and screw and then goodbye. He never does a girl twice is his motto until he is at a party and sees a beautiful girl. His heart starts racing and he is so entranced and enthralled by her he can not keep his eyes off of her. Only one small problem the girl he is looking at is his best friends cousin and Ryder is not having any off that and he makes Chase promise to stay away from his cousin. Chase does but still keeps watching the girl from across the party. Chase knows if she looks his way he will break his promise but Ryder doesn't give him that chance because Ryder tells them it's time to leave the party. So Chase leaves behind the girl that has made his heart wake up.
Fast forward some time and Chase is in a club with all these girls surrounding him and he is on the prowl for his next girl when he spots her the girl from the party a while ago Ryder's cousin. He knows he has to have her but he is not sure if she will even look at him because he has all these girls all over him. But then the unthinkable happens and she looks at him and smiles and Chase loses his shit and pursues her.
Layla and her best Nikki are out celebrating Layla finding an apartment near her college. They go to the club ready to party like no one's business when Layla and Nikki spot this gorgeous guy across the room. Nikki realizes he is staring at Layla and tells Layla to look and when she does her breath is caught in her throat because this guy is finer than any guy she has ever meet. As Layla and the stranger look at each other Layla knows she is in trouble. Chase approaches her and they go off. They share on kiss and Chase is a goner and so is Layla.
This is where the story gets good so dam good that I will not ruin it for you but I will say this. Chase will have to work very hard to get Layla because his past will come back full force to haunt him and Layla will have to read through the bullshit to see what is true and what is not. Jealous women can be bitches and she is going to have to stand by the man she loves. Chase has never done this whole relationship thing before and he wants it bad so badly he is willing to do whatever it takes to have his Layla.
Will Chase be able to get Layla? Will Layla be able to deal with the craziness that comes with Chase? This is a MUST READ BEACH BOOK! Plus you will need some ice cubes to cool you off or just the beach water because this book is hotter than hell! -
You know, I thought this would be a perfect 3.5 star read but then the whole second half of the book happened and I am gladly rounding it up to 4 stars.
I'm just not the type of reader who falls for a manwhore character, and this book had plenty of them. The whole sharing the girls thing was just... you know, gross.
However - Kade and James. OMG. JAMES, I need to know more about you!
I love the way the authors sort of set up all these secondary characters - they made you love them, throwing bits and pieces of their stories in but not making it about them. I really really loved James and I barely know anything about him! Actually, maybe that's why...
I thought Layla and Chase had good chemistry. It's a bit of an insta-love, but not really because of the way they set it up.
They compliment each other really well, and I thought that it was believable he would change for her - by the end of the book the poor guy was just plain whipped.
Truth be told, I kind of spent the book hating on him. I love my alpha male hero but he was just... alpha male to the max. I did learn to love him by the end because I understood him better.
The book has quite a few LOL moments and I already mentioned I liked the secondary characters. The heroine is strong willed and snarky, though a virginal one. I found myself interested in Nikki and Sasha's stories as well, and even the wicked witch that is Aubrey. Seriously, she's a psycho.
There are a couple of mildly graphic sex scenes in the book, and a lot of cursing.
A couple of things that bothered me were just a brief switch of POV now and again, many, many typos that sort of distracted me from the story. The beginning felt a little rushed.
Overall, I have to say I did enjoy Chase a lot more than I thought I would. And since this is a debut novel I'm expecting a lot more from Kade. -
So I'm telling you right now this is a 'get comfy' book! You're not going to want to put it down! The instant you start reading you catch the intrigue and then it just continues! I loved this book! It had moments of hilarity, anger, sadness, but most of all romance. Get ready for a ride with a book full of alpha males. You will meet Chase, Kade and James and you will fall in love instantly!!
This is obviously going to be a series and I'm totally ecstatic about that because I want more from these two new authors. They write magic together!!
Meet Layla. College girl looking for a place to live and finds a home full of brothers that take her in and bond instantly. But when she meets the mysterious landlord and finds he's none other than a playboy that has left a trail of broken hearts she may find him too hard to resist but at the cost of what? Chase and Layla come across many obstacles to gain a common ground in their relationship. He's really bossy and arrogant and well basically alpha! You know how that's gonna go! What's his is his and it doesn't matter what anyone says. I think he's totally hot and he's sexy as they can get! This romance is a whirlwind of ups and downs and you won't regret picking up this book! If you love a book with dominant, sexy men this is a book for you! I am amazed by the writing and give it my thumbs up!!!
*btw* I feel like I should touch on the love scenes in this book! my opinion is they are tastefully done and amazingly hot. They capture the connection of the couple and its awesome to read!! -
~I keep staring at her, hoping for her to glance up.
To notice me.
To see if she feels this attraction I'm feeling for her her.
I've never felt anything like it.
More than lust.
Something.. else.
Something the makes me want to protect her, cherish her.
I know I don't deserve her.
But that doesn't mean I'll stop wanting her.~
After several failed attempts to find a new place to stay, Layla finally finds what she is looking for when she answers James and Kade's roommate ad.
Sharing with two hot guys and (one she hasn't met)
Layla sets the ground rules.
NO GETTING INVOLVED WIHT THE GUYS SHE LIVES WITH!
All of that is about to change when she finds her self in a club and spots him, Chase.
He can't keep his eyes off of her.
~"Countless women in this club, but fuck, for some reason I can't keep my eyes off you."~
When Layla meets Chase it's insta attraction.
But Layla's rule is about to broken when they realise they actually live together!
Hot, sexy, alpha possessive, Chase doesn't do commitment and just uses women for sex.
But just one look at Layla and he just know she is different.
Chase vows that he will change his ways for her.
~"I don't want this to goo too fast, I want us to take our time, get to know each other. I want this to be more than sex." ~
Chase has a harem of ladies throwing themselves at him. Constantly having to watch these women throw themselves at him, causes a few dramas for Layla.
But Chase is true to his word and only has eyes for Her.
However Chase is keeping a few secrets. When Layla finds out, she pushes Chase away. Too hurt to forgive she won't allow Chase back in.
Chase isn't giving up and will do anything to prove Layla he is worthy of her love.
~"I'm done, Chase. You hurt me. I'm not going to blindly just give you that power again."
"Then I will earn it. You're mine baby. And I'm yours. I can't even explain it. We just… fit. I knew it then, and I know it now."~
Can Chase win back his love? Or will the final secret distroy everything between them?
I really enjoyed this.
Steam factor wasn't smoking hot, but still slightly steamy.
I loved Chase hahaha he was total Alpha!
When she locked him out and he was about to drill the door off… Hahhah so funny!
Hated Aubrey! I just want to…
I was surprised this was set in Australia. Normally I can pick it up, being an Aussie and all, but I didn't until Sydney was referenced.
I was pleasantly surprised.
I loved James and Kade. I loved their friendship with Layla.
I can't wait for the next in the series.
I LOVE IT!
SO....
THIS STORY is very sweet and beautiful.
THE HEROINE at first was roommate at the house she wants to live in and at first she doesn’t know that the roommates she have A OLDER BROTHER that owns the house which is THE HERO.
What really bugs me about this book that in has OW. WELL THAT WAS BEFORE THE HERO MEET THE HEROINE but still annoying (rolling my eyessss)
THE HEROINE is very sweet and very beautiful. She has a tan skin and mix Australian-Sri Lanka that MAKES A LOT OF GUYS ATTRACTED TO HER.
THE HEROINE IS A VIRGIN.
THE HERO IS VERY OTT POSSESSIVE PROTECTIVE ALPHA MALE. He WANTS THE HEROINE sooo bad...
THE MEETING BETWEEN THEM makes my eyes rolls because THE HERO was with OW that’s not in a relationship with him BUT STILL annoying. And immediately the HERO went GRAB THE HEROINE because HE LIKES HER SINCE SHE WAS 15 i think.
• MANY JEALOUS SCENE FROM THE HERO
• DRAMA OM AND OW TOO.
• NO CHEATING
• there’s a separation when the HERO let his ex sleep on his bed while they were partying at the house because he thinks it’s okay CAUSE HE WASN’T WITH HER AND DOESN’T JOIN HER. THE EX only came anyway cause his brothers was friends with her and the ex invites herself in. But that makes THE HEROINE break up with him at first. SECOND SEPARATION is when the HEROINE SAW THE OW kiss him only for one second and then HERO IMMEDIATELY BACK AWAY. OW just wants to make the HEROINE JEALOUS because OW saw the heroine was coming to the office so the ow made her stupid move. BUT AFTER THAT THE HERO CHASE THE HEROINE and that what makes them separate.
•HAPPY ENDING FOR SURE
•THE SMUT SCENES IS HOT
•NO VIOLENT
• WHEN THEY SEPARATED they still LOYAL.
> i want to make this 5 stars because THE HERO IS VERY OTT POSSESSIVE WHICH I LIKED. But because it has OW and the DRAMA WAS SO UNNECESSARY for me so that made me add only four stars. I WANT THE HERO never talks to the ex but he did it because they both have a past that involved a fake child WHICH YOU WILL GET IT BY THE END OF THE BOOK. BUT still annoying! So yeah thats it. -
Well, shoot. I really thought I was going to like this one. I mean I pretty much go crazy for rich, entitled, bossy leading men. I'm an easy sell! That being said, I should have been in heaven with Chase. Unfortunately, a major turn off for me is what I have started calling "manufactured drama". It's popping up in more and more books and it was in total OVERKILL in Chase.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, here are some examples: That means if you have a new girlfriend and you already have a bad reputation and alot to prove, you don't let girls sit in your lap. You don't let ex-girlfriends sleep in your bed. You don't let ex-girlfriends close enough to grab you and suck face with you (on more than one occasion). You don't keep major secrets that are bound to come out. You don't hang out at topless bars. You don't have crazy ass parties. You don't take girlfriend to toxic parents house so he can make her feel like nothing.
Manufactured drama causes all kind of angst that would have been very easy to avoid. Unfortunately, thats all this book was. The story would go to one situation that could have been avoided to the next sitation that could have been avoided and on and on and on. The characters made nothing but bad decisions which were driven by extreme immaturity.It's disappointing because I actually liked the chemistry between Layla and the brothers alot. I thought it was very sweet how they were protective of her and enjoyed reading about the time they spent together.
I know I'm in the minority by not liking this book but honestly, I barely could finish it...I'm going to save myself a headache though (as well as some disappointment) and skip reading anything else in this series. "SAY NO" to fake angst! -
Def my fave book in the series I really liked both Chase and Layla.
-
4 1/2 stars I picked this book up after hearing how great it was and how possessive the hero was, because that is my favorite part of a book. I like my book men crazy possessive, jealous, stalkerish, determined, and willing to do anything and everything for their girl. Boy oh boy did this book fit the bill Chase is insane with jealousy toward anyone who so much as looks at Layla even his brothers who love Layla like a sister. Is he stalkerish oh yeah he is, and he's crazy in love with Layla. Layla was strong(but not manly strong) and she wasn't taking crap from other woman who wanted Chase or from Chase when he did something wrong.
Was this book perfect no I wanted to strangle Chase for keeping so much from Layla(ugh when will these book people learn they are only causing themselves more problem and me heart palpitations). BUT through it all I loved Chase because everything and I mean EVERYTHING he did was for Layla(sigh). Layla is in need of a place to stay she is starting college and so far every place she looks is bad. When she goes to the last house she meets James an immediately hits it off with him and decides this is the place she will stay. James and his brother Kade live together with the owner of the house, and Layla and the brothers soon become friends.
One night while Layla is out with her best Friend Nikki she see's a man who can't take his eyes off of her even though he has woman all around him vying for his attention. After a night together Chase offers to give them a ride and after dropping off Nikki Layla agrees to go to his house but falls asleep on the way home. When Layla wakes she finds out that she is not only in Chases bed but she is also in her own house. Chase is none other than the owner and Kade and James brother. Chase saw Layla when she was seventeen and wanted her like no other but she was off limits and he wasn't good enough for her. Now three years laster when he see's Layla at a bar he knows he can't not make his move.
When Chase finds out Layla is his new room mate he is ecstatic, he has wanted her for years and he wants more than anything to be with her. As Layla and Chase begin a new relationship people from Chases extensive past(yes woman) keep popping up and one in particular has her sights set on removing Layla from Chases life so that she can take Layla's place. And secrets Chase keeps to protect Layla get out and threaten the only happiness Chase has ever had or wanted. So I really loved this book, it took me a minute to get into the writing style of Chantal Fernando and Dawn Martens but I really enjoyed it once I did, she wrote so well I wanted to reach into my kindle and strangle someone yes a woman (shaking my head) and hit Chase upside his head for causing more problems with his secrets(ugh).
The relationship that the three brothers had and that Layla had with James and Kade was awesome and I loved reading all of their interactions, Nikki was a great friend who loved Layla and wanted her happiness more than anything. Chantal and Dawn do a great job setting up book two, and I am very excited to read not only book two but any other books in this series. I seem to be finding more and more authors who aren't jumping on the never ending series (with the same main characters) band wagon and that makes me happy to no end. This is yet another reason why I love my kindle, I'm a gadget junkie but my kindle is my baby I never leave him at home he goes where I go, and it's because I never would have found fantastic authors like Chantal Fernando and Dawn Martens, they are what is right with self publishing. -
***ARC/BETA received by authors in exchange for an honest review***
Let me tell you something, you are going to LOVE this book!! I devoured it in one sitting. Chantal sent it to me tonight and I just had a 'peak' before bed..... It's now 12:25 am and I've finished!
I fell in love with Chase. Sexy as sin, Funny , Charming, Alfa male, Protective, Dimple, Dark hair, Blue eyes, seriously what more can a woman ask for???
I REALLY want to live in a house with 3 brothers that look and love like Chase,James and Kade!!! Omgosh swoon much?!?
They remind me of a cross between the 'Anderson brothers' from ' Saving Grace ' by J. M. Hill, and the 'Bradfords boys' from ' 'A Neighbour From Hell' series by R. L. Mathewson.
Without giving to much away, I was a little annoyed at the way Layla reacted when she came home early to find the boys having a party. He didn't know about the girl, he was outside!!! I wish she just got her shit together sooner!! It seamed to drag a bit. I did however LOVE the strip club scene!!
Chases little chapters was GREAT. I always love love love to read the other side of a big scene of a book!!
I looked up' Wait for you' Elliot Yamin after chase sung it to Layla at karaoke and cried even harder then I did while reading that particular part!
When Aubrey drop the bomb , god my heart
went out to chase! What a spiteful little cow!! I was wondering if it was daddy or granddaddy at the time. (It was later reviled)
I laughed. I cried. I got mad. I giggled like a school girl. I fell in love with these characters so easily! The story just flowed effortlessly and before I knew it , it was over. Now I'm very Anxious for more!
"The bathroom door opens and he steps out, black hair wet and disheveled , water droplets dripping down his towel clad body. I'm pretty sure my mouth is hanging open. "
"We met here." He says simply.
"We did. " I agree.
"And now I'm the owner. " he says proudly.
"What?" I bust out.
Hellooo sexy Alfa male ;) I loved this ^^^!
" I know it's not a twix, but I have a snickers bar in my handbag, if you're interested. "
He perks up "Really?"
I don't know what it is about a man and food, but it's HOT! Not to mention makes me giggle ;)
All in all I really enjoyed this and I'm certain if Chantal or Dawn don't offer for me to BETA for James and Kade , I may have to get down on my hands and knees and grovel!
Thank you ladies, this is now in my favourite list :) -
Gotta say that the title/cover and blurb caught my attention and bought the book right away!
Layla is one lucky girl! She lives with three hot sexy guys and treats her like a princess. She started off as a great heroine... sweet, strong and feisty but then all of the sudden she became annoyingly insecure. Now I'm all into these kind of heroines.. but Layla makes some unnecessary drama, overreacts, whines and goes hot and cold towards Chase that just pissed me off!
Okay.. on to our Hero Chase.. whew! Where do I start with this guy? He's hot, sexy, dominant alpha possessive! He doesn't do commitment and just use women for sex but once he met Layla.. well.. you already know what happened! I just loved that he's willing to change and show her he's worth it. He also has some wtf moments but heck! it's just hard not to love this guy!
I love that they are both vulnerable and it was interesting and frustrating to read how they dealt with the issues! lol!
Overall, I enjoyed this book very much. The characters are loveable, the banter between everyone was funny and to be honest I devoured this book mainly because of Chase, Kade, James and Ryder!
Funny thing is- I was craving for some possessive hero story and it must be my lucky day to find not one but four hot panty protective, alpha possessive males in one book!
Congratulations to Ms. Chantal Fernando and Ms. Dawn Martens! This is a perfect start for a new series.
I cannot wait for Kade's story and to hear more about he's massive ding dong! ^_^ -
Thank you SJ for recommending this book to me. This was a fantastic read. The story was intriguing and sweet. I found myself in Layla in many ways. We are both Sri Lankan, and we both love reading. She was feisty yet sweet. I love the way she was describes. I especially love how she defends herself. She is not someone to mess with. Also, there is Chase. He is gorgeous and perfect. If I can get a man like him, I would not mind. A plus is the fact that he cooks for Layla. There were times when I felt like strangling him, but I still loved him. The brothers, Kage and James add too the hotness factor and I can't wait to read their books. Also, this book had a whole lot of drama. It was interesting to see how changed Chase is because of Layla. I really liked how he made up for his faults. Another plus is the man can sing. Ahh...fangirling a lot for Chase. Hehe...anyways I loved every minute of it. Overall, an amazing read.
Good read!
We have Chase
Layla
Not so impressed with her
I liked all the jealousy and angst
The ex
But the chemistry between Chase and Lyla
