Engaged with questions of realist and modernist world-views in art, the relations of literary history to politics, and the role of cultural intellectuals in public life, this book of essays collects some of Lukács most influential writings. Translated into english for the time, these pieces offer a new look at one of the most significant Marxist thinkers of the twentieth-century.

It was a little dry at times, but a good introduction to Hungarian Literature and Art that I did not have before. I enjoyed the political critiques of different systems and the emphasis made on a truly democratic structure where people can decide their fate.
I liked the connections enumerated between existential philosophy and fascism that partly explains Heidegger's embrace of Nazism. I think Sartre later defends against these points but this was the first real criticism I saw of Kierkegaard and I found it enlightening if not entirely convincing either.
