This is a review I wrote for Author Ricky Cooper
This review is from: Designated Infected: Designated Book 1 (Kindle Edition)
This story had a number of fine qualities that i'll touch upon. First a plot that ebbed and flowed comfortably with a nice blend of distinct beginning and ending for each chapter. The character depth was another strong aspect of this authors writing talent. When I say character depth I want to explain that a part of the depth is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that was portrayed through how the characters developed as the story became deeper and more interesting. Soldiers who are in constant combat readiness or hardly have any downtime between firefights can become affected in many ways which was portrayed well in this story. The interaction between different governments and agencies was also well written showing the many obstacles that can destroy or hinder a special operation team. I also enjoyed how a critical part of the story evolved( I cant say because its a spoiler). These are zombies of a sort they are slow and fast and were written being blended well. No story is perfect and after talking with the author about some editing concerns I had led me too decide the depth and content of the story and the character building out weighed the small editing concerns I had. This is a well written zombie/ infection/ action story about trying to contain a constant flare up of infections over numerous theatres of the world -
This book was so outside my comfortzone, but I must admit it is incredibly well written. The special operations team that deals with the 'Designated Infected' is a close nit group of men. Who at times they are hilarious in the face of what they deal with, taking out these infected while trying to remain uninfected themselves. The details in which this is written, clearly give you a visual of what this operations team goes through and deals with in very vivid detail. The book moves nicely and your swept along trying to figure out what, for lack of better analogy, boot will fall next. I know it took me forever, it feels like it did anyway, to finish this book. But I just needed to take breaks because I just normally don't read this type of thriller/end of days/zombie-ish/graphic/but hilarious at times book. I guess if you can't beat 'em, laugh with 'em, or at them....LMAO!!
Not sure if I will read book two...fortunately my stomach and brain have a little time before the next release.
I have read his romance book that was co-written with Tania Cooper (no relation, but BFF) and that was a joy to read and also a welcome distraction ;) <3 I do enjoy his writing style and look forward to more books and even other genre's from Mr. Cooper. -
A Zinger of a Zombie Apocalypse at it's finest!
The author did a superb job of extending my reading genre. The vivid images his writing style brought to my mind had me cowering in fright in the dark of night. I clearly heard every haunting moan, scream and groan these 'creatures' emitted throughout the story. The gore was extreme, the blood, guts, grime and military scenes were sick, gross and absolutely intense. This story had me locking my doors, securing my windows, shutting my closet door tight and looking under the bed before closing my eyes. I loved every jaw dropping word he wrote.
Baker is definitely my new BBF, this heroic soldier is completely honorable, fearless, and unstoppable. I love how he shows his feelings in the battle to contain this atrocious infected strain and with every loss he endures of his fallen comrades. I enjoyed reading about Baker's team and each of their characters and attributes.
I'm eagerly awaiting the return of my 'Cherry' and all his charms!
Thank you Ricky Cooper for expanding my horizon's and bringing me into the uncharted territory of new reading genres. -
This is book one of the Designated series by first time author Ricky Cooper, and I must admit he's made a very good job of it for a first release.
A devastating plague is raging across the planet turning it's victims into flesh craving monsters. In England an elite team code name Broadhead, lead by Derek Baker, travel the globe in an attempt to find a cure and deal with outbreaks of the infected within the British isles.
The action is fast, bloody and very graphic in it's description especially early on in the book. And speaking of which I did find the early part of the book slightly confusing with the jumping around between different missions and different years, but once it settled down it was a very enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the series and characters are going to grow and progress. -
Grab this awesome piece of literature and you will find yourself glued to your device for at least 2 hours of delightful reading, and your hopefully still functional brain bussy with questions for a few more days. Because, is it not this what separates us from the Zombies, the power to ask a question, to wonder, to love, to enjoy a great song and last, but not least, like in Pandoras box there will be always be some pure hope, cuddled somewhere in the deps of your conscious being

For someone into war and games this would probably be rated a 5. I was looking for more of a medical story and less of the actual slaughter that took place in the majority of the book. In my estimation less than 27% of the book dealt with plot and actual story, but I'm sure that there is an audience for this genre.
