When seven little bandits suddenly have to share their dad’s time with a Princess and her six little princes and princesses—it’s a royal mess. “When are they leaving?” “Oh, they’re staying, my dear,” said their dad. And stay they did. But when the little bandits devise a plan to make them leave, they soon discover that it’s royally boring without them…   It’s patchwork times three in Ute Krause’s new delightful offering—for when their mom meets a dragon…the bandits and the royals alike are never the same again (and they couldn’t be happier for it!)

• Ute Krause, author of  Oscar and the Very Hungry Dragon  and  Nick and the Nasty Knight   returns with this loving tale of a patchwork family. •  Oscar and the Very Hungry Dragon  was chosen as a Scholastic Book Fair title, and a Florida Reading Association title. • Krause has won praise for both her lively artwork and her humorous stories.

No Ordinary Family! Reviews

Very cute book about divorce and blended families.

A fantasy fictional story about children coping with divorce. A family of bandits start off happy until their parents decide to get a divorce. Their father eventually meets a princess, along with her princess and prince children, and the father and the princess get married. The bandit children are not happy about this and try to scare the princesses and the prince away. The children realize after scaring them away that their father really loved them as much as he loved them, so they go and get them back. When they go to visit their mom, they find out she has meet someone too, only it's not a someone, but a dragon and his dragon kids are added to the family. Readers will see this unique alternative to talking about divorce in families and to see the positive outlook it can bring families. I would use this book to help a child cope with what happens during a divorce.

A story that reads like a fairytale and deals with the difficult subject of divorce. Reader watch as the relationship falls apart, parents, split, children adjust to spending time in two different households, and then adjust again to the blended family that each of their parents creates.

A great book for sharing with children who are going through this type of rough patch, especially because the ending is a positive one and the story is told from the kids' perspectives. PreK-2.

  • Jen

quirky book about divorce and remarriage.

  • Jie

About kids in a divorced family, told using fairy tale symbols (princesses, dragons, etc).

I nice, fun little book about divorced parents and step-families.

  • Pamela

Story about a blended family using witches.

  • Miri Gifford

Not what I was expecting when I picked it up. Very weird, in a sort of cute way. A story about blended families (blended in more than one way).

This was a fun and numerous book about the benefits and struggles of living with a divided family. How all families are unique in their own ways and even though it may not always be the way you want it, you can all come together and have a great time. Both children and parents! I thought this was a great and humorous representation of those who are in divorced families and have step siblings and parents. I really enjoyed this story.
