Hoooooly shit! What the hell just happened?!

This vol. is where season 1 of anime ended, so I didn't expect to be surprised, because I've seen first season, but boy was I wrong! This contained one chapter after the anime ended, and it was just so fucking mind-blowing. I don't know why didn't they make another episode with this last chapter (but I guess that I'm grateful that they didn't, because what a cliffhanger would that be!).

This volume is definitely my favorite so far. Mikasa continues on being the badass character ever (imo, the scene when she was fighting the female titan was best scene in the whole series so far), while Erin continues on being annoying as hell (Am I the only one who finds him annoying? I really hope I'm not).

This is easily becoming one of my favorite comics, if not my favorite. Can't wait to see where will the story go from here.

Despite my favorite character being dead, I think this is my favorite volume in this series so far. This volume finally caught up to where I stopped watching the anime so it's starting to become all new territory for me. There were lots of twists and turns right at the end that I wasn't expecting, so I can't wait to read the next volumes to get some answers. I only own two more volumes of this series though so my bank account is about to be mad at me for buying more volumes...

    Spoilers

I'm finally caught up with the current episodes of the Anime with the end of this volume.

I don't think it's just me, but I think the art has improved a vast amount since this series started.

I liked the subterfuge and the big reveal about the female titan. The story is moving along at a very nice clip, and like all good manga, it's impossible to put down for long. :)

  • Rodrigo

Really good, full of twist and turns and moments that made you go WHAT!
I think that when “good people” like you take control, then that’s when it’s all over.

How is there corruption in a civilization constantly teetering at the brink of annihilation, I mean the real struggle of the fittest to survive would instil some kind of discipline in the military police I would think.

I do think we’re worthless and we’re definitely evil - well do not put that in your year end evaluation form Annie

Wow this world view of Armin is so dark: A “good person”…? I… don’t really like that phrase. I mean… That’s just what you call someone who acts in a way that’s beneficial to you.

Armin is more observant and tactical than I imagined.
Love Levi his reaction: In other words we don’t have any proof, but we’re going to do it anyway

How are you two able to fight?
No Eren, how are you not able to is the real question

Humanity is just toyed with it feels in this part, it opens up so many additional questions.

I’ll ask him the same thing: what’s more important, staying silent? Or staying alive?

  • Shannon

So we find out who the female titan is in this volume. Thank you for not dragging out that reveal over multiple books.

Also, we learn that Soylent Green is people!

Just what is going on here?

So many questions after this volume.

"i don't think anyone can act in a way that benefits everyone. even if you are being helpful to one person, you might still be a 'bad person' to someone else..."

(isayama set the exact standpoint of his whole universe right there. if you know you know.)

    📵ep 80 spoiler alert!!!📵
armin: they have just been standing there for at least a century, so... it might be about time they decide to go for a walk... all at once.
jean: hahaha! was that a joke right there, armin? man, you're lame! that was great!
me: alexa honey play THE RUMBELING =)
this level of foreshadowing is truly beyond me! i swear isayama never fails to amaze me :)🙇🏻‍♀️

    Story
For any fans of the anime that just had to know what happens next, this is where to start if you don't want to read the whole thing. Most of this book covers the end of the anime but the last episode and a half were all new to me.

Overall reading this has left me with even more questions than I had from the anime however, so I can't get my hands on the next few volumes fast enough.

    Artwork
I'm going to be redundant and say while it's improving with each volume it still doesn't hold up as well as anime.

  • Tina Haigler

Ok, so lots of action in this one. Quite a few plot twists too, especially at the end. There was so much satisfaction for me, but also some unresolved issues that will hopefully be taken care of in the next few volumes. Things are getting crazy and we are delving deeper into this world and how it works. I honestly have no idea how far this is gonna go, but I can't wait to find out. On to Volume 9 :)

Hange and Mikasa are still my favs. It just keeps getting better and better.

“I do think we're worthless, and we're definetely evil. You certainly can't call us upright but doesn't that just make us regular people?”

I'm so addicted to this, even though, I already know what happens, because of the anime. So action packed and so many unsolved mysteries. RIP my TBR pile.

  • Diba Tano

  • Sarah

Nope. Nope. Nope. Can't deal. Nope. Did this volume just happen? Is Isayama trying to give me a heart attack with this stuff? Is Mikasa single and ready to mingle cos I'm down for that.

Did I just read about Did I just read that

I love this series but I don't think my heart can take any more dramatic plot twists like those, y'all. But I really, really love Mikasa and Armin right now. I'm sorry for calling you a dingus, Armin, you are good people.

  • Juho Pohjalainen

The manga has some pacing issues, I think. It moves a little too fast - new shocking scenes and big reveals in near-every chapter - leaving little time for the characters to breathe and be themselves, and for us to get to know them better. A lot of the revelations fall flat because we don't really know the people involved all that well: there's very little of the treachery I feel, because I'm not betrayed myself. Then we get flashbacks and other character developing moments after the fact, but the moment is already gone.

So far, the story's hovering around the 3.5-star mark. If the pacing were better, it could easily go up to 4 or higher.

English review: I think I have to start with the fact that I've given five stars to the last four volumes, from this point on the story is already extraordinary, the world-building and character construction have been excellently completed, I'm not saying the characters remain static and that we already know everything about the world of Attack on Titan, far from it, in fact the mystery only deepens, but now we know everyone's motivations and understand how the political class works and how society is structured, in short Hajime Isayama has found his rhythm, the pacing is excellent, the story is alert, full of suspense and keeps you breathless.
Because I have advanced enough in the story, starting with this review, I will talk openly about Eren's special power and other aspects revealed in the first four volumes, I'm not going to beat around the bush, Eren can turn into a titan, for now he can't fully control his powers, although he begins to understand how they work, being helped by a new character, Hange. At first Hange doesn't seem to fit in with the dark world of Attack on Titan, she feels like a comic relief character and she feels like an exaggerated and ridiculous character, after a few volumes you realize that she's actually a brilliant character, who just thinks differently from the others (considering that I am up to date with the anime I can say that she is in the top 10 best characters in the whole series). Going back to the subject, Eren can turn into a titan, this is the moment when some characters realize and the readers should have realized (I haven't because, apparently, if you watch an entire anime in less than a week you can't analyze the clues left by the author) that The Armored Titan and The Colossal Titan are also people who can turn into titans, this revelation has huge implications, but more about that after the next narrative arc . Returning to this narrative arc, an intelligent titan like Eren is introduced, The Female Titan and we find out that this titan is a character that we already know, so the enemies are already infiltrated in the army, hence the story will become more and more brilliant with each volume.
Reading this volume, I realized that this narrative arc contains the only moment in the whole series (so far) in which Levi and Mikasa fight together, directly, with a common enemy, it is an epic moment, which for me surpasses the fight between Eren and The Female Titan.
With this volume, I've finished the chapters which were adapted in the first season of the anime and I can say that I think the anime is better for several reasons: the animation is better than Isayama's drawings, the soundtrack in the anime is incredible, and the voice-acting is truly extraordinary. However, the story is so good that I experience it for the second time with as much enthusiasm as I did when I didn't know what was going to happen.

Slowing down a bit with this now.

The action sequences do get really confusing, and the story jumps around a bit so I do find it a bit hard to follow. The big reveal of this volume came out of nowhere for me so it was a fun surprise, but at the same time I felt like I was really missing the tension that should have led up to it.

The story is still intriguing and hosts plenty of questions to keep you interested, but I'm starting to get a little frustrated by it all.

Will continue the series, but might take a break for a while I think.

  • Sara Salehi

Isayama excels at drawing titan vs. titan fight scenes. It just gets better with each volume!

  • Gayathiri Rajendran

Wow, what a read that was! There are a lot of plot twists in this one and big reveals at the end. They are totally insane and the action is heavy. There are also some unresolved issues in this volume which I hope will be answered in the future volumes. Some reveals were really shocking and we get a more in depth understanding of the world this story takes place in. I cannot wait to read the next volume now. All of my money is going to be thrown at the entire series now and I don't regret it one bit.

Why authors end volumes with cliffhangers? Ugh..
I have been spoiled about female titan, but it was a good revelation nonetheless.
I knew something was wrong with the walls! It was bothering me from the beginning. Now I wonder if the government was trying to control people using titans and also I wonder about what the world outside the walls look like.
But most importantly, what is in the goddamn basement?!

  • Paula

There were two slight changes between the anime and the manga, unforgettable, really. This is the pint where I felt the story was going out of control. There are too many mysteries, that keep piling up and not enough answers.
