She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad.
The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothy sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust.
Chicago, here we come...
Turns out, Chicago has some pretty hot cops. Hot, intense, naughty-lookin’ cops like Derek Tyler, who looks like he could eat a girl up and leave her begging for more. And more. Tempting as he is, getting involved with the sexy homicide lieutenant next door poses a teensy problem for a gal who’s on the lam. But one thing is certain—Derek’s onto her, and he wants more than just a taste.
And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law.
Protecting What's His (Line of Duty, #1) Reviews

this book is really reflective of the state of romance between 2012 and 2015 and i’m not into it. extremely alpha, semi dom, not respectful of autonomy dudes idk. gives me the ick. and like don’t get me wrong i like alphas from time to time. but this book was 50 shades but a cop not a millionaire.
the only good thing i got from this was the realization that authors really can get much better the more they write. -
5 Yummy Cop stars
*Spoilers*
“I’ve got an hour before I need to be back at the station. I’ll have fucked you three different ways by then.”
OMFG!!!! This book was Awesome!! Let me let you in on a little secret about me. I have a serious fetish for men in uniforms, Cops, Firefighters, Military men, Correctional Officers you name it . So to say this book was right up my alley is a understatement. My God this book had it all. It was a yummy trifecta.... Sexy cop, Dirty talk, and possessive alpha male attitude. I was in book heaven.
“The longer it takes me to get between your thighs, the rougher I’m going to be when I finally get there. Understand?”
What this book is about:
Ginger Peet has a worthless mother, and has been raising her little sister Willa since she was about 10. Their mother is a drug addict that sells herself and runs with some really bad people , she disappears for huge periods of time and then just shows up with bad men following . So when Ginger finds her mom passed out on the sofa with a tons of cash in her purse. Ginger sees that money as an chance to make a better life for her and her now 17 year old sister. So she steals the money, grabs Willa, and runs. She and Willa end up in Chicago , moving into an apt right next to this super sexy homicide lieutenant, Derek Tyler. He tempts her like no other, but she doesn't want a relationship, and he wants it all. Can Derek get his girl, and protect her from her past!
“Because if I see your naked breasts, I’m going to want to suck your pretty little nipples. And if I suck your nipples, I’m going to need to bury my cock inside you.”
Derek:
Damn Derek was Hott. Holy crap he was perfect. Everything you want a yummy cop to be, bossy, strong, protective, but he had a sweet side too. He is a good man, wants to do what is right, cares for his men, and takes his job serious . MY GOD He was a Sexy, Spanking, dirty talking beast! The things that came out of his mouth * Fans Self* I want me some Derek.
“Let me be clear, Ginger, since you insist on talking in circles. I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want those motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.”
“You like that, beautiful girl?” When she whimpered, he leaned over and spoke directly into her ear. “Good. That was for the hard-on I’ll be walking around with tonight. And you’ll goddamn wear the imprint of my hand on your ass for it.”
“Yes. So you know what your punishment is going to be, sweetheart? I’m going to make love to you. Slowly. Hell, it might take me until tomorrow. I’m going to lose count of how many times you come. And every time you do, I’m going to tell you that I love you. Until you fucking get used to it.”
Ginger
Ginger was awesome. She is very loyal, raising her sister, and trying to make a better life for them. She is strong, has a sassy mouth, and she knows how to use her sex appeal to her advantage. She is quite the little dirty talker herself. She has had a hard life and shes had to grow up fast . She could only count on herself so she is afraid to let anyone close and end up being hurt. She had a very sweet vulnerability to her, while putting on a brave face. I loved her as a character , she was very real!
“I’m twenty-three years old, actually. And last time I checked, that’s old enough to vote, drink, gamble, rent an apartment, own a firearm, and explain to a grown man, police lieutenant or not, when he’s being a gigantic dickhead. And Derek, if it wasn’t clear enough already, you are the dickhead in this little scenario.”
“All right, Derek. You proved tonight you had the biggest dick in the room. You’ve clubbed me over the head and brought me back to your cave. Where do you want me? We don’t even have to be quiet this time.” She hopped up on the kitchen table and lifted her shirt. “How about right here on the table? Or maybe the couch?”
“Do you want to put it in my mouth, Derek?” she whispered against his ear. “Jesus Christ.” “You’ll be my first. Don’t you want to be my first again?”
Derek and Gingers' chemistry was off the charts, melting my kindle hot! They were very cute and playful together . Willa was a great character. Ginger and Willa together was some of the funniest parts in the book. This was a great read. This book had a great plot, greater characters, two sweet romances, and tons of kinky, steamy sex. I am so glad I started this series. This is the first book I have read by Tessa Bailey , and I think she is a kick ass writer. Instant Fan girl! I am on to the next book, and leave you with my favorite part in this book:
“Do you feel that, baby? That’s your man moving inside you.” Bracing herself on her elbows, she ground back against him, circling her hips and begging him to keep moving, but he seemed determined to set the pace. “Please, Derek.” He thrust hard and quick exactly five times, just enough for Ginger to get used to the rhythm before slowing once more. “Who’s fucking you, Ginger?” She knew what he wanted to hear. Throwing her head back, she reveled in every word. “My man. My man is fucking me.”

WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS AN UBER-ALPHA, POSSESSIVE, SEXY-HOT, TATTOOED POLICE OFFICER. WHO WOULD PEE ON His WOMAN IF HE COULD GET AWAY WITH IT TO MARK HER AS HIS!
THIS. BOOK. WAS. SMOKIN' HOT!!
Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down until I finished!
The story of a 23-year-old Ginger who has been raising her 17-year-old sister for a very long time because her mother is a prostitute and drug addict, and has literally abandoned them. When her mother comes home one night and passes out with a large amount of money falling out of her purse, Ginger sees an opportunity to escape and give her little sister a better life with a fresh start somewhere new. She takes the money, packs her sister up and they leave Nashville and head north to Chicago.
This is when she meets Derek, her neighbour across the hall, and also a Homicide Police Lieutenant.
The first time they meet is a disaster. Derek has to go to one of the officers under his command's funeral, and he's hung over. Ginger is moving (rather loudly) into the building, and this puts Derek over the edge and he yells at them, then proceeds to be a jerk to Ginger.
Regardless of not seeing each other for a couple of days, neither one of them can't stop thinking of the other.
Derek does a background check on Ginger and finds out a little of her history, and he also runs her mother's name and finds out who Ginger grew up with.
Their next encounter is totally different. They find themselves both on their apartment buildings rooftop patio. Ginger apologizes for the comments she made to Derek, and he also apologizes and tells her about having to go to a funeral that day. She tells him she just got a job as a bartender, and they proceed to flirt with one another.
Derek doesn't mess around and says,
Her eyes widen, and just when she's about to say something, Derek then says, "I just wanted to be up-front. Goodnight, Ginger."
That was only the beginning of them circling one another until finally, they can't take it any longer. Derek asks Ginger to be his date at a city function, by the time dinner is over they've both reached their sexual tension limit. Derek declares,"we're leaving now...
This is the impression you have of how Derek looks at Ginger:
.. and this is what the reader is doing
As their relationship grows, Ginger doesn't want anything other than a physical relationship with Derek, because she's terrified that if she starts to care for him, he'll break her.
Derek is falling and falling hard. Right from the start, he felt totally possessive of Ginger, and everything in him was screaming
The rest of the story is intense and hot!
If the warning above doesn't deter you from reading this story, then I think you'll enjoy this story.
Once again, thank you so much, Dorsey, for the recommendation of this AWESOME story! -
4 stars!
This was my first Tessa Bailey book. it was a short, steamy and entertaining read. I listened to it on audio and let me tell you, having Lieutenant Derek Tyler talk dirty to you is not a bad way to spend your time in the car or doing laundry ;)
This was a quick one to listen too. It kept me engrossed the entire time. I loved both main characters. Ginger and her saucy attitude, how she could be so feisty, but also had a sweet and caring side that came out around her little sister. And Derek. I love me an alpha man with a dirty mouth. The two of them together were smokin hot!
“Let me be clear, Ginger, since you insist on talking in circles. I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want those motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.”
“I warned you that I’m having a difficult time being a gentleman. Should I assume you’re provoking me on purpose?”
“Baby, I don't need an excuse to cuff you. I just need the opportunity.”
I look forward to reading more of Bailey’s work when I’m in the mood for something light and sexy! -
*****FOUR STARS*****
At first I wasn't sure I was going to like this story.
I felt as though there was no build up to the relationship between Ginger and Derek. He just instantly seemed to become overtly sexual and DOMINANT with Ginger after having only just met her. Ginger and her little sister move into Derek's apartment building and as soon as they cross paths, there is an instant attraction. Oh and did I mention, Derek is a sexy as hell police detective???!!!!
So here I was about 40% into the book and I was thinking this was going to be another disappointing read for me this week but then, BAM, we get to the S-E-X!!! HO-LEE-SHIT!!!! Derek, I think I love you!!! WOW!! The sex won me over! Oh so good!
There is a love story thrown into the mix as well! It's not all about the sex. Although, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of the sexy times with this hot as hell man!!
If you're looking for a steamy read, with a tiny bit of angst, then this is definitely worth picking up! This is the second Brazen novella I've read and I definitely enjoyed this one so much more! It's also my first book by Tessa Bailey and surely won't be my last!! -
This review will pretty much be "meh" because that's what I felt about this book.
For some reason, the thing that usually works for me didn't work this time, and I'm really sorry cause I was looking for an outrageous guy with outrageous statements that would blow my mind.
Maybe it's because I've already SEEN all the outrageous lines from this book in status updates when the book was all the rage??
I don't know. But for me, they only left me rolling my eyes and at some points laughing at the stuff they said, not because it was funny but because for me, I found it ridiculous :DDD
Anyway, maybe it's because the hype is over and I've already seen the best parts of the book, maybe the writing style doesn't work for me, but at about 30% I lost the will to continue and at about 40% I decided to DNF.
Oh well, lots of other books out there! -
Protecting What’s His is book one in the Line of Duty series by Tessa Bailey. I am ashamed to say that this is my first Tessa Bailey book! I have a BUNCH of her books on my TBR list but never have gotten to them. I won this paperback a couple of years back and I am in love!!!
Ginger Peet is twenty three years old. We meet her when she is living in Nashville. Her mother is pretty much a waste of space, only interested in alcohol and drugs. But Ginger has a seventeen year old sister that depends on her for survival. So Ginger has stayed in the house to make sure she’s okay. That is, until she finds a very large sum of money and decides that this is their chance, a chance to get her sister away from her mother and give them both a fresh start. Chicago, here they come!
Derek Tyler is a Lieutenant for the Chicago Homicide Division. He is thirty years old. His work is pretty much all he has time for, definitely no time for relationships. But then he met the snarky new neighbors as they were moving in, and he was instantly interested.
Ginger has one goal, to give her sister Willa a better senior year of high school but their grumpy neighbor is always in their business. He even shows up at the bar where she is bartending. She learned from watching her mother that love isn’t real, that you can never trust a man. But he is wearing her down with all his sexy talk and attention. Maybe she can just be his friend with benefits?
I loved this book so much. Derek was hilarious with all his neanderthal moves. She wasn’t even his but he was so jealous if anyone even looked Ginger’s way! And Ginger was no easy conquest. She fought him the whole way but I think it was their fighting that turned them on most of all. This was so sexy and also so many sweet moments. It’s a pretty quick read and I enjoyed every minute of it. There is a little novella that is a continuation of their story, Protecting What’s Theirs, which I plan to read next!

4 Awesomely Dirty-minded and Filthy mouth Stars
“Listen to me, baby. From the time we walk in the door to my apartment, you will have less than a minute before I put my cock inside you. No foreplay. No kissing. There won’t be any time, because you’ve got me strung so damn tight I can barely think straight. I need you to keep yourself wet for me on the ride home. Starting now.”
Holy hotness.... Derek Tyler.
The 30-year old Lieutenant, is living his life unaware, doing his job.
A man who wore a police uniform by day, but liked to talk dirty at night.
All these change unexpectedly, when his world is crashed by the hurricane Ginger.
The leggy brunette, moves in the next door apartment awaking the beast inside. Possessive, arrogant, demanding, protective, Derek emerges an irresistible caveman that is irrevocably in love. Throughout the book you can hear his mind screaming....

And of course all this behavior and delicious mouth is coupled with the sexiest moves.
“No, no. The shirt stays on.” “Why?” “Because if I see your naked breasts, I’m going to want to suck your pretty little nipples. And if I suck your nipples, I’m going to need to bury my cock inside you.”
But Ginger Peet is no doormat and not easily intimidated by the hunky detective. Not even when he takes his shirt off.

This sexy story, will push all you girly buttons. You will fall in love and laugh out loud. The feel good kind of HAWT stories, you really don't wanna miss it.
And a last reminder of Derek: -
3/5 stars.
Ginger runs away from her home with her sister and fifty thousand dollars. She moves to Chicago and tries to start a new life, which is clean from her and her sister's past. The problem is that her neighbor is a police officer. Nice book, nothing more. -

My Derek
Good god was Derek hot!!! His dirty mouth, his bossy ways and the fact that he carries a gun and badge... oooh ye!!!
I can not picture Ginger... but the both of them together is below... hot, raw and totally kinky.I'm going to make love to you. Slowly. Hell, it might take me until tomorrow. I'm going to lose count of how many times you come. And every time you do, I'm going to tell you that I love you. Until you fucking get used to it.

Ginger has been taking care of her little sister, Willa since she was a child. Living in a broken down home and having the most neglectful and whore of a mother. One night she walks into her house and sees her mother passed out with a bag full of money. With some hesitation she takes that money, Will and a truck and escapes. Escapes to provide a better life for her and her sister.
Ginger settles both of them in Chicago... next to a hottie Lieutenant right across the hallway. They do not make a best first impression, but it is a fiery one. Heated words and stares and Lieutenant is snared into Ginger's behind and her sexy southern accent.
They are both attracted to each other to a crazy degree. They go from shake a hand to dry humping each other within an inch of an orgasm. Derek may be a good cop but he is definitely a dirty and naughty boy with a streak for BDSM with Ginger... and she loves it."Who's fucking you, Ginger?"
She knew what he wanted to hear. Throwing her head back, she reveled in every word. "My man. My man is fucking me."
Now Ginger doesn't bend easy and she is no weakling. She may turn to jello around him but she makes him work for it... and he does... including having to save her tushie.
I loved the humor in this book and the very dirty mouthed and quick witted Willa/WIP..."Are you guys trying to eye fuck each other to death? If so can I please be excused?"
"Mommy and Daddy!" Willa called from the hallway. "Zip up your pants and open the door."
...the awesome mention of Dolly (they have a frigging statue of her that they lug around everywhere)... and I'm excited to see whether the series continues with Ginger/Derek story OR some new blood (pun intended).
ººº My Favorite Quote Remains:ººº"Ginger, lift! You're going to knock off one of her boobs if it hits the table!"
Grunting over the strain in her muscles, she lifted Dolly up and over the dining table. "For once I wish Dolly had smaller tits," she panted.

5 CUFF ME NOW STARS.
I've had this book on my 'to be read' shelf for so long it had started to collect dust, so with my recent Brazen book binge still keeping me entertained I knew this book needed to hit my next up list. 'Protecting what's his' delivers exactly what it's title suggests and once again I find myself smiling at my book choice. This range of books never fails to deliver for my particular reading taste and if I'm becoming predictable with my five star ratings then so be it, I love sweet and sexy and this book hit the nail right on the head, and here are my line of duty thoughts ...
What's it all about?
Ginger Peet has survived a life of neglect and heartache at the hand of her less than unsavoury mother. All her life Ginger has taken the role as protector and provider for her sister, Willa Peet. An opportunity arises for the sisters to start over when Ginger comes across a substantial amount of cash so without looking back they move to Chicago with each other and the happiness of new beginnings. Lieutenant Derek Taylor is a man who lives by his strict control of everything in his life, in and out of the bedroom this tough homicide cop always gets what he wants. When Derek and Ginger's lives collide we get to see what happens when control gets thrown out of the window. But will these two make it past the lust filled fog together when insecurity and doubt cloud the feeling's that start to develop. Derek and Ginger must learn to trust and get past secrets and danger that loom over them both in order to find their perfect ending.
What did I love?
'Protecting what's his' is four plus hours of sensual, sexy and sweet combined in one gorgeous story. It hits all my romance buttons with the added bonus of a hero and heroine that are equally addictive. The plot is well thought of and descriptive and the characters are charming and relatable. There was nothing that didn't speak five stars to me about this story. From the start of the book the chemistry and connection between the characters is heart-in mouth-swoon-worthy standard good, I found myself glued to the pages to see what would happen next between these delightful pages. I also loved the heroines history it was heart breaking without being depressing, it added a little depth to an already engaging romance story. I loved the relationship between the heroine and her sister it was a lovely byline story that went along with the main theme well. I devoured this book completely it was just what I expected and I'm more than excited to read more by this author. This whole story was told with a witty undertone that had me laughing out loud at some of the scenes, and there is certainly no mistaking that the author can write HOT and hot she most certainly delivers, beware readers you will all want your very own law enforcer or at the very least your own pair of handcuffs. *Wink* Derek is a hot to the touch, controlling and domineering hero but as the story develops so does his soft side and I melted every time he opened up to Ginger, I could not get enough of his love for the heroine. And as females leads in a book go, Ginger was adorable, she is feisty and strong and witty and stubbornly attractive, I could not have asked for a better pair and I just hope that in future books by this author she delivers again with her characters.
Final thoughts?
For those that love a romance story with a bit of dirty and a teeny bit of heartache then this will most likely be a hit for you. As with most of the Brazen collection, there won't be anything groundbreakingly original and it has a predictability that won't interest some readers. But for me it has a comfort factor that makes it enjoyable. This story is easy reading at its very finest with a hero with a talent for talking dirty that you wont want to forget. Don't delay it's time to meet Lieutenant Taylor, go grab it readers. Enjoy ... Kisses. -
5 WHY-DID-IT-TAKE-ME-SO-LONG-TO-READ-THIS-AUTHOR STARS!!!!!
What is wrong with me??!! This has got to be one of my favorite authors, and I’ve only read one of her books! I LOVE dialogue. I LOVE dirty talk. I LOVE sassy, strong women. I LOVE sweet alpha males. It’s like someone wrapped up the perfect package (pun intended) and gave it to me for my birthday!
Tessa Bailey can write a freaking book!
Derek – sexy, dirty-talkin’ cop….Need I say more? Ok, I will say more. He is also a sweetie pie. I love me a jerk…and Derek definitely has his jerk moments, especially when he first meets Ginger, but he isn’t a complete jerk.
My Derek:
Ginger (oh btw, I LOVE the name Ginger!) – is running away, from her mother, from her old life. She is doing her best to give her sister and herself a better life away from the pain and hurtful memories they grew up with.
My Ginger:
I love everything about this book. The characters are so well-developed. The story is interesting and realistic. I just wanted to crawl inside this book and hang out with these people. Even the younger sister was awesome.
Do you feel that, baby? That’s your man moving inside you.
The chemistry between Derek and Ginger had me grinning and squealing from the very first moment they met until the very end of the book. Their relationship is fun and playful and hot. I love a couple that can laugh.
I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want these motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.
“I’m not exactly a champagne and soft music type of guy.”
“Then I guess it’s a good thing I like cheap red wine and country music.”
Baby, I’m jealous of men who haven’t even seen you yet.
Tessa Bailey….I will be reading every single word you ever write ever again….multiple times! -
I really enjoyed this story, and while it's not perfect, it's damned close. It's sexy, witty, and romantic in a "don't make me spank your ass" kind of way, and I love me a man with a hand that he's not afraid to use. I'm all about hot, alpha heroes, and Derek is definitely that. Ginger is an all right heroine, but Derek, and Ginger's kid sister, Willa, steal the show.
I'm looking forward to reading more in this series. -
I love finding an amazing book by pure chance. I particularly love when in doing so, I discover an new and amazing author.
What did I love about this book?
I mean my goodness! It had it all: humor, amazing characters, sexual tension so hot I thought my kindle would catch on fire, super steamy scenes, and some of the best dirty talk I've read in a damn long while! So please excuse me a moment while I take a moment to myself
I can't find enough good things to say about Protecting What's His. It has been a very long time since I've read a book and loved absolutely everything about.
Ginger and her sister Willa had me laughing out loud at times with their banter.
"Pick up the end! I can't carry the whole thing, skunk-vag!"
"Fuck off! You're only using one hand!"
"That's because I'm using the other one to flip you off"
"Well, I can't argue with multitasking."
"You would argue with the pope's mom"
....
Did he just hear one of them call the other donkey-queef?'
Ginger was an extremely refreshing heroine to read. She was not the typical shy, virginal wallflower. She was outspoken, stood up for herself, and made Derek work for it.
Now as for Derek...oh Derek, I think I found my #1 book boyfriend. I was fanning myself more than once throughout the whole book. I mean the man is just yummy...and the things that he says- oh my!"Try harder, Derek"
"Point taken. But one more thing." Derek leaned forward, resting his hands on either side of her on the counter, then dipped his head lower. Ginger's mind reeled as he ran his tongue upward in one long lick of her neck. "The longer it takes for me to get between your thighs, the rougher I'm going to be when I finally get there. Understand?"
He is Alpha, demanding, possessive and protective but in a completely endearingly swoon-worthy way."How can you be so jealous of other men, Derek, when you know there's only been you?"
"Baby I'm jealous of men who haven't even seen you yet"
And when Ginger and Derek are together..."Do you feel that, baby? That's your man moving inside you"
The man truly doesn't mince his words"Listen to me, baby. From the time we walk in the door to my apartment, you wi have less than a minute before I put my c*ck inside you. No foreplay. No kissing. There won't be any time, because you've got me strung so damn tight I can barely thing straight. I need you to keep yourself wet for me on the ride home. Starting now."

Really liked this one. Starting off, thought to myself I hate the name Derek but by the end of it I LOVED Derek. Ginger was a great heroine, protective sister, fearful of becoming her mother and afraid to fall in love and rely on anyone. She had been taking care of herself and her sister for a long time and was very independent. But she was knocked for six when she met the Lieutenant. Smokin hot love scenes, some funny moments. Would definitely recommend it. It was fast paced also so very easy to read.
-
SO F'KING HOT!!
Damn.. this book was so good!! Its not very long so I ate it up quick.. but it sure did back a lot of heat into it. Check my updates out.... I can't wait to see what Tessa Bailey puts out next.. she is on my BUY NOW ASK QUESTIONS LATER list for sure.. that woman can write some seriously sexy scenes.. but she was able to really create a believable connection between Ginger and Derek too.. This book just flew by, had no angst, just the right amount of drama, totally hot cop, sexy woman with a quirky younger sister, great sex.. Yep, I LOVED IT !! -
5 STARS
“The longer it takes me to get between your thighs, the rougher I'm going to be when I finally get there. Understand?”
“Who’s fucking you, Ginger?”
She knew what he wanted to hear. Throwing her head back, she reveled in every word. “My man. My man is fucking me.”
“I’ve got an hour before I need to be back at the station. I’ll have fucked you three different ways by then.”
Starting now.” Reaching across the car’s console, he yanked her skirt high on her thighs. “Put your hand between your legs, Ginger.”
“No, no. The shirt stays on.” “Why?” “Because if I see your naked breasts, I’m going to want to suck your pretty little nipples. And if I suck your nipples, I’m going to need to bury my cock inside you.”
Who doesn't love a man in uniform? Yeah...you are lying if you say you don't 🙄🙄
A man who wore a police uniform by day, but liked to talk dirty at night, that's Derek Tyler. HOT HOT HOT that man !
He took the stage in this book , but I liked the h as well. Ginger was strong-willed and perceptive, funny and compassionate.
I won't bother with a summary for this because the 100000000 reviews will do that. I loved it. A sweet and steamy romance with a hot cop! exactly! what's not to like? -
Derek is a Lieutenant for the Chicago Police Department and he is all about being a strong, upstanding man who's in control...or is he? Lucky for us, he has a bad boy side and OMG he loves to talk dirty and he wastes no time getting down to business.
Ginger thinks she can handle herself. Heck, she's been taking care of herself and her sister since she can remember. She's manage not only to survive but thrive in the worse conditions so Mr. Goodie Two Shoes is no problem...or so she thinks!
This book had such promise! It started out sooo strong but it just couldn't finish. Don't get me wrong...it's a good romance and there's lots of steam but it just really fizzled for me once Derek and Ginger got together. But...I did really enjoy all their passion and how they both realized they were more to each other than just sex. It was great watching them both come to terms with not having much experience at having a relationship and trusting each other.
“Baby, I don’t need an excuse to cuff you. I just need the opportunity.”
We get a bit of a confrontation with Derek's ex girlfriend but that quickly leads to nowhere except for some hot times for Derek and Ginger. Who knew that Ginger being jealous would be such a turn on for Derek? Well, that and not wearing any panties! ;)
"I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name."
There's an ongoing issue with some money that Ginger took and what's happening with her and Willa, her sister. She needs to come clean with "the police officer" before things can go to the next level. It's interesting...it does add some drama but it was also kind of "ehh" for me. The drama at the end just seemed to lack credibility and what in the heck happened to the General??
One of my favorite things was Ginger and Willa's relationship...from their sarcastic remarks to them finally opening up and talking to each other. Willa was sooo sweet letting down her guard and trusting Evan and I think they would have a great story!
Overall, I was happy with the book even with the few shortcomings. I enjoyed how things ended and we get a short epilogue that may possibly be setting things up for the next book. (I really loved why Derek let his hair grow out!!)
Favorite quotes:

♥ “God, this is how it’s going to be with you, isn’t it? When I can’t make love to you properly, you’ll beg me for it? I think you’re trying to kill me.”

She's running from the law, and the law wants her bad
I brought this book by mistake and decided "what the hell. The title and cover already make me swoon, why should i return it?"
So, like, 2 months later i finally gave it a go.
BEST.CHOICE.EVER!!!
I only wished i would have read it sooner because i think this is the best erotica/NA i have read so far! ( much to my complete surprise).
Meet Ginger
Giner has stole a lot of money from her mother to run away with her younger sister and start fresh. They end up in a different town far, far away and move into an apartment. Living next door to them is a rather very...intriguing man.
Derek Tyler is a Lieutenant who just had a very bad day. His and Ginger's first impression goes...not the best.
But...
And Derek makes it clear what he wants from day one, Ginger underneath him. Ginger though has no intentions on making it easy for Derek and gives him his walking papers, but Derek is more than determined where Ginger is concerned and doesn’t plan to let anyone else get in his way.“Give me a chance, beautiful girl.”
I think Protecting What's His is what i needed after DNFying 2 books in a row.
It was so amazing!!!!
Not only sexy as hell, but funny too (which is always a humongous plus for me!)
I simply adore funny books, they make me love them more.Willa flipped Ginger the bird without looking away from the full-length mirror. “This touching family sitcom moment brought to you by the letters F and U.”
Not only were the scenes funny but the characters also!
Oh my...to express my love for Ginger is impossible.
I think i might love her even more than Derek does!
We must have a competition for her, hottie! ;)
She was such a sarcastic, caring, and strong character! Always looked after her little sister, she was her first priority and would do anything to make her happy, and give her a better life than the one she had.
Had i already told you Ginger that....(?)
And Derek...
You are a one dirty talker like no other! He was an overprotective and dominant son of a bitch that i loved too! The things he said can set your panties on fire, ladies!“Listen to me, baby. From the time we walk in the door to my apartment, you will have less than a minute before I put my cock inside you. No foreplay. No kissing. There won’t be any time, because you’ve got me strung so damn tight I can barely think straight. I need you to keep yourself wet for me on the ride home. Starting now.”
Overall, Protecting What's His was a fabulous romance that i LOVED!!! The characters were epic and i loved them the most!!! They were complex and strong. The plot was great too!
Tessa Bailey definitely deserves some much earned applause.
Thank you Debra and Kristin for a BR that i completely ruined by reading the book sooner. I should really look at my calendar before reading anything, LOL. Hope you'll enjoy this as much as i did :)

This was my first Tessa Bailey book and it for sure won't be the last. I loved this book. It was all kinds of hot with an interesting plot. Really enjoyed this one and was glad I got to buddy read this one with Jen.
Right off the bat, I liked the book. Ginger is a 23 year old that is trying to better her life for herself and her younger sister Willa. Her upbringing hasn't been the best but now that she has escaped Tennessee, she's gonna do whatever she has to do to make sure her sister has everything she didn't. I Ginger a lot. She had a big heart and didn't see all the good she had in herself. I loved how she took care of her Willa and the banter between them. They had a typical sister relationship, where they didn't always get along but loved each other to death. I liked Ginger's sassy attitude and how she was very comfortable with her sexuality. But, Ginger has a secret, one that Derek can't find out.● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

Derek is a 30 year old Lieutenant who has been living the single life for a long time. He has meaningless sex with women since he doesn't do serious relationship. Then, Ginger shows up at his building and he finds out they will be neighbors. Derek has never felt so caveman-like about a woman, but Ginger brings that out of him. I LOVED Derek. He was possessive, a dirty talker, and oh, so sexy. What I love was that he never tried to deny his feelings for her, no instead he relentlessly chased her which was very fun to read and it made me swoon.● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
"Do you feel that, baby? That's your man moving inside you"

The steam in this book was sizzling, as my buddy reader Jen said. I loved the build up and all that tension. I'm just a sucker for that stuff and this book didn't disappoint me at all. Yes there was quite a bit of HOT sex in the book but there was also a story. The pace in which all of it developed was just right. I loved the connection between Derek and Ginger. I loved how protective he was of her, hence the name of the book. And of course, I loved Willa snarky attitude. She was a great secondary character as was Evan.● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●
"Look at me. You own me. I’m owned."

The ending was great and I really enjoyed the epilogue. This book was a bit on the short side, but it was still very enjoyable. I had some funny moments, of course some steam, a bit of angst, and a bit of suspense. The only thing I felt was missing from the book was knowing Derek's story. I wanted to know what his upbringing was like or why he decided to be a cop. I don't think there was enough info in the book for me to know Derek completely. However, that didn't affect how much I loved the guy. Overall, a really great read and I loved it. I look forward to reading more books from this author. And thanks to Jen for buddy reading this with me.

Protecting What's His
I'll start off by shouting from the roof stop, " I LOOOOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!"
In this book we get a strong, possessive, gruff, alpha male. As soon as we met him I knew-
We also meet the lovely Ginger. Who is strong yet vulnerable. She saw a way out for her and her sister and took it.
Love a strong MC. As soon as we met her I thought, "oh yeah, I like her-
This girl is going to be a riot."
As soon as the two meet - I was equal parts:
Laughing
And equal parts aroused.
When these two finally do the dirty
Lets not forget about the spunky, sarcastic, funny, loyal, loving Willa. She was an awesome secondary character. The way she looked out for her sister made me instantly love her.
So if you want a sexy, funny, read with a HEA look no further than this book! I recommend this book to everyone ! -
Actual Rating 2.5 stars
It's an OK book, it is just too simple. No wow factor, nothing special or worth remembering.
Story-wise it was lacking, there wasn't much there and the romance needed more development.
The conflict resolution felt rush, and was extremely cliche, predictable and bland.
I have to say that I did like that Derek was the domineering kind, I have always liked the type. ;) -
Rating: 1 out of 5.
I had serious issues with this book.
I didn’t like Derek’s attitude. A day or two after meeting his new neighbour, he stakes out the place of her employment the first day, and the second day, he sends his colleagues over to the bar that she works at.
Does anyone else see a problem with that?
It’s not hot or sexy. It’s just not cool.
I have read books where guys cross the line. But the books that I like are those in which the author addresses the issue, they don’t make it sound like he is a fairy tale prince come to save the day. And the heroines in those books at least know it is wrong.
The way he is obsessed with who she has slept with, whether she ever goes home with anyone from the bar (to which: surprise, surprise, the answer is no because of course, she is a virgin, and because of course, Derek deserves a woman who is pure and virginal), and the fact that Ginger lets him ask intrusive questions and butt in her business. She barks a bit in her head, but when it comes to acting on it to let him know that he needs to respect her boundaries, it is then she fails spectacularly. A kiss later, she forgets everything which she wanted to talk about. I have very low tolerance for females who are weak… She won’t take shit from her customers, but when it comes to Derek, everything is excusable.
He tries to manipulate her through guilt into staying at his place when her place gets destroyed. He starts to control her life. He doesn’t like how much skin she shows, and tells her what she can and cannot do while she is out in public. Also not cool. I mean within a day of meeting her, when he asks her where she works, and she says that she will start work at a bar, his hands curl into fists. I was like WHAT? Dude, you talked to this girl for 15 minutes max, counting 10 minutes from the day before when she was moving in and 5 minutes now… And you decide you don’t like the fact that she works in a bar when a day ago, you didn’t even know her from Eve?
It just gets worse from there. The wildness and sexiness that attracted him to her in the first place, is something he hates when she shows to others. Not only that, but after their first time together, he leaves the morning after without saying anything to her. But when he comes back to find her missing, he gets angry at her not leaving him a note. I think there is a picture of him next to the word hypocrite in the dictionary. This is what he thinks: “But what would he have said? Thanks for the hottest fuck of my life, baby. Let’s do it again as soon as I get home from work. Twice.”
Not only that, but when he gets told that she is on a date (which again, she is not, because she is such a good girl, saving herself for the right man), this is what he thinks: “A date? A fucking date? He’d find out where the hell she’d gone and with whom. Then he’d go there and kill the motherfucker.” Yup… I am so very in love with his violent rants.
Some people might be reading this book and thinking wow, so sexy and hot. I am sitting here thinking about real life horror stories of men, whether they are men in blue or not, who are too possessive when it comes to their wives and girlfriends: stories which sometimes ends in abuse if not death.
Rough and kinky bed play that is consensual is fine. But when that controlling obsession seeps into day to day life, then there is a serious problem… -

Lisa Jayne, Jahy, Lkay and many more all brought this to my attention on my updates. A big Thank you, Gals :D
The Blurb:
She’s running from the law, and the law wants her bad. The opportunity was just too damn delicious for Ginger Peet to pass up. The purse full of money she finds—$50,000 to be exact—could give her and her teen sister the new start they need. So she grabs the cash, her gothic sibling, and their life-sized statue of Dolly Parton, and blows outta Nashville in a cloud of dust.
And as far as he’s concerned, possession is nine-tenths of the law
Ok, here is my take on this book.
I am not shy about liking all types of books. Sometimes I want thought-provoking; sometimes something sweet with a perfect HEA and sometimes...
I want a book that is fun, snappy, very hot and sexy.
If it has the man being all into the gal; talking in her ear, telling her all about what he is going to do and how; if he shows her how he wants it...
I'm sorry I got a little carried away... Back to the review...
This book had a verbal sexy banter with hot sex between the main characters.
Each character in this book had backstories which gave them reasons for their behavior. The male lead did have some kind of backstory but we really didn't learn that much which was a disappointment. The female though had plenty of grit, life experience yet a type of innocence, too. The sister was really well thought out and almost stole the story. There is a plot and the story moves swiftly.
All in all, it accomplishes what I think the author set out to do; establish a type of book involving Cops, the women they fall for, and lots and lots of Alpha possessive behavior leading up to Headboard Banging Sex.
Yup, Mission accomplished. The second book in this series is Officer Off Limits. Well, it can't be too off-limits and my little click-click finger is ready to go. :D

“To steal or not to steal, that was the question?” Could you resist the temptation if you were presented an opportunity of a load of money? Your ticket out of shitsville for you and your younger sibling....
Ginger Peet has skipped town with her younger sister Willa in tow. Starting anew in Chicago they meet Lieutenant Derek Tyler who happens to be their neighbour. As first meetings go, theirs was hate at first sight with a twist of lust.
With neither Ginger or Derek being able to deny their attraction for one another; we get a wonderful story filled with witty banter and dirty talking foreplay between a feisty heroine and the alpha male.
Protecting What’s His was a good representation of Tessa Bailey’s signature romances. You can always expect a well written story filled with good humour, loveable characters and guaranteed heat. -

”The longer it takes me to get between your thighs, the rougher I’m going to be when I finally get in there. Understand?”
Love Love Love an alpha male with a dirty mouth and Derek did not disappoint!
Twenty three year old Ginger has been taking care of her sister since she was ten years old, she finds an opportunity to steal her good-for-nothin-skank mom’s money (which she probably earned while turning tricks) and give seventeen year old Willow a better life by leaving Nashville and moving to Chicago. Ginger and Willow moves in across the hall from Lieutenant Derek Taylor. It doesn’t take long for Derek and Ginger to be at each other’s throats, their explosive tempers can only mean one thing once they hit the sack, and from the moment they met Derek let his expectations be known”I want you underneath me in my bed. I want to be buried inside you so deep that I have to remind you of your own name. And I want those motherfuckers leering at you from the other side of the bar to smell me on you for a week afterward.”
To his surprise Ginger loved the way he spoke to her, but did that mean she made it easy on him, No, she made him work for it. Ginger’s past holds her back, she doesn’t believe in more, doesn’t believe in happily ever after and she is scared of turning into the one person she hates, her mother.”Give me a chance, Beautiful girl.”
Derek can be sweet, but she likes him nasty, the reaction Ginger brings out in him surprises even him; his strong need to protect both Ginger and Willow. He knows she’s keeping something from him and digs into her past and not liking the ugly that could hurt them. Ginger does everything she can to distract Derek but he’s on to her game”You would like that, wouldn’t you? A spanking followed by a long, wet ride on my dick? ”
new image
With the help of Willow, she realizes that she needs to move forward and make things right, even though she has no clue what she’s walking in to.”Look at me. You own me. I’m owned.”
Protecting What’s His was a quick HOT STEAMY read, but it also had something more, characters you care about and a bit of drama to switch it up a bit. I wish it was longer so I can enjoy them a bit more, but I’m greedy like that so more please! Everything happened in a span on two weeks or so, but we did get an epilogue. Really looking forward to the next one in the series.

***edited due to flag 03.25.13*** -
This book was seriously sizzling.
I am probably not going to be able to do it justice, but I am seriously going to try because I think this could be one of those books that people pass by and I beg you, don't! Read it!
Ginger Peet is our main female character and what a lady. She is 23 and because of a drugged up, prostitute mother she has been taking care of her younger sister, Willa, her whole life.
They finally get the courage up to leave when they find $50,000 dollars belonging to there mothers drug dealer lying in the house. They take the money and run to Chicgao where they meet Derek Tyler and the pursuit begins.
I loved Ginger, she is comes across as this really confident girl, very assured of herself, but what she really is, is a survivor. The banter between her and her sister was hilarious, but unlike some books where the humour can get to much, it didn't feel false or contrived.
I felt really connected to these characters in a really short time, the book isn't long, that has got to say something about the authors ability to create wonderfully real characters worthy of our time.
Derek is another great character, he is a cop, a protector, a totally hot, jealous, alpha who brings a whole new meaning to " Protecting What's His" . I loved him. He wanted Ginger from the beginning and went after her with cocky, single mindedness. His bluntness was all we have come to expect and more of a bossy dominant character. The words this man came away with , phew!!
"Point taken. But one more thing". Derek leaned forward, resting his hands on either side of her on the counter, then dipped his head lower. Ginger's mind reeled as he ran his tongue upward in one long like of her neck. " The longer it takes me to get between your thighs, the rougher I am going to be when I finally get there. Understand?"
Like I said above this is quite a short book, but it is easy to read with what must be perfect pacing and execution. For all the length of this I was totally sucked in, the storyline was interesting and I felt a connection to these characters, I wanted their happy ending.
Sometimes the simple things really are the best and I don't mean that as an insult, totally the opposite. This is quite simply a very enjoyable romance book and I don't have a single complaint. I will be recommending this to all my romance book, alpha loving friends. -
I came for the dirty talk and stayed for the smutty parts.
Don’t judge me 👀
Also, if there are any innocent sweet souls out there, please, if you meet an asshole twice, and by then he threatens to get you in my bed screaming his name, run the other way. But in a book? 🫠 yeah… still don’t judge me. -

“I think we have two different definitions of what working for it means.”
“Oh? What’s your definition?”
“Do you want to me to tell you?” He brushed his lips along the underside of her jaw. “Or show you?”

This was maybe a little naive of me, but I was hoping this could redeem Tessa Bailey for me, since I've found her RomCom-ish contemporary romances have not worked for me. I mean, it's kind of hard to mess up a raunchy novella with that type of cover.
There were a handful of moments I actually did really like, but unfortunately, way more that I didn't like. Let's start with the positive because I actually thought this was really sweet.“You’re late.”
“And you’re fucking gorgeous.”
And I was actually even really charmed by the heroine, Ginger (h). I thought she was snarky and had agency. And I loved the way she would call Derek "Lieutenant" or "Officer" in a tongue-in-cheek way.
But it went downhill from there. Unsurprisingly, the male love interest was horrifically disappointing. One of his first lines of inner-monologue would be telling of the rest of his personality:"Please, please don’t let me be getting a hard-on for a teenage girl. Be legal, at least, so I can sleep tonight knowing I’m not a raging pervert."
...WHAT. Anyway, in every single book I read where the FMC has freckles, it's immediately sexualised and I die a little every time."A sprinkling of freckles dusted her nose, making her a cross between sex goddess and girl next door."
Personally, I really dislike height difference in romance so this didn't do it for me either. It felt like he was trying to intimidate her and strip her of the agency she'd shown she had."He took a step forward, bringing them toe-to-toe, forcing her to look up if she wanted to meet his eyes."
Then he admits to wanting to take out his stress and anger on women by being aggressive and rough during sex?Women wanted him to play the hero after hours, but once he clocked out for the evening, he had little interest in being nice. In the end, the women he dated usually found his tastes too intense for their liking."
However...I admit that sometimes, what came out of the MMC's mouth was so ridiculous that I couldn't help but let out a chuckle.“No, no, you tight little virgin. I’m not going to let you off so easily. We’ve barely gotten started.”
What the fuck am I supposed to do now having read this sentence. And apparently he's like, the horniest man alive and the way he's seriously sweating about it is too funny to me.“Listen to me, baby. From the time we walk in the door to my apartment, you will have less than a minute before I put my cock inside you. No foreplay. No kissing. There won’t be any time, because you’ve got me strung so damn tight I can barely think straight. I need you to keep yourself wet for me on the ride home. Starting now.”
Like okay babe! Let me press the on button and start the timer! Then there was this...“Wake up, you little cock tease,” he’d growled against her neck.
So....in conclusion! This was a mess aside from a heroine I actually really liked. The OW drama, weirdo hero and funky writing unfortunately outweighed the few pleasant aspects. I think I'll leave Tessa Bailey to other readers for now.━━━━━━━━━━━ ♡ ━━━━━━━━━━━
