In early 2012, Jason Erik Lundberg was asked to deliver a plenary talk to Singapore's best and brightest young creative writers. He chose to speak about the extraordinary impact of speculative fiction on every facet of his life, from childhood to the birth of his daughter, and beyond. This talk was expanded, and integrated with a multi-part short story about a brave little girl who tumbles down a very different kind of rabbit hole, and must use her bravery and intelligence in order to find her way home. The result is a 14,000-word hybrid-essay of such power and poignancy that the real and the imagined become inextricably mixed.

A lovely hybrid-essay about speculative fiction inspired by the birth of Lundberg's daughter! This is the first Math Paper Press publication that I've read - looking forward to reading more :-)

I can identify with a fellow geek as someone who also got his sci-fi awakening through Asimov (for me, his short stories). The structure of the book is a non-fictional speech interspersed with a short speculative story by him. I found the story less interesting and engaging then his own recollection of his life experiences - the latter was nice to read about. The short short stories in the epilogue were also pretty good. A nice short read for the train rides.

The "rah rah write" speech is well-written with some interesting pieces of advice, while the addition of the entwining story actually detracts from the overall power of Jason's words. The two works taken separately could work quite well, but the mash of them together comes across as haphazard.
