The Brothers Mad (Mad Reader 5) Reviews

  • Barry

Classic comic book era MAD. Some their greatest parodies are here, "Shermlock Shomes," "Shadow," "Alice In Wonderland." "Melvin of the Apes," "Lil Abner," "Smilin' Melvin." The list goes on. If you only read one MAD paperback this year, you should be shot!

    Hahaha!

Not up to the usual wackiness of MAD, a little dated.

A nutty collection of items from Mad magazine. For awhile back in the early 1960s, I was a real addict. Since then, the passion cooled, but I have always appreciated the offbeat humor of this publication.

Included: a selection poking fun at "THe Shadow," featuring Lamont Shadowskeedeeboomboom and Margo Pain. Another takeoff, this time on Fearless Fosdick, entitled "Fozless Fooznick." Or (*groan*), "Shermlock Shomes in The Hound of the Basketballs."

Anyhow, a bit goofy, but an interesting look back in time.

I suppose all the boys in grade school liked Mad Magazine, just as they would later like, although many would try to suppress this, Playboy. We would read the things like adults would read People, another publication emphasizing pictures and requiring familiarity with the popular culture.

The gossip part so thoroughly confused me. The poking fun at the army stuff was timeless.
