Conflict and Crisis in the Religious Life of Late Victorian England Reviews
-
This is a well-researched, well-written and intriguing book which explains how the robust, relevant faith of the Clapham evangelicals gave way to more sentimental and subjective forms of Christianity. It highlights the failure of the church to address the intellectual challenges from without and the subsequent alternatives to Christianity which became popular. In charting the changes in belief during this period much light is shed on belief in our own time.

I found this book fascinating. Many of the conflicts occurring and sometimes even resolved in the late 1800s and early 1900s have persisted or re-emerged. Arranged by conflict topic, the chronology does skip around and makes it hard to understand the timeline.
***Disclaimer, the author is my grandfather, so there is probably some bias in my review. However, the content is fascinating regardless, if your'e interested in the evolution of the British (and American) church.***
