Everything was going along just fine with this book. It was cute, but nothing amazing - and then we get to the last 40 or so pages and it went totally down the drain.

If you love a reunion story with heart, soul, and a little rodeo, this book is for you! It's a secret baby reunion story with angst, memories, and a lasting love.

The Bullrider's Brother is a sweet touching story about a woman who can't forgive her high school sweetheart and a sweetheart who can't forgive himself. The reunion of the two and their five-year-old son is absolutely heartwarming. It's a quick, enjoyable read.

I was pulled in from the first chapter when the hero thought, "the rodeo prize money wasn‘t worth the trip down memory lane" Love it!

I absolutely adore reunion stories and this one did not disappoint. I can't wait for more from Lynn Cahoon!

Lynn Cahoon created a hero that every woman would want. He's not a "knight in shining armor" but "The Bull Rider's Brother." Set in modern Idaho, the ambiance of a small town and the characters of rural America come to life. The realism of place, characters, and situations make for an enchanting read. The characters, especially hero and heroine, James and Liz, are those one can relate to and root for. This is a sweet romance that I would recommend, especially while sitting on a front porch swing sipping lemonade.

Very pleasant read and was a great bargain also. I was able to purchased for .99 on amazon's deal of the day. It really deserves 4.5 stars. But I have read really amazing story's lately that really took my breath away and just could not justify the 5 stars this time. I would be interested in more from this author though.

This is the Love story between Lizzie & James. They were junior high and high school sweethearts. And Lizzie always felt there was one big obstacle between them,James brother Jessie. The boys mother walked away from them and their father fell apart when she left. James took it upon himself to always look out for Jessie. So when Jessie decided to go into Bull Riding, James changed the plans he had made with Lizzie and went with Jessie to manage his career. He told her he would be back, but she gave him an ultimatum, so he left and never looked back or called. 6 years later he and his brother are back in town for the local rodeo. At the same time Lizzie is in town having a much needed girls night out with her long time best friend Barb. Lizzie has spent the last 5 & 1/2 years helping to run the family cabin rental business and taking care of her dying mother and oh yeah surviving on Medicaid & food stamp assistance for herself and her little boy JR. Yep you guessed it, she had a baby by James. And their worlds are about to collide. There are a few surprises to the story. One thing that upset me most about the book, was how many people knew about the little boy JR and never told James about him. They didn't feel it was there place. And she didn't have a way to get in touch and wasn't sure she really wanted to because she didn't want to deal with him walking out on their son the way he did her " that part I totally understood" the little boy is just to precious for words. And again the story is well worth the full price, but I am happy I was able to get it for a bargain.

The Bull Rider’s Brother is a heart-warming story of the reuniting of two people torn apart by misguided family loyalty. James felt a duty toward his brother whom he could not deny, while Lizzie allowed her mother’s dictum to keep the child they’d created a secret from his father.
This is a ‘feel good’ story where we soon understand what drives James and Lizzie. While both had been torn by the need to choose, their past decisions fit their characters. Lizzie’s prime concern is the care and wellbeing of her son. While James, abandoned by his mother as a child, had developed an overwhelming need to look after his slightly younger brother, a need which followed him into adulthood and away from Lizzie for some years. Even as they meet again at a local rodeo and James learns about his son, Lizzie soon realises every decision he makes still revolves around his brother. While her feelings for him had never changed, she doubts his ability to consider their son a priority in his life. As the story develops the author cleverly sprinkles in snippets to show us brother Jesse is not the selfish taker we initially assume and that he had manoeuvred them into returning to their home town so James could learn about his son. Other family members also conspire to bring Lizzie, James and JR together.
Sharing a little more detail of their growing awareness of each other could have improved the story. While it is a sweet/clean story, more emotional depth would have increased the tension and heightened my reading pleasure. I did find it a little confusing to have the three male characters all with same initial ‘J’ names.
The Bull Rider’s Brother is an enjoyable light read and I don’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a light, sweet book.

    Couldn't finish this one.
Interesting (but not unique) premise: Former sweethearts separate badly, she finds out she's pregnant but doesn't tell the father, he returns and the story takes off from there. This is one of my favorite plot devices but the tension that should have been there just wasn't. James finds out in public about his son at a very awkward time and he.... doesn't really react. He says he's mad but acts happy. There's zero tension coming from him or from his son. As a cowboy, living in a more macho environment, wouldn't he have had more, well, heat over this? Maybe I'm too fond of alpha males and not seeing the sizzle coming off of James. Lizzy, the heroine, also came off as too sweet, too martyrlike for my taste. Her mom's passed (this isn't a plot device, I'm not spoiling anything), her dad's no use (grieving for his wife), Lizzy's on hard times and yet she's never tried to get child support? Too many unanswered questions and not enough tension for me. I put it down about 40% through and deleted it from my device.

I bought this as a Kindle Daily Deal, so it wasn't expensive or I'd be terribly frustrated over buying it.
If you're a fan of sweeter stories, this might work for you. I like some sweet, e.g., Robyn Carr or Nora Roberts but this wasn't in their league. If you like a little grit in your stories (e.g, Kristen Ashley) or even a little funny (e.g., Victoria Dahl), I'd look elsewhere.

A contemporary Western romance that rings true to the West, celebrates the cowboy, and honors the women who put up with them. Lynn Cahoon's debut, THE BULL RIDER'S BROTHER, is a delight for fans of the modern West.
Liz Hudson may be down but she's far from out. She has a son to raise, a dad to help through grief, and rental cabins to manage. When her son's father (James) returns to town, old feelings surface, nearly swamping her. But this daughter of the West is made of tougher stuff.
Although the story leans toward James' journey while he finds his place and helps his brother stand on his own, the heroine really steals the reader's heart--and their five year old son steals the limelight. The Western setting is skillfully written so the reader feels she's in Idaho during rodeo season.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable tale. I look forward to more of Cahoon's books.

Lizzie's heart jumps in her throat when she sees James again after a long time between them. She's scared to death he will find out the truth about her son. James left one day without saying a word to Lizzie he was leaving. He always took care of his little brother and put him above everyone else including himself. Now that he knows he has a son and wants a life again with Lizzie he has to make some tough decisions. Will Lizzie be the winner this time?

A cute story about a couple who learns that love doesn't always fade away. They even grow up a bit during the story and learn a few things about each other. The characters work well and the setting was good.

Small town life wasn't always in Lizzie Hudson's plans, but she has learned to change her priorities. She thinks she is doing fine until her past comes back to town in the form of James Sullivan, her high-school sweetheart. He left her with more than a broken heart and during the town rodeo weekend he comes face to face with his past. This is a great story of how the decisions of our youth can shape more lives than just our own. It's a story of love and forgiveness with great characters and a satisfying conclusion.

James and Lizzie are put through an emotional ringer during a weekend that changes everything. I really like that these characters have to do some serious soul searching, own up to past mistakes, and reexamine the dreams they left behind in order to get their second chance. Colorful and well-sketched secondary characters add meaning and layers to the story, and the setting drew me in from the very beginning. This was an emotionally satisfying read!

This is such a sweet book and filled with emotional upheavals and happy reunions. I loved reading every minute and was sorry it was so short.

Poor James had his world turned upside down but he handled it all - definitely the type of guy I'd want in my corner. Definitely an enjoyable read and I can't wait for the sequel!

  • Lily Dewaruile

I enjoyed reading this story, drawn first by the title. If you like cowboys, secret babies, second chances and reconciliations, this story is a good place to start.

Note: I don't give stars or rate books by authors I know personally.

The Bull Rider's Brother is the kind of book that makes you believe in second chances...
I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to the next in the series!!

  • Janeiowa

It's a shame this delighful novel was given such a cheesy title. The plot is good; the characters are interesting and worth knowing.

I look forward to more books by Ms Cahoon.

  • Luisa Rivas

An easy peasy novel, but I didn't love the male character, he was a little wishy-washy

  • Tina Detwiler

Really cute! Read it all today :)

  • Kellie Read

Short but sweet!! Loved this book such a good read!!!!!

  • Suzie Quint

Secret babies is a romance trope I'm not fond of because it's rare that the mother has a good reason for not telling the father about his child. That's the case here, but what really stopped me is that when she tells him, he says he's "mad, determined, confused, and downright angry" but he doesn't act like he's any of those things. In fact, he doesn't even act surprised. Really? She tells him he has a 5 year old child (in a public place no less) and neither of them act like it's that big a deal.

So then I looked at the other reviews and saw some spoilers for the ending and decided this book would make me mad about the time I couldn't get back. DNF at 8% (three chapters).

  • Cheri

    Boring

Both characters didn't so it doesn't me. I liked the idea of the story but it's like. Oh yeah this is your son and JR this is your dad . It's like no feelings. Tension. Angst just dumb. Couldn't get pass 26%

  • Mary

    Traveling Man

When James left Lizzy, he is no idea that she was pregnant. Once again she fell in second behind his brother. James felt he had to support his brother's bull riding career.

  • Lyn Sweetapple

Woman does not tell man he has a son. They reunite years later. This is a trope, but Cahoon handles this is a way that freshens up the trope and introduces some really great characters.

The Bull Rider's Brother is a sweet, sensual and emotionally deep romance.

Rodeo weekend has arrived at Shawnee, Idaho. Lizzie is happy to see her best friend and have a girl’s weekend, but she can’t help but compare her single-mom life to her best friend’s successful career. She can’t help but wonder what could have been, but she would not change her life for anything. But now she knows better than to trust a cowboy.

After almost six years away James returns to Shawnee, Idaho with his bull-riding brother for rodeo weekend. But there are many surprises awaiting him that weekend. Including the girl now woman that he left behind to follow his brother. Can he win over her heart again before she accepts another man’s marriage proposal?

Lizzie kept her son a secret from James. He left her without a note, a call or not looking back. Now they will have to find a way to keep from breaking little JR’s heart during their battles. There is a lot of chemistry between Lizzie and James, but there are also a lot of things to forgive for each of them.

This story has a lot of depth and is very interesting in how their own past decisions or even someone else’s can affect the way that person will act or react in certain circumstances.

I had fun reading this story, the chemistry and depth both emotional and psychological was fun to discover as I read along, and the humor in some scenes was a nice touch away from the drama. If you like sweet, sensual and a little humor in your romance this story is for you.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I am not normally a cowboy fan. I know, I know. How can I live in North Dakota and not be a HUGE cowboy fan, right? The fact is that in the past the books that I had read that were “western” left a lot to be desired for me. We all have our genres that quiver our toes. I am glad to be able to say that I will consider more cowboys in the future.
I understand the need to be there for your family. Sometimes that is the only thing that we can hold on to in life. However, James didn’t have to end things the way he did and I wish Lizzie would have been a little stronger. When the two of them run into each other years later, the sparks fly. I
This is a sweet romance that is perfect for a light read and curling up with a glass of wine and a box of chocolates! Enjoy.

The Bull Rider's Brother is the first book in the Shawnee Valley Series and is a heartwarming second chance romance. Lizzie and James were sweethearts but were split up when family loyalty prompted him to leave and support his brother in his career. The story is well written and has drama, romance, and a small surprise for James.
I read and reviewed a copy of this book with no obligation.

Great story. Well written, but not well edited.
