Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet (Gilbert the Opossum) Reviews

  • Qt

A fun and humorous story. I liked how Gilbert was nice to his little sister.

  • Nora

I liked when they switched costumes.

  • Anthony

Gilbert thinks he has the best original costume for the school Halloween parade, when a mix up at home occurs, Gilbert has to some quick thinking to avert disaster. Silly Halloween fun.

  • Kaethe

Oh no! It's the wrong costume for the Halloween parade at school.

More appealing to kids than to their parents, I think.

  • Kid's Picture Book Review

This is a cute Halloween story about a brother and a sister. The older brother, Gilbert, is really excited to be a martian space pilot and his sister, Lola, is going to be a ballerina. A mixup has Gilbert wearing the wrong costume at his school parade. There isn’t that much to this story but I like the way Gilbert ends up being really nice to his sister and how much Lola looks up to Gilbert and always wants to be just like her big brother. I see this happen all the time with my 2 little ones. My daughter is always learning and trying to do whatever her big brother is doing.

This was a cute little story about a Gilbert and his little sister Lola getting ready for Halloween.
Lola looks up to her big brother and wants to do everything that he does, including wearing the same costume. Gilbert still has to get through his school day before he can take Lola trick or treating that night. The story becomes amusing when Gilbert gets to school and discovers a bit of a mix up.

  • Sue

An unexpected costume switch with his sister almost ruins Gilbert's day. In the end he makes the best of a bad situation.

  • SLoMoe

Kids thought it was too predictable. I liked it, but i would agree you could see the outcome from the first 3 pages.

  • Molly Cluff (Library!)

Gilbert mixes up his Halloween costume with his sisters' ballerina costume when he takes his costume to school in a paper bag. Decently cute halloween book (though probably too texty for storytime).

  • Nichole

I could actually see reading this to my students. It has good messages about conformity, gender norms, loving each other, going with the flow, etc.

  • Emily Orton

This book was very cute and tells a good Halloween story. I would read this to my class before Halloween!

  • Eleanor Piglet

    OK, but pretty good book.

  • Sarah

To his horror, Gilbert and his little sister mix up their costumes on the day of the Halloween parade

Having younger brothers, I can understand what it means to have a sibling that wants to copy everything you do. I can also understand that sometimes things can get really mixed up and that you want to be an individual aside from your siblings.

I thought this was a fun book to see how Gilbert, the main character, treated his sister, which was with kindness and understand except when it came to going to school. There he wanted to be independent and known for someone who created something special but he finds out that maybe that is not so, that others may have same ideas. In the end, by chance, it is his sister that helps he be that individual he so craves.

I loved the total interaction of the both of them and his love and respect in the end for his sister. The term of "Trick or Treat Smell My Feat" was secondary to what the actual book was about. Very clever!

Solidly illustrated, but a bit too heavy on the moral. To be honest, I wasn't enjoying the story before Gilbert donned his sister's costume. The story was sweet, but plain to me. Once Gilbert changed into the costume, however, I couldn't relate. As a young boy, I'd have far preferred my teacher's scolding over wearing a tutu. It's possible I'm in the wrong mood for this story, or maybe the story could have been funnier if the illustrations weren't so realistically rendered. A farcical touch and better expressions on the faces may have added levity where it seems missing. I'll read this book with my daughter and see what she thinks of it.

  • Rosa Cline

A very nicely written Halloween story about a little girl wanting to dress like her brother after her mama already made her costume. She mimics him in everything she does which results in him accidentally taking her costume to school instead of his. Which turns out to his surprise as good because the costume he thought was going to be 'one of a kind' seems everyone else had the same idea! So he ends up in a unique costume after all (his sisters ballerina) and he follows through with his promise to take her trick or treating.

My 4 y.o. thinks this book is hilarious. He's wanted to read it every night for the past 5 nights and he also wants us to act out parts of the book. That alone makes it a winner for me. I find it cute.

  • Marcia

The perfect read for kindergartners awaiting their Halloween costume parade. A case of wanting to have a unique costume and then getting it switched with sister's by mistake. The cute animal illustrations, funny verse and kid-appealing topic make it a winner.

  • babyhippoface

I liked him the tutu, myself.

  • Jennybug

The title says it all, children love this book

  • Brittany White

I enjoyed the realistic plot with animals!

  • Kelley Mcalhany

Just a funny story for kids.

  • Allisa Zamarripa-Garza

Great Halloween book with Gilbert and his friends!!!
