In this second installment of the Eternal Dead Series, normal reality is turned upside down as Holland and Jonas attempt to restore their taboo love amidst a dire clash among witches, zombies, and vampires.

Since the demise of their leader, vampires have threatened to take over the peaceful town of Frombleton, brazenly roaming the streets while mingling with society and feeding on humans. And if that’s not bad enough, a zombie outbreak that was isolated to a separate rural area is slowly creeping toward the city, leaving a trail of ravaged corpses in its wake.

Hundreds of miles away at Stoneham Academy, Holland Manning is learning the ancient art of witchcraft and practicing her emerging occult powers. After discarding her nerdy girl image, Holland is finally well liked and admired for the first time in her life, but she’s finding it difficult to enjoy her newfound popularity when she’s aching for her true love, Jonas. A soul-stealing hex has forced Jonas to return to his homeland in search of a cure, and Holland is eagerly waiting to find out if his humanity has been restored.

Chilling and suspenseful, The Dark Hunger recounts the horrors of humans living among the undead—and the uncertainty of forbidden love amidst sinister forces.

    Feast or Famine

In the second installment of the Eternal Dead series, “The Dark Hunger” by Joelle Sterling picks up where book one left off with Jonas being back in Haiti.

This book was a good read. The most interesting parts of the book involved the relationship of Jonas and Holland and I wish Sterling would have spent more time going into depth on Holland at the Academy and why her blood was so important. I felt most of the book was spent with the zombie outbreak. Too much of the book. I have high hopes that book 3 will give more understanding on Holland and more of a storyline to Jonas and Holland’s budding relationship. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series.

Jonas, cursed by voodoo to become the walking undead, is still, in spite of his need for flesh, human or animal a caring young man with a good heart. In this second book of the series, he returns to his homeland in Haiti, which has been decimated by an earthquake. His goal is to see that his family is safe and taken care of, yet he sorely misses Holland, a young witch he met and fell in love with in America.

Meanwhile, Holland has enrolled in the Stoneham Academy for students with special abilities like hers. Zac, the vampire, is mysteriously missing and Jarrett, his human 'blood bank' is rather pleased with that.

As with book one, there are many characters introduced, or re-introduced in various settings and locations. This is a dragging point for the story with dialogue that seems shallow while each action of the character seems overdone.

As the story progresses, each character has his or her own battle to win. Jonas has returned to America, in part because he has been having dreams of Holland in danger and in part because he is hearing screaming in his head and it is coming from The U.S.

I really wanted to like this book more, but, as with book 1, I could not connect with the characters, the plots and sub-plots were all over the map and the dialogue did not flow realistically.

This book was provided by NetGalley and Strebor Books in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed the first book in the series by Joelle Sterling for a review sent by the publicist. This round, I was eager to read it and got it from the library. While reading the first fifty plus pages, I was a little disappointed with this one as far as Holland's character in a witch-like school to demonstrate their skills among their classmates. My reasoning for disappointment is because other authors' and books have done this like Harry Potter, Vampire Academy, and even the series written by P.C. Cast...for me, it makes the books less entertaining and dull for me as a reader. I hope the novel gets beyond this and back into the creepiness, eerie part of the story I liked with historical factors briefly like the first one.

Holland rocked in the first series, but Eden is finding a way of escape from the zombie-like creatures in the night. Holland became too forthcoming and weak in this one once she joined the school, as for Eden is a new Spanish star in my book and hope to see her in the next series. I hate there was less of Jonas, more so until the end. Glad Eden met with Gabe to fight the forces of evil together.

Killer line: "But their powers are strong...Nothing is stronger than the power of love."

I am truly enjoying the eternal dead series so far. The second book is a little more exciting than the first. Can't wait to read book 3.
