Flames of Wrath Reviews

Stating that “this book is something new and different” for prolific author JL Campbell is an understatement. This book is completely stepping out of the proverbial box of “suspense with romance” for Ms. Campbell. FLAMES OF WRATH is a page turning thriller from the Prologue to the Epilogue. Alexia Leighton is the featured character in this story, along with her mother, Geneva Leighton. When we meet Alexia, she is attending a spring break party in Jamaica, along with other fellow university students enjoying a break from school. Alexia and most of the students are from Florida. One minute Alexia is thinking about leaving the “party”, and the next minute she becomes a victim of a brutal assault. It’s a tragic tale that is ripped from today’s headlines. What happens in the remaining chapters of this story is an all-out campaign of revenge.
If “Mama Bear” was a person, her name would be Geneva Leighton. Just watching her become an active participant as her daughter’s advocate (and I’m putting that mildly) from a tearful mother at her daughter’s bedside is mind-blowing. Those who have an inkling of what she is doing, like her husband, Spencer, and her son, Jaden are giving her plenty of leave-way.
The Epilogue provides an exhale moment. Don’t look for an HFN or HEA. However, there is a resolution, whether you agree with it or not.
One thing for sure, the versatility of JL Campbell as a writer is brilliantly displayed in this engrossing story. Kudos to her and her son who assisted in getting this story on paper and making it very credible. It’s a must read! I recommend FLAMES OF WRATH for your reading pleasure.

"Some kinds of dirt rise to the surface, even if you sweep them under the carpet."

Flames of Wrath by J. L. Campbell was an addicting, propulsive read about privilege, justice, racism and revenge. If you've ever wondered about what lengths a mother would go to, to get justice for her daughter after she was set up by "friends" and violated in the worst ways, then this one is a perfect example. The story starts off with a bang with a very triggering event and from there, the author grips you by the throat and holds you hostage. You won't want to put this one down until all the pieces of the puzzle are put together. This is one psychological wild ride you don't want to miss.

Even though this one was action-packed, it tackled some heavy themes and topics of:
    • the ways the justice system fails Black women
    • examination of "friendship"
    • the repercussions of social media and cybersurveillance
    • vigilante justice when the legal system fails
    • the complications of cooperation with international entities
    • the rich using their donation money to influence college admission for their kids
    • r*pe culture and the systems that protect perpetrators
    • the strength of Black mothers

If you're looking to diversify your TBR and read more small press women authors, then give this one a try. Thanks to @iamblackodyssey @cocoachapters for the gifted copy and tour opportunity.

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did. What happened to Alexia was absolutely despicable, and the culprits deserved everything they got. I applaud Geneva for taking things into her own hands and handling business in a way that the justice system was not going to serve her child. However, I do have a few qualms with this book. This first thing is that I feel like we're never given a satisfactory explanation of why the so-called friends did what they did. We were given two very surfacey things that, for me, did not give the depth that I was looking for. There was a barely formed difference in opinion, with no real back story to account for the actions that took place that night. Even as the story progressed, I never felt like I got the full picture of what Alexia's friendship and life were like before the incident.

Secondly, Geneva's relationship with her family and, in particular, her daughter did not convey the connection I was expecting. After a while, it felt like Geneva's vengeance was more about her own ego rather than her daughter. Their was a particular intimate piece of evidence that Geneva decided to release to the public, with no thought to the effect it would have on her daughter being exposed for consumption in such a manner. Alexia then asks her mother to remove it, and she flat out refuses. As a mother that was so disturbed and distressed about what happened to her daughter, I could not understand her justification for that specific action, especially when the lack of it would not have affected her ability to accomplish her goal of destroying the perpetrators.

Thirdly, the way Geneva dealt with Deja left a horrible taste in my mouth. In one breath, Geneva wants us to see her as this self-sacrificing mother that will go to the ends of the earth to protect her innocent child, but she is simultaneously destroying someone's else's innocent child. The fact that she knew Deja's backstory and still felt no remorse for her actions towards that girl just solidified that this was all just an ego trip by an unlikeable MMC for me. Deja literally had no part or fault in what happened to Alexia, so the ending just pissed me off more than anything else.

Flames of Wrath is not what I expected from this author. I am quite familiar with her beautiful romances, and this is definitely not that! Alexia Leighton is with college friends on the beautiful island of Jamaica, when suddenly, friends turn into attackers. Her mother, Geneva Leighton, is determined to get justice for her daughter’s vicious assault by any means necessary. Suddenly, Alexia’s attackers find out “an even swap ain’t no swindle,” when they find themselves victims of violence as well.

This book truly took me on an emotional rollercoaster of feelings, it’s a chilling thriller with suspense, revenge, and a mother’s desperate actions to get revenge for her daughter’s violent attack. Flames of Wrath is thought provoking, it raises questions about what you’d do in that particular situation, and how you’d seek revenge and protect your loved ones. Author JL Campbell has written an edge of your seat, unputdownable action-packed novel, and I’d recommend it to anyone who loves suspense, thrillers, and full of action types of books.

    What a story

A mother scorned is a dangerous one. Although the story had a lot of suspense, the unthinkable acts of defiance made this a different kind of story. I'll give this story 3.5 stars overall.

    Title: Flames of Wrath
"Flames of Wrath" is an emotionally charged and gripping tale of a mother's relentless pursuit of justice and revenge for the injury of her beloved daughter. Authored by J.L. Campbell, this book takes readers on a rollercoaster journey through the depths of a mother's love and the fiery determination it ignites.

The story revolves around the resilient protagonist, Geneva, whose life is shattered when her daughter, Alexia, becomes the victim of a heinous crime. Instead of succumbing to despair, Geneva transforms into a force of hell, driven by an insatiable thirst for vengeance. As the narrative unfolds, we witness her transformation from an ordinary, loving mother into a formidable avenger, stopping at nothing to bring those responsible to justice.

Campbell skillfully crafts complex characters who grapple with their own moral dilemmas as they become entangled in Geneva’s quest for retribution. The book delves deep into the psyche of its characters, exploring the boundaries of morality, the price of revenge, and the consequences of one woman's unwavering determination.

The writing in "Flames of Wrath" is both haunting and hypnotic. The author paints vivid scenes, creating an atmosphere that is both tense and emotional. Readers will find themselves completely engrossed in Geneva’s journey, feeling her pain, anger, and determination as though they were their own.

One of the book's strengths lies in its exploration of the theme of justice versus revenge. It prompts readers to question the lengths they would go to protect their loved ones and whether vengeance can ever truly bring closure. This moral ambiguity adds depth to the storyline, making it more than just a tale of retribution.

As the plot races towards its climax, "Flames of Wrath" keeps readers on the edge of their seats, with unexpected twists and revelations that challenge our preconceived notions about right and wrong. The pacing is impeccable, and the tension continues to escalate until the final, breathtaking conclusion.

In "Flames of Wrath," J.L. Campbell has crafted a powerful narrative that explores the complexities of love, vengeance, and justice. It is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged read that will stay with you long after you've turned the last page. Whether you're a fan of thrillers, family dramas, or stories of unwavering determination, this book is a must-read that will leave you contemplating the boundaries of human emotion and the lengths one can go to protect the ones they love. Highly recommended for those who crave a compelling and thought-provoking story.

Be careful how you treat some one’s child!

Geneva was not playing about Alexia. The police were dragging their feet when it came to Alexia’s case, but Geneva did what she had the power to do... find the people who hurt her baby. The mystery in this book was not who committed the crime because we knew that within the first couple chapters. Instead, the mystery was how revenge was taken on each person who participated in the crime. I sat on the edge of my seat as I was reading thinking what and who will be next. I enjoyed reading the multiple POV’s and getting some background on the students, most of them were already doing horrible things and had the “privileged” mindset so it made sense how they treated Alexia that night. There are several secrets that get exposed. It seemed like all the families had secrets, even Alexia’s parents were going through their own issues they had before she was assaulted. I saw the ending coming there were subtle hints dropped that lead me to suspect something would happen in the end, and I had mixed feelings about it. Aside for Alexia this person was the only other person that I felt sorry for but when seeking revenge no one is spared.

This was a fast paced read full of action and drama. I would certainly read another one of this authors books. I enjoyed her writing style and the way she kept my attention throughout the book.

    ARC REVIEW ++
A mother's quest for justice turns into a race against time to stop insidious murders that mysteriously begin populating throughout the city. A mother will go to h3ll and hot water to protect their children and even go as far to braking the law if she have to. This book also shows how dealing with childhood trauma can carry over into adulthood.
The book is advertised as a thriller, but I would consider it more of a revenge fiction. there wasn't a lot of suspense and mystery cause you are aware of the situation from the beginning.
I recommend if you love thriller!

  • Robin Holland

This book was a thriller from beginning to end. There is a saying that goes “ Revenge is a dish best served cold.” And no one was more cold blooded than the main character, Geneva Leighton. What would you do if your child, flesh of your flesh and bone of your bone was violated in an unimaginable way? Would you wait until the wheels of Justice slowly ground out the punishment? Or would you take matters into your own hands? Geneva decides to not let the scales of Justice gather dust and tips them in her favor. A cybersecurity expert, she meticulously plots the fates of each of the people that had a hand in her daughter’s assault. At times, Geneva vacillates between emerging grief for her daughter, frustration over the ineptness of the Jamaican police department and revenge toward the perpetrators. Her husband Spence, who is has been distant because of marital stress due to his infidelity, is trying to bridge the gap between them. He doesn’t fully trust Geneva’s actions and knows that she is being deceptive, but is overwhelmed with hurt and anger over his daughter and wanting Justice to be served correctly. Their son, Jaden feels the same way his father does: let the police handle the matter, but Geneva has to only look at her daughter’s condition and all bets are off. How does Alexia feel? She wants to get back to living and for her, it does not include making the guilty pay. She wants no part in her mother’s plan, but her friend Deja does. Deja, who is suffering from a past trauma, is roped into Geneva’s plan because of her guilt in not protecting Alexia. All of those involved are headed towards a collision course with destiny. With Geneva as the mastermind, the Flames of Wrath will explode and consume everyone involved, either physically or mentally. This book was a real departure from JL Campbell’s usual genre. I am so glad that she let the story play out over so many chapters. Each character involved had their own chapters , so you get to hear their thoughts and even a peek into their home lives. The idea that technology can be used to accomplish so much is really amazing and is what kept the story moving along. Geneva was a multi faceted person. She had the tender mother Lioness protecting her cub side , the cold hearted revenge seeking side , and the vulnerable wronged wife side. Whew! Geneva is a villainess for the ages!

"Flames of Wrath" by J. L. Campbell

    My Sentiments:

All that is left to say is that' Flames of Wrath' was a premeditated murder thriller from start to finish. The author gives the reader quite an exciting read that will keep one turning the pages to see what is coming next for Alexia Leighton. This seventeen-year-old was on spring break in Jamaica with supposing friends, but what kind of friends were these people? One thing about it ... Alexia survives, and all I can say is by the end of this read, one may even feel somewhat sorry for each of them.

These people who had hurt Alexia had no idea what they were in for because Alexia's mom, Geneva Leighton, was a cyber-security expert. If you are still determining what that is, please look it up... it will be worth it to know why this mother did what she had to do to find out what and who had done this to her daughter. I was in awe of it as Geneva did not get any help from the police in Jamaica and Miami, from her husband [in the beginning], and the father-in-law, so she decided to put her skills together and do what she had to do to find out who had done this horrible thing to Alexia. Will she find out? Open 'Flames of Wrath' to see how well this author brings it all out. By the way, I was impressed with Geneva and Spence's son...Jaden, along with Alexia.

The characters, especially the secondary ones, were quite interesting as Geneva could pick them out individually, and the help she got, especially from one of those people, was right on the mark. I felt a little sorry for this person, but they brought it on themselves after everything was said and done. And to see the police didn't know what and who had done what until that fire and seemed to want to blame Geneva, but that wasn't going to happen...why... because she was always able to be two steps ahead of them. Ha ha!

I stayed up ALL NIGHT to finish this and damn it was GOOD!

I really wanted to give this fast-paced revenge story five stars but Deja deserved a better fate, considering what she'd gone through as a little girl. Geneva should have shown her a lot more grace, especially as she felt equally guilty about what happened to her friend Alexia. Not to mention how shitty her own family treated her after she revealed the childhood trauma she'd experienced. Unfortunately, this is reality for way too many victims. Still, Deja deserved better, and that's the hill I'm planting my flag on. #TeamDeja forever!

With that said, mom Geneva had me rooting for her from start to finish. I love a good morally gray heroine, especially when they're Black (because Black women in this society are expected to be long-suffering mules). She was the REAL Mama Bear, doing the job that a law enforcement that doesn't care about Black women and girls refuses to do. Her single-mindedness could make her unlikable to some, but I was all for it. Her using her cyber skills to enact vengeance on her daughter's behalf. Every culprit who harmed her daughter deserved their comeuppance and I cheered for each demise, especially as they were terrible people BEFORE what they did to Alexia. I also loved how she went toe to toe with the smug police office who wanted to catch her but couldn't.

I wasn't a fan of her hubby either and sorry Geneva, but a night or two of good sex doesn't equal a healthy relationship, especially as she KNEW he'd cheated on her TWICE!!! I was mad about that too and wondered why she didn't use her amazing skills to exact retribution on him.

I definitely enjoyed a wealthy Black family (just wish hubby wasn't a cheating jerkwad) who were brilliant. Honestly, I could see this as a Lifetime movie. Someone call Shonda Rimes or Issa Rae.

ARC Review. The synopsis of this book really grabbed my attention. The horrible attack of Alexia reminded me of a real life case that happened a couple years ago. I liked the idea of a mother getting her own justice for the attack. As much as I loved this premise, I did struggle getting through the beginning of the book (about 30% of the book). Eleven characters where introduced in the first chapter (didn't know who I needed to remember) and the attack on Alexia just happened suddenly. Maybe that was intentional, but the attackers' motive is never made clear at any point of the book. As a reader that is frustrating to not know the why. They just repeatedly called her names in the book but we never have a clear understanding why Alexia was disliked by so many people including those that were supposed to be her friends. Nothing justifies the attack, but motives are important for book characters. There were also a couple cheesy lines that took me out of the book.
The story really picked up when Geneva, Alexia's mother, starts acting out her revenge plan. I think it would have been great to start the story here and then reveal details of the attackers and their motive. That way there could really be a suspense/thriller feel. The only suspense in the book is how Geneva will hurt each attacker.
I didn't really like the ending of the book. It just ended with the last revenge act and I don't agree that it was necessary. There was so much potential but some parts were rushed and others had holes.

I usually read books in one sitting. Too-hundred or four hundred pages doesn’t matter. I hunker down with snacks and a drink and go all in.

Flames of Wrath broke my reading routine.

The graphic descriptions, delivered throughout the first half of the book of the injuries Alexia Leighton suffered at the hands of friends and acquaintances while more friends stood by and did nothing got to me and made me emotional. The cruelty is just unimaginable. I had to walk away from the story a time or two. Or three.

And then they all simply left her like a pile of trash. That fired up my anger.

However, my anger could not match the anger of Geneva Leighton, Alexia’s mother. To know the horror her daughter went through, and law enforcement in two different countries were dragging their feet and some even putting up obstacles in the investigation, cemented the cybersecurity expert’s determination to find justice for her daughter by any means possible.

The strong writing in Flames of Wrath delivers a first rate thriller. Complete with a cast of well developed, complicated characters. The villains were easy to hate and not feel sympathy for, but this read paints a fine line between who’s a villain and who isn’t. You’ll have to decide for yourself.

Readers who enjoy crime thrillers and suspense will devour Flames of Wrath, and those who have never read a crime thriller should definitely start with this one!

    Enjoy!

This is a tale of revenge. You’ve heard of mama bears? Well this is a mama dragon 🐉 She came to incinerate anyone who messed with her baby.

The story opens with an extremely graphic attack. Alexia, a 17 year old girl, is just trying to enjoy her spring break. She is attacked by a group of her peers and left for dead.
What follows is a reign of vengeance and hell on all those that were involved.

Geneva (Alexia’s mother) takes no prisoners. She has a “particular set of skills” and puts them to work when taking justice for her child. I love me a morally grey character. For some time, I found myself rooting for our mama dragon. Eventually though, I feel Geneva lost sight of reason and some people paid a price I don’t think they deserved to pay.

what docked some stars for me:
In the beginning we were introduced to so many characters it was impossible to keep up with who was who. Eventually the major players were identified and it became easier to follow. Also, a more detailed description of the main culprits from the beginning would have helped to differentiate them.

Overall, this was fast paced and so entertaining you will want to read it in one sitting.

Thank you to Black Odyssey Media for sending me this book in exchange for my honest review.

    Thriller to the end!

I was on the edge of my seat from page one. Buckle up, grab a copy, and get ready for the rush of emotions all the way through to the end.

When the love of a mother turned to fury and erupted into Flames of Wrath, due to someone harming her child, be prepared for mayhem and death.

Alexia Leighton is a bright, happy-go-lucky teenager on spring break in Jamaica doing what normal teens do at this time; hang out and have fun. Little did she know that frenemies were real and evil would turn one night of fun into a nightmare and left her fighting for her life.

Geneva Leighton saw her daughter in that hospital bed and the pain she felt drove her thoughts to deeds and places she didn’t believe she had the capacity to even image, let alone, plot and execute.
Cyber Security was how Geneva Leighton made a living and it was the tool that she used to identify, take down, and extinguishing her enemies, real and imagined.

I enjoyed reading this book and will definitely be adding it to my Christmas gift list.

Thank you J.L. Campbell for another page turner.
    This is a must read!

I really enjoyed this story! It is an engrossing thriller that takes readers on a chilling journey of justice and revenge.

When Alexia Leighton survives a horrifying assault, her mother, Geneva, a cyber-security expert, is determined to protect her and seek justice. However, the tables turn when Alexia's attackers become victims of mysterious acts of violence. The tension mounts as the perpetrator stays two steps ahead, leaving everyone questioning who can be trusted.

I was so enthralled by this emotionally chilling thriller that combines suspense, revenge, and a desperate fight for survival.

JL Campbell skillfully weaves together suspense, action, and emotional depth, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.

The themes of justice and revenge are explored in a thought-provoking manner, raising questions about the lengths one would go to protect their loved ones and seek retribution.

I absolutely loved this book! This mama bear doesn’t play about her babies and the fact that she will do anything and everything to get some justice for Alexia… ooo I wouldn’t want to be on the other end of that sick. I love how the first chapter immediately drew me in to wanting more! This book was so well written. It gave everything that needed to give! I had so much fun reading it that I thought I was crazy myself thinking the mom was soo valid for all her actions! Lmao
The ending!? I did see it coming but still I was like damn she ate and left not crumbs lol. Now I love how this book touched base on a lot of serious topics that ppl go through on their day to day so it made it feel very realistic for me..but also knowing that fact and it being brought up really broke my heart for these struggles… but that being said this book was such a great read for me and can’t wait to enjoy more from this author.

  • The Paper Fan

This was an emotionally charged thriller that explores the lengths a mother will go to seek justice for her daughter. The story follows Geneva, a mother whose daughter, Alexia, is the victim of a heinous crime. Instead of relying on the legal system, Geneva takes matters into her own hands, using her skills as a cyber-security expert to track down those responsible.

Campbell's writing is powerful and compelling, drawing readers into Geneva's world and her quest for justice. The characters are well-developed, and Geneva's determination and strength make her a compelling protagonist. The story is fast-paced, with plenty of twists and turns to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

One of the strengths of "Flames of Wrath" is its exploration of themes such as justice, revenge, and the bond between a mother and her child. Geneva's unwavering love for Alexia drives her actions, even as she grapples with the moral implications of her choices.

  • Annika

I gave this book 3 stars! I wish I could’ve read it faster and in less sittings, but I was busy and I started school so sadly my attention was elsewhere.

The characters in this story felt super real and at times I forgot I was reading and was sucked in by wanting to know the drama of the characters.

The book is advertised as a thriller, but I would consider it more of a revenge fiction. I was expecting more thrills because it said it was a thriller, but there wasn’t a lot of suspense and mystery cause you are aware of the situation from the beginning.

This book reminded me at times of “Sometimes I Lie” by Alice Feeney and “The Mindf*ck Series” by S.T. Abby. Both of which I loved.

Make sure to look up triggers because there are plenty! I put them at the end of this review

Wow. I have been a fan of the author's for years because of her romance stories. And now in recent years that I have become a fan of Thrillers, this book makes me love the authors writing even more. This was such an emotional read that for the life of me would not let go. Not until I was completely finished with the story. It was entertaining and captivating and took me on a journey like no other. There is a saying Hell hath no furry like a woman scored, and add to that a Black mother that would do absolutely anything to vindicate her children, God help anyone in the path of her rage. This is also the third book I've read from this publisher, and it is one that you should have in your radar.

I received a copy of the book via the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review of my own thoughts and opinions.

Whew mama bear don't play about her cub!

Geneva certainly put her skills to the test when her teenage daughter, Alexia is brutally attacked by her fellow classmates during a spring break trip to Jamaica.

This book was definitely up my alley with the twists and turns it took while still building a good storyline.

I definitely can say Geneva is the definition of "I'll die behind my children." Cause baby this was a wild ride and the fact that she's in cyber security and the police was hot on her tail, I was hanging on the edge of my seat.

Poor Deja, she was one I really felt got the short end of the stick and didn't deserve that outcome. I really felt that she just wanted to help her friend and feel better about what happened in her past.

Overall, good story, few errors and medium paced read.

To what lengths would you go to seek revenge & is seeking vengeance really worth it? When it comes to my child, I’m moving just like Geneva in this book! I can’t imagine sending my daughter on a vacay with her friends for her to return battered, bruised, & near death. Reading this made me think of the unfortunate recent event in which Shanquella Robinson died while on vacation in Mexico with “friends”. It’s bad enough to have to warn your children about the danger in this world but to have to warn them about their friends is another story🤦🏾‍♀️

While reading, I put myself in Geneva’s shoes, & I have to admit that I was rooting for her all the way. Confess or pay the consequences. Solve the crime or move out the way! Some of the scenes made me think of the movie Final Destination & the more recent film, Lila & Eve (iykyk). I enjoyed this fast paced thriller, it left me with a range of emotions & kept me wanting more.

Goodreads Giveaway. While on a Jamacian vacation celebrating graduation, 17 year old Alexia is the victim of a brutal assault betrayed by people she trusted. Her road to recovery is slow, fraught with pain and challenges. As is often the case in sexual crimes the wheels of justice turn slowly with the police dismissive of the family's concerns. When her suspected attackers fall victim to a string of bizarre fatal accidents suspicion falls on her mother, a cyber security consultant. This was tense fast paced plot that never let the reader go. As the mother of a daughter it was a disturbing read but I also believe that anything that raises awareness of the threats that young women face in modern society and the dismissive attitude to their plight by law enforcement and the public is general is needed. Alexia and her family are well developed and relatable. A compelling narrative.

This one was a bit different in the sense that we are not guessing the who. We know from the beginning who assaulted Alexia one night at a party in the streets of Jamaica. As a reader, we watch how Geneva, Alexia’s mom, becomes detective to figure out who brutally beat and SA Alexia. Vengeance is taken into their own hands since the police are dragging their feet.

I enjoyed this POV approach where I’m not guessing the who, but find out how revenge is sought out. Along with the revenge plot, there are several sub plots going on too. Alexia’s mom and dad deal with issues within their marriage especially due to the circumstances. Alexia’s best friend who attended the party with her, is dealing with her own family demons and family turmoil. Christian, who was also at the party, is also dealing with family drama. You can say there is drama with every one of these characters, but the main point is still at the forefront. I loved it-the action, the drama, and the fast paced story. I will say that although the story did wrap up giving us closer, the ending wrap up went very quick!
