Gavin Hartmann, a well-rounded 17-year-old, dies in a tragic accident and reawakens as a plastinated cadaver on display in a museum exhibit. Fellow plastinates welcome him to their fantastical world and disclose that, as cadavers, they are entrusted guardians of undiscovered biomedical intelligence. As a permanent plastinate, he is assigned a new name, Galen, which complements his new persona as a compassionate physician. Upon probing the boundaries of his new persona, Galen acquires the critical foreknowledge to save his high school crush, Morgan, who has a life-threatening genetic heart disease. Galen has only a few short days to intercede on Morgan’s behalf before the exhibit departs for a new location and his new persona fully solidifies, erasing all memories of his past life. Moreover, Galen must comply with the cadavers’ Code of Silence to avoid dying indefinitely and must navigate the unthinkable by mingling with the living. With the aid of his newfound plastinated comrades, Galen sets out to save his first love, even though he risks perishing forever.

TITLE: CADAVER CHRONICLES - THE CODE OF SILENCE

I first saw Gunther von Hagens Body Worlds: The Anatomical Exhibition of Real Human Bodies exhibition in Los Angeles at the California Science Center in 2004. I was completely fascinated seeing the bodies, each preserved through a special “plastination” technique and placed on view in lifelike, free-standing poses, left an impression on me especially the skinless bodies of the “athlete”, the “ballerina” and the “smoker” to name a few.

Reading CADAVER CHRONICLES - THE CODE OF SILENCE brought me back to that world - I thought that Wilson & Daemicke wrote a creative story steeped in the world of medical science, anatomy, and this reader - a nurses dream come true. I loved how medical terms were weaved into the story line (great footnotes too), parts are hilarious (ie the band Tinnitus IYKYK), and the friendship elements are what I loved the most. This was a quick read with fun characters and I could imagine a great start in hopefully a series.

I enjoyed this one a lot - if you want to read a fun YA SciFi, fantasy world, steeped in medical anatomy, and the world of plastination, this is the book for you.

He slowly opened his eyes, blinking at the bright light above him as he took in his surroundings. Nothing looked familiar and he felt stiff as a board. His muscles ached as he began to sit up and he gasped as he realized he was surrounded by cadavers and skeletons. When one voiced “hello”… he screamed.

The Cadaver Chronicles is a YA Sci-fi telling the story of Gavin, a young man who has died and is now a living cadaver. He is in the process of becoming a part of a display in a museum, but first must save his girlfriend who he left behind in his other life.

This was such a fascinating concept for a story and I found myself immediately intrigued by what was going on. There is a lot of medical jargon used which can become overwhelming, but the authors did a great job of explaining the terms used. The cast of characters was fun to read about and the mission they must go on together was entertaining. This book was giving me Night at the Museum vibes!

I recommend this for readers who enjoy heist-like stories, YA sci-fi, and a fun Night at the Museum type setting.

CW: Death of a Loved One, Grief, Chronic/Terminal Illness (genetic heart disease, brain tumor), Medical Talk/Descriptions, Car Accident.

3.5! I thought this was a super interesting concept and after reading the “Why This Book Was Written” author’s note at the end I appreciated it even more than when initially reading. My kids love the show “Ridley Jones” and this was very reminiscent of the show with the “museum after hours” adventures only…make it Y.A! (Plus, we had a “bodies” exhibit in our museum in Cincinnati for years and I could picture this perfectly thanks to that.) The anatomy and medical talk throughout was overwhelming at times, but I think only because technical doctor talk makes *me* a little queasy. I don’t think it would be overly confusing or overwhelming for the majority, and it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the plot because I didn’t actually need to KNOW know anatomy to understand this story. The author did a good job explaining it throughout and the footnotes helped! I enjoyed the “mission” plot, but do wish we’d gotten more “alive” Gavin and Morgan because I think I would’ve connected to the characters better. The pacing at the beginning was a little (awkwardly) fast with the “world building”. The only other thing thing that I think would’ve given me a little more personal satisfaction is a bit more resolution for Dr. Floundary and his wife. Thank you to Red Clover Digital for the opportunity to read this one!
