The 19th Wife Reviews

Gosh I learnt a lot!
This is written in a most unusual style.
We have a historical person, Ann Eliza Young, telling her amazing story of her involvement with the Mormon Church during the late 1800's and her battle to outlaw polygamy in the USA.
Then we have the 21st century fictional 20 year old Jordan who was tossed out of the breakaway Latter-Day Saint church at the age of 14. He returns to rescue his mother from the accusation of the murder of his polygamous (and hideous) father.
Also - as we travel through the book we have various bods adding their pieces. Extracts of thesis, historical comments from politicians, clergy, historians etc.
Sound complicated?
Well it's not. Ebershoff is a genius at keeping the reader on track. Didn't have to pencil a character map on the inner cover at all. (And I often do when timelines go back and forth.)
However I did end up spending the wee hours Googling the history of the Mormans. Not because the book failed to give enough information, but because it is really a fascinating journey.
If you are interested in American or modern religious history, then this is a treat.
So very well researched.
And Ebershoff tells a delightful tale that will take you through the 500+ pages in no time.
