Aromatherapy Basics by Deborah Dolen Reviews

The first chapter of Deborah Dolen's "Aromatherapy Basics" is an introduction the aromatherapy, which is fantastic, as my knowledge of aromatherapy is limited to following my nose when it picks up a nice scent. After reading Chapter 1, I realised that there is a lot more when it comes to organizing a relaxing aromatherapy session than just having a nice scent in the room, or a nice décor.

When it comes to anything related to health, I always look for safety and health-related information. I was pleased with the fact that Deborah Dolen had written a section on safety and health-related issues, as I do not want to get myself into a situation where using aromatherapy related items would be considered dangerous. The author even looks at the toxicity aspect of aromatherapy related substances, which I find to be very professional.

One chapter is about 12 essential oils you should have when starting with aromatherapy. I was surprised to find black cumin oil in that list, as I cook quite a lot with cumin powder. Not only was I unaware of the existence of black cumin oil, I also did not know it had other uses than cooking. Since I love the smell of cumin, I will try to locate some black cumin oil to burn in my house.

Interestingly, and absolutely unknown to me or my mom, was the fact that essential oils can also be used for cooking and cleaning. Yes, I was aware of using flowers such as Marigolds for cooking, but never had I thought of actually using essential oils to enhance my dishes.

The last chapter of this book provides very important information around for instance storing oils, as well as some of the chemistry behind these oils.

This book is short, but full of fantastic information about aromatherapy anyone can use for relaxation, cooking, or even cleaning. Deborah Dolen has done everything possible to include information that is easy to understand and apply, even for beginners in aromatherapy.
