The Philosophy Of Film: Introductory Text And Readings Reviews

  • Alejandro Teruel

Interesting, quite readable but rushed-and why treat non anglo-american philosophers in such a cursory fashion? On the one hand the author of this entry writes:

...my use of the term “philosopher of film” will be broad, intended to include all of those interested in theoretical issues about the cinema.
but in the next paragraph he states:
...there is a sub-field of film theory that has significant overlap with the philosophy of film even though the majority of its practitioners operate on significantly different philosophical assumptions than Anglo-American philosophers of film. In the balance of this entry, I shall include both of these areas under the rubric of the philosophy of film, although my primary emphasis is on the contributions of Anglo-American theorists.
Still, it is a starting point and provides tantalizing references.

Good overview and some thought provoking material. The accompanying website:
www.mtholyoke.edu/omc/phil-film/index... is full of useful information. Decent introduction to film, however can be a little dry and boring to go through at times. WOuld be interesting to see an update with more recent material too.
