I think there is something special when you stumble across something totally out of the ordinary. Take for instance this book - I have been collecting the back catalogue of the Paper Tiger publishing brand for some years now and I seem to be constantly finding unexpected (but every enjoyable) surprises.

This book is perfect example - it is illustrated by one of my favourite artists Robert Ingpen. However rather than it being another comic book superhero guide it is in fact a series of short biographies from some of histories most famous characters.

The book goes on to explain that many of the stories have historic facts however over time (and in some cases how they were told and retold) they have grown to figures of fantastic proportions taking on the personna of Hero in the process- from Beowulf to King Arthur, Hercules to El Cid. The book has a fascinating approach to myths and legends - not at all what I was expecting.

Ironically there is a companion book focusing on Heroines - though sadly not from Paper Tiger which I am currently tracking down

A well compiled book on classical 'heroes' of myth and legend. The book is a very easy read for any age group and has nice illustrations for each of the mythic character.

I read this book while I was in my early teens when I really had an interest in mythology. I enjoyed the inclusion of some legends of Christendom in the mix as this in my opinion helped to link the very fine line between myth and religion.

Certainly a good intro book for further reading into mythology allowing the reader to determine which cultures myths best suits their own taste so that they may seek out more information on them. The biggest weakness is that the book does not address any Asian, American or African myths and only sticks with those held sacred by Western classical understanding of the term.

With that cover, I just had to pick this up, and I really, really enjoyed it. Interesting tales and beautiful illustrations.
