Initially this book irritated me because of how dismissive it was of generalising theories of socialism of Scotland pre/during the Enlightenment, and then turned around and generalised itself by linking the lives of a nation to five men. In what it set out to do, I think the book rather failed. But rather it providing an interesting insight into the five men in question and the similarities and differences which made them big names of the Scottish Enlightenment
