Bayard Rustin: Behind the Scenes of the Civil Rights Movement Reviews

  • Jan Briggs

This juvenile non-fiction book gave information about Bayard Rustin, the civil rights movement, the March on Washington and Rustin’s work in later years. It was easy to read and sparked curiosity to learn more about the smaller pieces that make up the larger civil rights movement. I appreciate the mention of Rustin’s sexuality and wish I had read more books about important public figures who were gay when I was growing up. Lane Kirkland, past president of AFL-CIO, said of Rustin, “He understood and taught that there are no black issues, no women’s issues, no labor issues that are not a part of the same struggle for human justice.”

Often overlooked but critical to the Civil Rights Movement.
