Tarot Magic: A Handbook of Intuitive Readings, Rituals, and Spells (Mystical Handbook) Reviews

  • Yves V.H. [Slow reading]

A short book but very informative. A helpful guide for someone who is just starting tarot reading or trying to familiarize themselves with each card. It also explains the different suits briefly to understand how to read the minor arcana cards.

  • Mellissa Bushby

Beautifully illustrated, informative and thought-provoking, this would make a lovely gift for anyone starting out in the wonderful world of the tarot. 3 and a half stars.

My rating would be 4.5 stars.
As a tarot reader myself, I found particularly interesting the chapter regarding Traditional Magical Elements. I believe it sets the book apart from just another “hand-guide to tarot”.
The introduction is very neat and organized, which makes it easy to get into the contents of the book itself. Starting with the evolution throughout history or simply where the cards come from is always good to provide the reader with a little context on how they showed up. Following that with the typical “how they work” makes it even better. It flows easily - you understand where they came from, to how they work, to what specificities each card has.
The main part of the book, in which we dive into the cards themselves is also very good. I love the way each card reads like a story and the reader can create this visual image on their mind of the situation that is represented by the drawing. The cards themselves - the images, in this case - are very thoughtfully chosen since it's the traditional depiction of the cards. It helps avoid misconceptions since more modern decks tend to alter a little bit of the traditional imagery and meaning.
I feel, however, that some key words should be listed by the end of the description on each card. When I began practicing, i felt it easier to learn the cards by associating them with certain words or expressions. This is just my personal preference, however, as I've grown with peers that think likewise and therefore have been taught that way.
Again, I must mention the chapter of Traditional Magical Elements. It surprised me - it's peculiar to find tarot books that have it - but I find it a great addition! Not only is it teaching about history and tradition but also providing a little bit of a “list” of things to have in your practice when you are a beginner. People who are starting out tend to need concrete information to avoid feeling lost or sad with their practice. I believe these directions and the mentions of these objects are helping to tackle this struggle. So 10/10 for this part! A really nice surprise.
Following right after, the Meditations, Spells and Rituals part which I find so rich and endearing. It's curious, it's well informed and most of all - it is vast and diverse. Everyone needs a little bit of everything, if not to try themselves, then at least to know how to do it should someone else ask for it.
A little note on the prologue and epilogue: the poems are beautiful and they are such a cozy touch to the book. Helps a person get into the mood, get curious, and then finalize the experience with a sense of satisfaction.
Overall it was a really nice book, not particularly long, well written and with a touch of mystic elements to it. It reads as very beginner friendly with a little bit of information valuable for intermediate practitioners as well. It contains both rituals for the wheel of the year (always nice to know) as well as meditations (which sometimes aren't talked about enough), besides all the good work on more general topics like love, money or even the third eye.
    Very good book overall.

With tarot becoming so popular, new books are popping up all the time. Tarot magic provides the reader with a nice summary of each card in the deck, followed by a section of tarot spells. the cards are nicely explained, and the magic portion is contains a range of spells. While a more experienced tarot practitioner might not fine much new here, it does make an excellent entry level book. It is well organized and very accessible.
Thank you, #NetGalley and Wellfleet Press for providing a copy for review.

This book is very short but it's one of the most informative books I've seen on tarot reading. It's very organized and starts with a history of tarot before going into a clear description of practice. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions are clear. There is clear explanation on how to use the cards in practice. There are also some rituals that can help center someone who wants to read the cards. If someone wanted one simple book as an introduction, this would be a great choice.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

I didn't love this book. Many of the card explanations conflicted with common interpretation, especially in describing the Major Arcana. I also found the writing overly wordy, which could be a bit confusing. I found the second half to be more interesting, particularly the suggestions for incorporating tarot into spell work. All in all, a pass for me.

I appreciate NetGalley and the publisher for providing a digital ARC. My honest review is my own opinion.

Tarot Magic by Fortuna Noir is the most engaging book on tarot I have ever read. Many tarot books can seem a bit like reading a textbook, and that's okay because there is a lot to learn. However, Tarot Magic is warm. It will capture your attention from page one. This book makes it easy to remember and understand the cards. Tarot Magic is Perfect for someone new to the cards.

  • Chanel

In regards to tarot meanings, it’s great for beginners but a bit too simple for more advanced readers.
However. This is more about using tarot cards and their energies in actual spell work. Which was interesting to see - but not something I am personally interested in.
But if combining magic and tarot is for you, then you might enjoy this.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Edelweiss+)

Decent beginner book. The majority covers all the cards and their meanings while the remaining third covers various other practices.

  • Jina

Sadly the majority of this book is dedicated to the meaning of each tarot card. So many books do this already - I was really hoping this was a book full of spells and rituals. Out of the 154 pages, only 40 of them contain what I was hoping for.

  • Angel

Quick impressions: Overall, this is a pretty good book. It is a very easy read. It may be mostly for beginners, but some of us at the mid level/intermediate level can find a new idea or two to try out.

After an overview of each card in the tarot deck, the book provides a variety of spells. In addition to the tarot deck other supplies such as candles, salt, or crystals may be needed.

  • Jody

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
As someone who has recently taken up Tarot, it's a great little book for beginners. I commented with the style of writing and hope it will help me in my practice.

  • Joana Silva

Uma leitura curiosa para os estudiosos de tarot que também se interessam por magia, mesmo para quem é iniciante

  • Belle

A lovely book with beautiful illustrations, the artwork is gorgeous. Making tarot into a ritual and simplifying it with one-card draws. Easy to follow and digest.

An interesting guide with creative ideas; however, I would've liked more in-depth exploration of the Tarot in places. Still, I like this series of books quite a bit.
