Hymns and Initiations (Thomas Taylor Series) Reviews
-
My review is of the edition printed by The Prometheus Trust.
This is, as far as I'm concerned, the definitive edition of Thomas Taylor's awe-inspiring Orphic Hymns.
Not only does it have the original 87 hymns, but they went a step further by including 18 additional hymns that had been published elsewhere in an article. There are also essays written by Thomas Taylor and extensive notes on translation and meanings. Furthermore, there are hymns by Proclus, Boethius and Emperor Julian, plus a nifty, simplified chart to the Theogony. So in total, there are well over a hundred beautiful hymns included as well as a crash course on the Gods's family tree per Hesiod.
The book is clothbound and the spine is gilded, making it look particularly lovely on a bookcase. Paper quality is superb, too, lending itself very well for being held and read aloud.
As for the hymns themselves, Taylor's translation is still my preferred and go-to when it comes to the Orphic Hymns.
