This book has me bumping up against my own “presentism” again and again. I’m amazed to learn that the term “people of color” is at least 200 years old, that women have traveled alone for so many generations, and that even African American scholars will create a list this way: “Africa, France, Russia.” This is an imperfect, but much-needed, anthology.
