How is a single dad supposed to navigate a new girlfriend into and out of his California king bed without his son or daughter noticing? For Trey Ellis, raising children while trying to find his way through the unfamiliar nuances of the contemporary dating scene as a single father has been a a sometimes nerve-racking challenge.

A Don Juan with a heart of gold, Ellis tracks both his sexy life as a swinging single father—his dates have included a model, a French actress, and even an Italian contessa—and his nurturing and loving relationship with his two young children. The result is Bedtime Stories, a charmingly poignant and hilarious story that shows what happens when the glamorous life of an LA singleton collides with the life of a less than glamorous dad who eats frozen dinners and changes dirty diapers.

Bedtime Stories: Adventures In the Land of Single-Fatherhood Reviews

Again, I'd like to give this 2.5 stars instead of just two because it is very readable. However, instead of a book being about learning to become a single dad in today's modern world, Ellis seems to want to show everyone what a great dad he is by spoiling his kids in between banging any and every sexy female he encounters. Throughout the memoir, the author is almost forty, yet has the emotional maturity of someone a third his age. I tired quickly of reading about how quickly he'd end up in bed with a woman, fantasizing about marrying her and having a happily-ever-after following just one date, but then left wondering where it all went pear-shaped. Many times I wanted to reach through the words and smack Ellis upside the head, but alas, it cannot be done. One can only hope he's moved past this stage in his life, if only for the well-being of his young kids.

I was surprised by how hard this book was to put down. And I'm not even a single dad.

I read this book many years ago (before 2011). It was enlightening in providing a rare glimpse into a male mind. It helped me understand the allusion when a reformed rake has a daughter and vows to protect her because he knows how men think. Ellis boldly reveals the thinking process...his love for his children, heartbreak from losing the love of his life, disconnectedness from losing a Mom, and ongoing search for new relationships most of which are sexual.

I read romance novels which to me seem to express how women want men to relate and transform emotionally. Ellis's memoir provides counterpoint that illustrates how a man actually loves and transforms emotionally. I'd recommend this book to any woman who wants to venture into and experience the perspective of a man.

To sum up this autobiography/memoir: Raising kiddos while attempting to balance work and sex... but not in that order. The book also has the unnerving and distasteful ability to eliminate the positive qualities of quotation marks. Utter grammatical bastardization.
