The Future of Art: A Manual (Sternberg Press) Reviews

The book comes with a DVD, which I watched first. To my disappointment, the book was merely a reiteration of the interviews in the film (instead of what I hoped for: two distinct but complimentary works). I found the film/book self-indulgent, as Niermann seems more interested in selling an extravagant, half-baked idea to his interviewees and to the audience than in thoroughly investigating the question, "what is the future of art?" (bravo to him, though, for thinking big). Some interesting dialogue manages to shine through at times, and the rare clips that actually focus on artworks are lovely. Sadly, "The Future of Art: A Manual" is the product of a missed opportunity.
