After an introductory page giving the readers the background on the Little Rock Nine, this book becomes a short graphic novel, detailing the struggles the Little Rock Nine went through to integrate into Little Rock Central High. This book was easy to read, engaging, and very informative.

  • Amy

Easily accessible version of the story of the Little Rock Nine for elementary students.

I read this book as my additional book for the informational text week.

The Little Rock Nine and the Fight for Equal Education is a blend of text and graphic novel to tell about the angry protests the Little Rock Nine had to endure in order to get an education. Jeffrey did a great job of providing background leading up to the actual event by introducing Jim Crow Laws and the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. The actually graphic novel piece was the story of the students actually trying to get in to school despite the National Guard turning them away at first and President Eisenhower stepping in to make sure that the students could attend school. Jeffrey ends with more text that let's the readers know what the results of the efforts of the Little Rock Nine turned out to be.

I think the text was clear and the pictures were wonderful - the beginning was very connected to the information text about the same topic with Elizabeth Eckford. I really enjoyed that it took a snapshot of the event to give the reader detail, but also gave an overview of the entire event as well. This "graphic history" would be appropriate for grades 4 through 8 and should be used along with other informational text related to the Civil Rights Movement or the Little Rock Nine more specifically.

Though too simplistic for what I was looking for, it is a good platform to introduce the students to the Little Rock Nine and have them launch their own research on to that or other Civil-Rights-related events.

  • LouAnne

Learned about desegregation and the events in 1957 when 9 black students were the first to attend an all white high school in Little Rock. This was an important to event in the history of the civil rights struggle.

  • Nancy

I cried reading this account of the Little Rock nine. Well done.
