I want to give this 1 star, but the art is nice and consistent with clean lines - but that’s about as nice as I can get.

I know this is a children’s graphic novel about the civil war, but damn - misinformation and misdirection abounds. Antietam was a Union victory? On paper only. In fact, before Gettysburg, the Confederacy looked like an unstoppable machine. This editing to be in favor of the USA really doesn’t tell a great story of how bloody and long the Civil War was.

And I’m not trying to be pro-CSA here. I think it’s wild that this book goes on to tell little anecdotes of how these traitors to the USA had LITTLE consequence and went on to live in society like NOTHING had happened. This romanticizing of the Confederate leaders really needs to stop. And I say this as a person who finds Sherman’s March to Sea and the subsequent demolition of Southern infrastructure as absolutely abhorrent.

One last gripe here - only one little mention of women in the war? We didn’t even get to be in illustrations. Not one black solider depicted in a picture? C’MON.

I can’t recommend this book to anyone.

Quick read. Could be helpful for a child essay on Civil War battles.

Another quick read, informative. Good for schools to have in their library.

This is a wonderfully done graphic history book. This great tapestry of eyewitness accounts interwoven with vibrant illustrations will help launch nonreaders into wanting to read more as they conduct their own personal research on the War that nearly tore our country asunder.
