The Poor Governess Reviews

The story of an impoverished but spirited and intelligent parson's daughter who "poses" as a governess to help her friend out of a bind. The friend is being sexually bullied by a frequent guest of the Duke she works for and does not know what to do. If she complains about it to the Duke, she will likely get fired, without a reference. If she is silent, the guest is going to figure out how to trap and rape her. So our heroine promptly packs her gun (lol) and sets out to hunt the hunter. In the midst of the intrigue, she manages to win over her charge (the Duke's somewhat difficult niece) and fall in love with the dashing Duke himself. She manages to get both her men: The would-be rapist gets a heart attack when she shoots him (but misses); And the Duke himself declares himself quite passionately and wins her hand in marriage.
This stood out among Barbara Cartland's identical books because the plucky heroine in this one has dreams of becoming a writer. There is a lot devoted to her using her imagination and her voracious reading experience to construct the plot, setting and characters of her book. It is quite endearing. Too bad she never got past chapter 3 of her book and it is rather uncertain if she will be able to have a writing career now that she is a Duchess!
I will remember this one for the cameo by the Prince of Wales and his mistress Daisy Brooke. They all dazzle the heroine with their Edwardian splendor. The Duke even mistakes the heroine for Mrs. Brooke when they run into each other in a dark corridor and he kisses heroine hungrily, thinking she is his mistress. Later, he tells the heroine the big whopper that he knew it was the heroine all along but having read a little bit about the "Marlborough House Set" and their lover-swapping shenanigans, I call BS :) -
I can read her books in one day they are so addicting and carry you effortlessly right to the end. This book was no different!

barbara cartland is my guilty pleasure... on the second thought, why do I have to feel guilty? well, I'm not :)

This book started on a good note a heroine who is not scared to take risks for her friends, ambitious, eager to write and publish a novel.
When she arrives as a governess in place of her friend at the Marquis house she is quite stunned at the grandeur and it’s richness, she slowly befriends her pupil and they get on very well but I felt there was hardly any indication of her falling in love with the Marquis or vice versa until they confess in the end, they hardly spent time with each other barring early morning horse rides. I would understand heroine falling Ivor with Marquis but he who has the best of women around him falling for a poor governess looked far fetching and unbelievable
The story started on a good not but then got boring and unreal -
