South of Sanity (Hannah Garvey Mystery, #2) Reviews

Broad humor got a trifle boring at times, and made it hard to switch to moment of romance or sadness. I could almost hear the gearshift go 'clunk'. Other than trying too hard and too long, a good read with a good plot.

I love love love these books. I laughed out loud many times WTG.

I noticed that other readers who reviewed this book liked it. I did not. I didn't read the first book in this series, so maybe that has something to do with why I couldn't get into it. I thought the author was very sketchy with details of previous events and characters that were in the first book. Sometimes having to rehash material from a former book is boring or annoying if you've read previous work. But in this case the author seems to make the assumption that every reader knows what she's talking about when referring to people or prior instances. I never was able to get a feel for the residents of the home the main character was running for senior citizens, nor was I able to see much difference between one character and another. And when it came to solving the murder mystery, even though the intent seemed to be for the seniors to be helpful and play a leading role, the event was not written in such a way as to validate that. I also thought the author had a tendency toward trying to be oh so clever. So much so that she practically mounted a flashing neon sign warning that a clever line or,passage is coming. Then there's the love interest part. At times that was endearing; at others it was terribly unrealistic. In my view this book was a very amateur attempt to try a series, hopefully with a long list of books under its belt. I think there are too many really good cozies out there for this one to stand much of a chance long term. I will not be reading the first book in an attempt to catch up on what I missed, nor will I be reading any further books. I was that disappointed in this one.

Second in the series about Hannah Garvey and the senior citizens at Valhalla Springs Retirement Community, this book is just as delightful as the first. But between her duties as manager and chasing down the seniors as they attempt to solve the latest murder, will Hannah and Sheriff David Hendrickson ever get past first base in their relationship?
