This book presents a concise, balanced overview of China’s oldest and most revered philosophy. In clear, straightforward language, Paul R. Goldin explores how Confucianism was conceived and molded by its earliest masters, discusses its main tenets, and considers its history and relevance for the modern world. Goldin guides readers through the philosophies of the three major classical Confucians—Confucius, Mencius, and Xunzi—as well as two short anonymous treatises, the “Great Learning” and the “Classic of Filial Piety.” He also discusses some of the main Neo-Confucian philosophers and outlines transformations Confucianism has undergone in the past century.

Confucianism (Ancient Philosophies) Reviews

Certainly not the easiest read. I found the labeling of this as an "introductory" text to be a bit of a misnomer. As an obviously well versed scholar in Confucianism, Goldin frequently talks over the head of the reader, referring to names of figures or texts which are otherwise never explained. This seems to warrant a need for some familiarity with the subject prior picking up this book. Despite it being a challenging introduction, I took away valuable fundamental insights into Confucian philosophy, and found the text to be cited meticulously.

Good background on the main branches of Confucian thought and a sense of of what Confucian scholars are talking about. I think this is a great place to start learning about the philosophy.
