Edward Weston: One Hundred Twenty-five Photographs Reviews

  • Fred Forbes

I have long been familiar with Weston's shots of peppers, shells and nudes. He shows a tremendous control of tonality in his prints and the textures he captures are often amazing. I was less familiar with his landscape work, both in the Southeastern U.S. and the western coast which are also interesting as well as some architectural and industrial work he did. The book works in his biography and contains his quotes regarding his major pictures and interests. The image of him dying at Wildcat Hill near Carmel will stay with me a long time - "Like he did so many mornings, Edward arose in the very early hours on New Year's Day, 1958. He sat in his chair facing the ocean, where he died quietly alone." His ashes were spread on his favorite spot at Point Lobos which California later renamed Weston Beach. A great book for any serious photographer and those who love art.
