Look Look Outside! Reviews

This is like the other black and white books but it has words! Improvement.

My son turns one month tomorrow and I LOVED this one. I like that it was the same picture on both sides but the colors were inverted because it helped his eyes focus a bit.

Sturdy board pages and crisp black and white graphics are appealing and eye-catching. Simple text. Not unreasonable price.

"Look Look Outside" by Peter Linenthal is a board book that infants and toddlers will love to both look at and read (the toddlers, not the infants) over and over. The drawings are works of art -- in the style of op art -- that are simple yet cleverly designed.

The book is done in black, white and green. The style is simple. Except for the front cover, the print is green and the drawings are black and white. But what great drawings they are.

Each page has simple text, and the sentences fill more than one page. Often, the black and white illustrations on facing pages are almost reverse images of each other.

Infants will love the black and white shapes and figures. Toddlers will love the simple words that go with the striking illustrations. Older children (three to five) will enjoy talking about the differences in the illustrations on the facing pages.

For example, two facing pages have the words, "Ladybugs fly." On the first page with the word "Ladybugs," the ladybug is black and white on a white background. On the second page with the word "fly," the ladybug is on a black background, and the lines and spots on the ladybug are the mirror image and reversed in color from the first page.

This picture book features bold, black and white illustrations, and a one word per page pattern. It featuers common things that might be seen outside, like birds, cars, et cetera. The pattern is a bit dull for an older reader, but my infant son seemed to enjoy it, and the word to text matches seem like they'd support early emergent readers. The bold illustrations seem suited to very young infants.

Again, the sequence of this one didn't make a ton of sense- it goes from nature, to the garden, to the playground, to cars, etc. I did like the start with the sun, then the rain comes out, and finally the sun returns. The illustrations are one of the best parts- this is one of the few with the bold black and white patters with clean lines that attract the youngest babies.

I was not a fan of this one. I didn't dig the black and white illustrations and simplistic art style. Even the words were too boring, too disconnected. The book seems to be imploring a baby to look around outside, but if outside looked like how its depicted in this book, I'd want to go back to bed.

Read for my Materials for Children class, Autumn 2015.

I held up the double page spread with illustrations of leaves and sang the song
    Leaves are falling all around
On the rooftops, on the ground.
Leaves are falling on my nose,
On my head and hands and toes.

ages birth-2. A great simple high contrast book with large letters that can help babies expand their print awareness. The items pictured can help children build their vocabularies.

I think I want to try turning this into a flannel board story

  • Sarah

Perfect for the under-20-month crowd. Just a few words per page, great images in high contrast, definitely full of things little ones learn early about the world outside.

Look, look outside is about looking outside for birds and the sun. The things you see outside are gardens, flowers, houses, playgrounds, leaves, trees, kids playing, grass, the sun, cars, ladybugs, rain clouds, turtles and flowers. I think he wrote the book to let us know to look look outside. He wants us to pause and take a look outside.
