Crochet Boutique: 30 Simple, Stylish Hats, Bags Accessories Reviews

  • Lauredhel

Good simple book for beginners/early intermediate. Mostly worsted/bulky yarn projects.

Crochet Boutique: 30 Simple, Stylish Hats, Bags & Accessories is a crochet pattern book featuring 30 on-trend (mostly) accessories designs by Rachael Oglesby, the proprietress of softspoken. The projects are made using easy-to-find yarns, which are mostly synthetic fibers and/or affordably priced. The book includes a beautiful layout, fashion photography (including many great outdoor shots), and simple patterns, which combine to make a book filled with funky and quick projects. Many of the designs use bulky yarns or simple pattern repeats to create projects which can be completed in less than 20 rounds/rows.

This is the type of book which is all about personal taste. While Rachael shares some great tips on gauge and blocking, ultimately this book is about the projects. If you are attracted to the projects, you will probably love this book as it is much more affordable than buying 30 e-patterns. Most of the projects are beginner friendly, so if you are a crochet newbie, these fashions are definitely within your reach. (Most of the projects are probably too simple for a more advanced crocheter, who might not need a pattern to make most of these items.) On the other hand, if the projects are not your style, then you would be better off with another book!

Ravelry members can view all 30 projects because the author was wise enough to upload pictures to her designer page. Check them out online or look through the book at the store and see if the projects are for you before buying.

(Full disclosure: I received a free review copy of this book from Lark Crafts.)

I've found a new favorite crochet pattern book in Crochet Boutique: 30 Simple, Stylish Hats, Bags & Accessories .
When I looked through this gorgeous book, I couldn't decide what project to make first. I've been in somewhat of a crocheting slump. I haven't picked picked up my hook and yarn in many months, this pattern book pulled me right out of that dry spell.

Crochet Boutique includes 30 patterns. The sections are Hats, Scarves & Cowls, Bags & Accessories and Home Decor.
There is a basic stitch guide as well for reference, every good pattern book has one. The patterns are clear and easy to read, the photos are beautiful. I love finding a crochet pattern book that not only includes nice, useful patterns, but also has vivid, eye catching photos.
I found all the patterns to be fun, trendy and chic.

I made the Infinity Circle Scarf first. The pattern was very simple and I worked this one up quickly. I just love the result. During the cool months I'm rarely out without a scarf or cowl, so this is perfect.
Next I made the Bonnie Beret, which is inspired by Bonnie & Clyde. Another quick and easy pattern with great results.

Designer Rachael Oglesby has done a fabulous job with this pattern book. I can see myself referring to Crochet Boutique time and again. Plenty of these designs would make nice gifts or spruce up anyones wardrobe.

Very accessible - good crochet book for beginners who already know the basic stitches. Also good as a "quick projects" book for a more experienced crocheter - even though simple, these projects LOOK sophisticated.

While the photography was stunning (and possibly the main appeal of this book), there was a lack of diagrams. Sometimes, the photos did not even show the full finished piece.

Includes a lot of hats and scarves, a few simple clothing items, and items for the home. Cowl people, this is your book.

Update: I have made 2 of these projects and it is quickly turning into my favorite crochet book ever! The directions are easy to understand but the finished pieces all look special and polished.

3.5 stars. As usual, I bought the book because one pattern caught my eye. While the book overall is a little too ... overdone .... for my taste (seriously, it's like they were going for high fashion photos), I might give about half of the patterns a shot. The other half are just, well, blegh, if you know what I'm going for. Seriously, the floppy sun hat looks terrible. But I'm psyched to try the one pattern I bought this for!

  • Alycia

Great projects for beginners to intermediate crocheters. Beautiful photos and easy to understand patterns.

Crochet for beginners, not boutique level. Mostly bulky yarn projects, super simple, not much happening here for any crocheter who is beyond basic skills. The patterns are lovely for a beginner.

  • Lori Anderson

This is one of those books where I feel I will make nearly every piece. I also love that the patterns use readily available (and affordable) yarn. Bravo, Lark Books!

  • Nikki

I love every pattern in this book and its easy to understand

  • Deanna

    I LOVE this book.

  • Francie

I love this book! It has so many beautiful patterns that I can’t wait to start making.

I've gone through a lot of crocheting books in the last little while in support of my brand new little hobby. My favourite one so far has been this one.

Each design is given a rating, whether beginning, intermediate or other. None of these patterns are at all difficult, which is great for me because I'm still a learner, and it taught me heaps. It has the standard couple of pages dedicated to different crocheting stitches, which is always good.

It also didn't try to sneak in knitting patterns. I've knitted for a number of years and have found it fairly uninspiring. So it really annoys me when I go for a crocheting book only to find half the pages are knitting patterns.

With clearly defined labels separating hats from bags, scarfs and other patterns, this book is easy to read and understand, and sure to have something that will appeal to all crocheters.

I mainly just look at crochet books for ideas so I cannot speak to the ease of pattern reading. I did, however, love the modern styles. It's difficult to find books featuring things I actually like making instead of something that looks like (forgive me for the insensitive cliche but) something grandma would give for Christmas. This has a lot of cute, chunky infinity scarf patterns. There are also a few hats, and even a little clutch and laptop bag that are stylish instead of corny. Really enjoyed the ideas within this book, wish there were more out there like it!

  • Stacy

Clear, easy to understand patterns...all of which I wanted to make, almost without exception. This curated book of projects has no yikes-patterns that make you cringe; they are all simple patterns that you can see yourself wearing/using in real life.

  • Felicia

I've made several projects from this book! This is the first book where I was able to successfully follow patterns without running into major problems and giving up. I think the projects in the book are all very cute and the directions are easy to follow.

  • Erica

These patterns are either really good or really bad. There are a few that I would like to try.

  • April Lashon

I absolutely love this book! The patterns don't make me feel like I'm suffering from Dyslexia!

  • Julia

Good for simple designs & easy projects, but the designs are not terribly sophisticated. Check it out before buying it.

  • Kathleen

    Cool projects.

  • Joshua Gage

A really fun, inspired book with some great projects. I bought this for the hat patterns (the berets are GORGEOUS) but have made some of the scarves as well. A really modern, solid crochet book.

  • Trish

There are some really cool projects in this book. I like the little hair bow.
