A TIME FOR WAR…
A casualty of the war between the demons and the vampires, Jase Kayrs has been missing for six long years. His older brothers want answers—but they’re going to have to get them from an unlikely source. For when Kane Kayrs tracks down Amber Freebird, what he finds is a blonde, vegan pacifist who has no intention of using her skills in his war…
A TIME FOR LOVE…
Amber enjoys her life of chaotic freedom and has no intention of falling in line just because a sexy-as-sin vampire insists on order. Unfortunately, he discovers she may be the only hope they have of finding his brother, and there’s no way he’s going to let her go—even if it means mating her to gain her cooperation. The two are as different as can be, yet when the dominant Kane and the untamed Amber finally unite to rescue Jase, they just may find that opposites really do attract…

“As a race, we’re rather protective of females. Sometimes too much so. My sisters-in-law would never be allowed to work alone in a bar—just for safety reasons.” He stiffened, catching his breath. Then he stood and whirled to face her. “Don’t ever tell them I used the word allow. God. Ever. Please.”-Kane
Rebecca Zanetti has done it again. This book was AMAZINGGGGG! I love this series so much. These books need to be read in order as they all tie together building on the plot and paranormal world. So this book picks up 4 years after Consumed. Jase has been kidnapped and tortured by the demon nation. Everyone is worried what 4 years with the demons will do to Jase if he lives. Kane Kayrs, the smart one, has located a demon destroyer named Amber. Only she doesn't know what she is, what he is, what demons are or how to use her powers.
“Not until you at least consider how good we could be.” “From a logical perspective, I can’t stand you. In fact, I’d probably kill you in your sleep.” She released his hair and shoved both hands against his hard chest. The damn man didn’t move. “Some pacifist.” “See? See what a few hours with you does to me? No way will I mate you.” “Famous last words, gorgeous.” -Kane and Amber
“Darlin’, I’m all brain, no heart. That should make you happy considering the pleasure centers are in the brain.” “No.” She shoved against his chest, the movement rubbing her suddenly aching sex against a hardened cock too impressive to easily ignore. “This isn’t about thinking. This is about feeling.” Staring him right in the eyes, she tried to penetrate to his hard brain. “We both know you can feel, whether you like that fact or not.”-Kane and Amber
Kane being the smartest man in the world, has plenty of book smarts, but emotions are useless to him. He is all cold logic and Mr. super intelligent scientist although his could kick ass with the best of them. He doesn't believe in feelings and love .
"What about love?" He sighed "Love is a chemical reaction induced in our brain to encourage propagating the species. The sensation is merely a scientific phenomenon, like the northern lights."-Amber and Kane
I loved watching Kane figure out his feelings for Amber. For such a smart man it took him a long time to figure it out. Kane was great in the other books but you didn't get to know a lot about him. It was so much fun getting to know Kane better, and watching him fall hard for a spirited, vegan, pacifist, and all around eco nut. Amber was a totally different type of heroine than I'm use to reading about. She was this vegan, pacifist that lived in a small commune that worked together and lived off the land. I didn't think I would like Amber. I thought she was going to get on my nerves with her hippy ways, but I loved Amber! She was strong in her own way and brave too, but still true to her character. Amber does believe in love and fate. She won't mate for logic. She wants passion, love, and feelings. It was so much fun watching her get the cold Kane feeling again!
“So, I mean, I’m not smart like you.” Man, did she need to draw him a map? His eyes crinkled when he smiled. “Amber—degrees have nothing to do with intelligence. They have to do with time to study. You’re plenty smart . . . don’t worry.” Warmth flushed through her. Kane didn’t lie—he didn’t know how. “Thanks.” He pressed the issue. “If you mated me, you’d have plenty of time and money to get all the degrees you wanted.” The warmth receded. “That sounds like a business arrangement.” “Most successful marriages, even among humans, are arranged. Good, solid, business arrangements.”-Amber and Kane
“I’ve wanted you to wear my mark since the first time I saw you in that bar.”-Kane
The chemistry between Kane and Amber was so sexy. They were total opposites in every way, but couldn't keep their hands off each other! Boy did they butt heads because Kane was in denial about his feelings for Amber. She pushed him to feel things, to get out of his head and live. She intrigued him and drove him crazy in equal measure. It was really funny at times. I loved Amber's grandma Hilde. Holy cow Hilde was one funny woman. Poor Jase my God my heart broke for poor Jase! Seeing what he lived through was eating a hole in my stomach and made me hate the demon nation so much. I hope the vampires send them all to hell in the most painful way especially Suri and his stupid whore sister Willa. In this book we get to see more of the Zane, Kalin, and Janie plot. I still don't understand why I like Kalin. He is so not a good guy. In every way he is evil and does the most horrid things and yet for some reason I want him to turn good, be redeemed, and get a hea. Just not with Janie she belongs with Zane! At the end of the book we not only get a HEA for Kane and Amber we get to check in on a few of our favorite couples from the past books and see how they are doing. The part with Talen and Cara was so cute. Love me some Talen! I love this book. A must read. This series is one of my all time favorites and I love Rebecca Zanetti! Great writer. I am a total fan girl for life!
“I love you, Kane. No matter what happens later, I need you to know that. I do love you.”-Amber
“Yes. I love you with everything I am and everything I’ll ever be.” She stilled. Her eyes widened. “You do?” He grinned. “Of course. You’re perfect. Stubborn, impossible, horribly devoted to a way of life I don’t understand. I’ll love you until the day I die.” Her heart swelled. “You don’t mean that.” “Yes, I do. Have I ever lied to you?” His eyes darkened. “No. But love, I mean . . . love.” “Yes, love.” He smiled, the curve of his lip happy.-Kane and Amber

The smartest vampire in the world meets the vegan, pacifist demon destroyer
“Provoked” focuses more on the Demon nation.
Since the previous book, Jase is held captive and is tortured by demons for more than 4 years. Kayrs brothers are doing everything in their power to get him back. Thus, the King is sending Kane to retrieve the only alive and available Demon Destroyer.
Amber may be a Demon Destroyer, but she is definitely not Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
She believes in world peace, in organic food and in the ban of plastic water bottles and leather couches. One of her favorite foods is tofu and her weapon of choice is a ballpoint pen. Her dream is that everybody in the Realm turns vegan.
But apparently she can fight demons with her mind and she can seal her mind from their attacks. And she did not know any of these facts because her sweet grandmother was keeping her in the dark.
When she meets Kane, she realizes that vampires exist. And witches. And demons. And shifters.
Kane is superanalyzing everything. Besides being a vampire, he is also a hardcore scientist. He has a few PhD diplomas in a drawer somewhere that they prove this information.
And he is also a closet empath, a reality that he hates.
“There’s nothing wrong with feeling things, Kane.”
Obviously, Kane does not believe in love at first sight, in the Kayrs’ marking, in fated mates and being in love in general as a matter of fact. Soon the reality will smack him on the face and he will realize that he does not know everything and that his brothers can explain a few things about love to him.
Was that what love felt like?
Love was supposed to be all silly flowers and dancing tulips.
Not a deep, gut-wrenching ball of pain.
Lovely couple Kane and Amber!
I have always liked the intellectual nerds/scientists, but who are also great warriors...
...And everyone thinks that they are bloodthirsty cold killers, but they have a sensitive soul well hidden!
You don't find those easily hahaha
My favorite book so far in the series! -
Each of the books in this series just keeps getting better. Of course, most times that is due to simply getting to know the characters more. However, I fell in love with Provoked because of the lighthearted banter and the fact that the hero and heroine are complete opposites.
Kane is determined to bring Amber, a demon destroyer, back to headquarters in an effort to rescue his brother. The problem is Amber doesn’t even realize that such a thing exists, much less that she is one. What follows is a fun and amusing journey as Kane comes to the realization that she’s completely clueless not only about your abilities but about the presence of vampire, demons and shifters.
Of course once she embraces that side of her nature things begin to heat up in the war between the Realm and the Demon and Kurjan species. Along the way Amber fights at being claimed by Kane. He simply wants to be able to share her abilities as all mated vampires are able to do. She refuses to mate for anything other than love. Kane is cool, calm and collected. He thinks about solutions and not with emotions. As you can tell, this can cause some problems between the two.
Told in dual POV, this is another strong alpha - strong heroine story with plenty of suspense, action, some mystery and lots of heat. I believe this could be read as a standalone and is completely safe. -
Re read- more 3rd person from H pov was needed. I wanted more understanding of H's feelings about h. I knew the emotions were there I wanted more insight. RZ does this a lot in her other books.
Kane & Amber's story
I really liked this. Good amount of action & romance. Book is told in 3rd person alternating between H/h & other characters.
Awesome badass alpha H who is not a push over for the h nor abusive towards her. He's dominant in bed. He's protective & possessive. Awesome between him & the h. The sex scenes were hot.
I really liked the h. She understood that there is no reasoning w/ evil. She defended her family. She wasn't a doormat or a snarky bitch.
Sometimes the writing was clunky.
I skipped scenes of H's brother Jase being tortured. He is an H in a later book which I liked a lot. -
4 1/2 "Opposites attract" Stars!
Loved it. I loved logical Kane and pacifist, fate and feelings believing Amber. Their story is very good. But what really held my attention and kept me on edge was Jase's situation. Jase had me worried about him the entire book. And also Janie/Zane/Kalin! Love triangles haven't been my thing in a long time, but their story has been building from the beginning and I CANNOT WAIT! I hope it is epic! Loving this series. Happy reading!! -
Kane & Amber's story:
Fun, fast paced PNR series. Great storyline, characters and suspense. Insta-love, mates for life, possessive Alphas and grotesque evil foes. There are Vampires, Shifters, witches, Demons and more. This is a continued storyline focusing on a different couple per book.
I really loved the first half of the this book. Amber wasn't aware that she is an "advanced" human and Kane thought she was just trying to hide it. Amber's reactions to Kane and thinking he was insane was very comical and made for an enjoyable read.
The second half of the book was still good, but it turned funny to serious and I was just so disappointed in Kane. He's one of those very, logical males who don't take stock in fate or love. I really was looking forward to seeing him get knocked on his ass by his mate, but that just didn't happen. He denied, denied, denied. I'm not a fan of that especially since it usually hurts the heroine when this happens.
Overall, still a really good book, just compared to the previous books I wasn't thrilled with how Kane handled himself in the second half and that brought down my star rating.

I am such a HUGE fan of the Dark Protectors series. From the very first book, Fated, this series has held me captive with the intelligent, entertaining writing and the interesting characters. I wait non-to-patiently for each new release. Provoked did so not disappoint!!!
With each new book, Rebecca has gifted my with the ability to return to this world. I continue to be immediately drawn in through great heroes and their heroines. And also, with stories that are filled with equal amounts of love and romance along with action and nail-biting moments. There is also laughter mixed in with a few tears.
I always look forward to reading about Dage and Emma, Talen and Cara, Max and Sarah, Conn and Moira, Jordan and Katie. And I can't wait to see what happens with Terran and Maggie and of course Jase. Oh, Jase......Rebecca is killing me with his story!! Hopefully she will guide Jase to his HEA. After all that he has been through, he definitely deserves it.
Rebecca has been teasing me with the whole Kalin/Janie/Zane story line and it was worse in this book. This trio has had me talking to my Kindle since they were first introduced!! lol I have been trying to figure out how they are going to affect each other and the building story. I just love how she writes them and how they continue to meet and interact with each other. Oh....the scene with Kalin and Jane and then the three of them in the epilogue....I cannot wait!! Zane is coming for her!!! Woo~Hoo!! lol
I have been waiting for Kane to meet his mate since I first read about him. He has always been one of my favorites and I just loved him paired with Amber. Total opposites but their relationship works~they were perfect for each other. I love how they met!! I was instantly pulled into their story and rooting for their HEA. I didn't want it to end. Oh...how could I forget their HOT sex scenes with an unexpected bossy ALPHA Kane!! lol ;) So good!!
Such a great story and another great addition to an already AWESOME series. Looking forward to the next book. Definitely a keeper!! 5 out of 5 rating.

Review-Provoked Summary
Amber is content with her quiet and sane life, living with her grandmother, and taking care of their land, and being pro earth. But when her grandmother gets injured in an accident, she finds a job as a waitress to pay for medical bills, and a man walks in and watches her for five long hours. Amber has no idea who this stranger is, gorgeous and quite a strong attraction, but she doesn’t know what his deal is, and is forced to kick him out at closing time. As she leaves for home, she gets kidnapped by two men that want to force her and her grandmother to sell their land and will do anything to make sure she cooperates. Through a turn of events she is being rescued.taken by her mysterious stranger, who drags her into a world of vampires, witches and demons and much more, her head is spinning, and when he tells her that she is the “destroyer of demons” she thinks he belongs in an asylum for the mentally insane. He must be crazy, because that could never be her. But Amber is about to face some truths about herself, that her grandmother kept from her, and dragged into a world of danger and passion she isn’t sure she is ready for but will do anything to protect those she loves…
The Hero
Our hero, Kane, is the logical and whiz of the Kayrs brothers. He has about a hundred degrees, and his favorite pastime is spending it in his lab and working on formulas to aid his people. But lately he has been on the hunt for his youngest, carefree brother Jace. A brother who is the most jovial of the bunch, has been held in captivity by the demons for four long years, and every time they find a clue to his location…they end up at a dead-end, but he knows the “destroyer of demons” is his last hope to finding his brother, and he will sacrifice anything for him. But he isn’t ready for the feelings that Amber evokes in him, he never thought himself capable of love, until he mates Amber and his world tilts on its axis and changes forever. What I loved about Kane is his logical brain…he is one smart geek here, loves his experiments and his lab, which he guards with his life. He is the least emotional of the brothers, and I enjoyed seeing him go a bit down under with emotions upon meeting Amber. Quite one of the highest highlights of the story was seeing Kane try to work everything out in a practical scientific way…but when it comes to love there is nothing practical about it.
The Heroine
Our heroine was quite fun and so far off kilter from what I was expecting…I have never met a heroine like her before. And I have read quite a bit, but she was such a unique character that added a bit more freshness to the book and the series as well. Amber is obsessed with saving the “earth”, she is pro green, save the environment, eat tofu and veggies…and hates meat, and refuses to be friends with anyone that has real leather or fur rugs in their homes. Despite all that (which I am all for the environment…but I do love my protein so I am not sure how well we would get along in real life) she was quite a hoot. Some of her actions are quite hilarious and crazy and I just loved her even more for her pranks especially (Spoiler: the scene where his lab gets a bit worked over by Amber…and boy does he get mad and what lovely payback too.
Plot and Story Line
Provoked is the fifth installment, and I was very impressed with this story. Of course I always know I will have a jolly good time with Rebecca Zanetti being the author. But this is such a wonderful paranormal series, and she creates a world of not just vampires, but witches and demons and her world building is quite astounding at times, as I have progressed in the series, you start to see certain pieces fall into place. We also see what Jace is going through with the demons, and oh my heart aches for this playful brother. I really loved seeing his strength and determination to survive but the demons are definitely putting him through hell, and it was difficult at times to read those scenes instead of skimming, but since his book is next, I knew I should read them,,,,but not easy be forewarned. But what was most fun was the romance that builds between Amber and Kane. Now Amber is all about love and flowers…she won’t mate Kane without his heart. Now Kane wants a mating and views it in a practical way…like a arranged marriage, where both parties get something in return. He refuses to let love in, but sometimes you don’t have a choice. I love the way we see that change in Kane, Another aspect that makes Provoked even better…is the action and adventure…and the search for Jace. It is the edge of your seat thrilling, and the pace is quite engaging. A must read for paranormal lovers….who love a good mix of danger and love.
The Cover
Not my favorite cover of the series…but oh boy look at those delicious abs, and I do adore the background setting, with the dark hues of orange and black….adds a hint of danger and supsense…makes me want to go on a walk through those woods with a sexy vampire of my own.
Overall View
Provoked is another fantastic installment that this author has created for us. A tale that has an edge of passion and danger, a story of fighting for those you love and never giving up on them…no matter how bleak the circumstances seem. A fast paced, thrilling romance….A PAGE TURNER TO EXCITE!! -
5 - His hold was unbreakable, his face unreadable, and his heart untouchable. Stars.
Kane Kayrs has been mysterious in the fact that Rebecca Zanetti, has not really given us much of an insight into him in the previous Dark Protectors books. The highly intelligent scientist is a bit of a loner, with a penchant for ordered Zen living conditions, who likes to hunt Werewolves in his spare time, other than that nada!
Hold on to your knicker elastic ladies, our elusive scientist is a hottie with an extremely capable ‘test-tube’ that he knows exactly how to use, for maximum satisfaction!
Amber is a free-spirited, clean living vegan... Basically Kane’s opposite in almost every way, and you know what they say about opposites!
Finally, he found home.
”Amber, I like you. Against all rational thought, I like the way you think, the way you move, even the way you feel everything too strongly. And I want to have one night with you – not to relieve some stress, although it would – not to cement your help, although it might - and not to further any of my rather pressing goals. I just want to get inside you and drive you crazy until you scream my name.”
I love this series, I love this author. -
Provoked (Dark Protectors, #5) by
Rebecca Zanetti
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Suspense
4.75 Stars
When I started this series I didn't have the highest of hopes.
The 1st one way better than okay, but not great.
Although the potential was there for a great series.
I am so glad I kept reading.
These have become one of my favorite series.
The characters & their world is intriguing & complex.
Ms. Zanetti has definitely taken this series up several levels with the improvements she has made to her writing. The quality level goes up with every book.
Kane & Amber are great characters. Their personalities are complete opposites. This leads to some very humorous dialog and action. It also leads to 'off-the-charts' action in the romance department.
Very steamy intimate scenes.
Speaking of action.....
The suspense and the action in the war is picking up.
Things that will make you gasp, break your heart, and keep you wrapped up in this series.
I definitely recommend this series to all my adult, paranormal, suspense loving friends. -
3.5 stars
I loved the beginning. Kane was awesomely funny and anal. Amber was funny and quirky but not annoying. Normally her vegan, leather hating, granola loving self would drive me batty, but I liked her.
So...why did I not live this one? Believe it or not, it was the sex. Kane got weird. It just did not work for me. Spanking her constantly to "teach" her to behave made me a bit ragey. She is NOT a child! I am ok with sexy spanking. But his was both discipline and sexy and OTT. Like all the time! It detracted from the story and the relationship because I kept getting angry with him.
Overall, it was a good story that could have been great. And if the spanking does not both you, I think you will love it. -
I was really nervous to read this one - a geeky, logical, brilliant scientist and a free-loving vegan hippie together. That wasn't going to work for me ... till I started the book and couldn't put it down. I absolutely LOVED both Kane and Amber. I thought Amber was going to be one of those heroines that irritated the shit out of me, she did anything but! I shouldn't have doubted that RZ could deliver such a fabulous story.
My favourite of the series and the best by far. That said I'm desperate but petrified for Jase's book, I'm thinking that is going to be a heartbreaking doozy. -
The beginning of this book was so hilarious. I laughed a lot. Then it turned serious and I loved the knew characters. But man, I hate the queen. She should understand and learn how to treat other people better. I hated how she acted in her first meeting with our heroine.
Talking about the heroine, I loved how she acted in the beginning but by the end of the book she was so childish that I wanted to slap her back to reality. Not only her but everybody else. The hero knew the heroine only for a month and everybody wanted him to trow away 300 plus years of logic out of the window and start yelling his love for them all to hear. C'mon. Let him take some time to understand and interpret his feelings. I truly disliked how everyone treated the situation and destroying something that big in the end was so childish that I couldn't see the hilarity everybody was feeling.
Anyway, one star deduced out of spite. But the author is doing much better with her couples. -
With the second reading (listening) of this series, I am enjoying this series more and more.
-
4.5 stars and my favourite of the series so far!
This is the fifth book in the Dark Protectors series and brings us the story of middle brother, and smartest man alive, Kane Kayrs. It’s been four years since the end of the last book. Kane is still trying to cure virus 27, the war with the demons, and the war with the Kurgens still rages on, and the Kayrs brothers are still trying to find and rescue their kidnapped younger brother, Jase.
Key to that search is demon destroyer, Amber Freebird. Kane is charged with tracking her down and bringing her back to base to help them. However when he finds her, he is stunned to find a young, feisty pacifist eco-warrior who has no idea about Kane’s world or who she really is.
Amber likes the look of Kane from the moment she sees him, however when he starts spouting off about demons and vampires, she thinks he’s crazy. But after he saves her from a brutal attack, she is faced with the evidence, and is immediately sucked into his world. She has no intention of fighting in a war or helping anybody else do so, but she wants to do what she can to help the enigmatic man… and then there is the fact that they can’t keep their hands off each other.Running both hands through her hair, he gently tugged her head back until her eyes met his. “Amber, I like you. Against all rational thought, I like the way you think, the way you move, even the way you feel everything too strongly. And I want to have one night with you— not to relieve some stress, although it would— not to cement your help, although it might— and not to further any of my rather pressing goals. I just want to get inside you and drive you crazy until you scream my name.”
I loved watching these two come together! Sensible, logical Kane becomes somebody completely different when he lets lose, and oh my damn, it’s HOT!!! But he is still driven by his intellect, so though he knows a mating between them would give them both the power they need to face the coming danger, he doesn’t actually believe in love and Amber refuses to progress things between them without it. It’s a battle of the wills as these two opposites face off, and it’s fantastically fun to watch! Amber’s quirky feistiness is a great contrast to Kane’s calm intelligence, but their chemistry is undeniable. He grabbed both her hands and flattened them against the blanket under his.
“Not that I mind wearing your marks, sweetheart, but a man does like to take his time.”
“I’m going to kill you.” She wrapped her legs around his hips, holding him in place. “Tomorrow.”
As always, there’s lots of other action going on with Kane’s brothers all a part of the action and we get to check in on each of the couples so far. There’s some Jase POV and his storyline had my heart pounding. And the Janie / Zane / Kalin story continues to develop, and OMG things are getting intense!!! I cannot WAIT for that book to see it all come together!
The ‘demon destroyer’ concept was interesting, and I really enjoyed the involvement of the demons as a race. They are a nasty bunch, and their powers and temperament make the world of the Realm more complex and exciting, and I love that! Rebecca Zanetti has created a fantastic paranormal world, and each book expands on that, developing it further yet bringing it all together at the same time (so don't even think of trying to read them as standalones!). These books are really well written, and I cannot get enough of them!
I loved this book! It’s a fantastic paranormal story with a complex but easily follow-able storyline, fantastic characters who constantly sass and banter with each other and lots of kickass action. I loved getting to know Kane better and watching Amber bring him to life. They were gorgeous together, and though the romance is a slow build, it’s definitely there!“I love you … no matter what happens later, I need you to know that. I do love you.”
I can’t wait to continue on!
4.5 stars.
-
Addictive series keeps me riveted. Ms. Zanetti is a drug for me. Instead of reading review books, I'm reading these books for pleasure. Full disclosure, I'm reading these out of order. It is best to read this series in order. But if you don't, it's still great.
IN this one, we learn about a demon destroyer who happens to be hiding... in a hippie commune! The main character this year is Kane Kayrs. I really like Kane. He's a scientist and in this one we see so much more. He's more than just a brainiac. His idea of what his mate should be is antiquated and oh so amusing. When he finds Amber, the demon destroyer, his life is turned upside down. Their interaction helps lighten the somber mood as the Kayrs brothers are desperate to find their brother Jase.
What I enjoy about this series is the camaraderie and brotherhood. These males are doing everything they can to protect the realm. And when they find a woman to be their mate, their priorities shift a bit. These poor women are clueless and then they are pulled into this crazy world of vampires, demons, shifters and faux vampires...
I like how the characters are developed. The men are similar in loyalty, protectiveness and ferocity. These alpha males need a strong female to shock them into the present. The interaction between the Amber and Kane is smoldering. They do a nice simmer that finally boils over into some sexy rough sex. This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who enjoy alpha males who find the woman that can match them. -
I just can't freaking wait for Janie and Zane's book!!! It's driving me crazy!

OMG I loved all the suspense surrounding Jase Kayrs!

Rebecca Zanetti is amazing author who has wrote another 5 star -excellent novel in her Dark Protectors Series. Since the series started with Fated (The Dark Protectors #1) it has caught my attention and am addicted. The story line continues and keeps getting better with her stubborn, over protected, over the top dominate, alpha male heroes.
Kane has always been the quiet brother that usually is either in the lab or out fighting the villains. To my surprise I fell in love with his character in Provoked. He does not do love, yes he loves his brothers, sister-in-laws, niece and nephew but he has never been in love. He does not believe in fate only knows logic. Until he meets Amber and everything his ever known has him all boggled and does not what to do.
Amber was a perfect match for Kane. Her character I adored. She thinks he is crazy when they first meet because she has no idea what she is and never new Vampires existed. In the beginning she puts poor Kane through so much. He is not used to being around humans only the ones he have known from his brothers. She has him chasing her and saying please.
The chemistry from the beginning with Amber and Kane was hot and the sexual tension was through the roof. But they do go through some ups and downs. He wants to mate with her for her powers so they can have a better chance at fighting the villains. But deep inside he is falling in love with her and just keeps telling himself he only wants to because of the powers. So many times I just wanted to knock him up side his head like his brothers wanted to do. Kane has never been a growler but Amber has him growling, being possessive, over protected and he can not keep his hands off her. Poor Amber will not mate with him because she believes in love and fate and wants the romance. Wow who would of guess how dominate Kane was in the bedroom. I for sure had some fan-my-self moments.
Fans of Janie, Zane and Kalin will not want to miss Provoked. I could not turn my kindle fast enough on their scenes. With each book we are getting more and more of them and in Provoked it has me wanting to have their own book. So many twist and turns that I did not see coming. I am actually at times hoping Kalin can redeemed himself. Janie still thinks he can be good. But I am a huge Zane fan who is still a mystery to me and I am loving Zane more and more with each book.
Poor Jase. It was hard to see him being tortured. Because of what is happening to Jase and watching his family go through the heartache of never knowing if they will ever rescue him had me shedding a few tears. There are a few intense scenes that had me on the edge of my seat.
Best Epilogue to date in The Dark Protectors series. I look forward to see where Rebecca Zanetti will take us in her next novel.

3.75 stars.
This book featured Kane Kayrs, the middle brother of the royal family. Kane was the logical, calm, rational, intellectual, scientist and most importantly, the King’s advisor. So when Kane encourage Dage to let the youngest brother Jase have more responsibilities, he didn’t anticipate Jase being captured by demons. In order to continue to function with the pain as well as the responsibility of finding a cure for the virus, Kane turned all emotion inward.
All that control he created was tested in a mighty way when he met Amber Freebird.
Amber was a barmaid, completely obvious to her connection to the supernatural world or that such a world even exists. So when Kane shows up to her bar, tells her that she is a “demon destroyer, she knew this one definitely flew over the cuckoo’s nest. Of course Kane uses his matter of fact tone to give her the facts and generously offers to mate in a business type arrangement. His proposition wasn’t appreciated as Amber wanted nothing to do with his offer or this “supernatural world”. But Jase’s life was at stake so Kane had to figure out how to get Amber on board as time was running out.
Expect fireworks as these two navigate their differing views on life, love and war. But one thing they both valued was family and loyalty. So that became a foundation upon which they began building a team to rescue Jase .
It was interesting getting a glimpse of Kane in the bedroom. He really is a control freak, in and out of bed. It is also going to be interesting to see Amber the vegan, living with vampires and sometimes shifters. I can’t wait till Jordan & Katie’s family come to town.
The most interesting development is that little Janie Belle has been holding out on her family. She has been making secret plans that she put into motion with both Zane and Kalin. Who will she end up with and how does she intend to end this war? Either way, the all-out war is on the horizon and I am looking forward to seeing how the Realm will survive.
Another great installment in the Dark Protector Series.

Provoked is book five in the Dark Protectors series and was a very unsatisfying read for me. I did not like Kane and Amber story at all. Their coupling felt forced and the whole plot was boring and predictable. Amber was a boring, hippy-dippy, self-righteous vegan who would justify partaking in material comfort when it suited her yet berating Kane and others for abusing the environment. Kane was so unemotional and detached that he came across as a robot. Amber’s horny old grandmother, Hilde, got on my last nerves, discouraging Amber from getting involved with a vampire while lying about her own mated/widow status and pursuit of getting the hot vampire, Oscar, into her bed. I was hoping her head would explode and she would go away.
What I liked about the story was seeing Janie all grown up and hoping that she ends up with Zane and not that psychopath Kalin. I liked Willa, the demoness; she was every bit as ambitious as her male counterparts and she was far more complex and intriguing than dull Amber or the conniving witches. I hope that Jase gets rescued but dismayed if he will be pared with Moria’s sister Brenna. I loved sisters Cara and Emma paired with the Karys brothers but another convenient sister (and a witch) paired with a Karys is a tired plot ploy, so I’ll likely skip Jases’ book. I’m also not interested in another long, second chance separation with Caleb and Lily...three hundred years is ridiculous. I am going straight to Marked to satisfy my anticipation of Zane and Janie. -
3.5 stars
Still enjoying and recommending the Dark Protectors series...just an observation on my part (why a 3.5 and not a 4): by this time in the series most of the Kayres brothers are mated and, along with their mates, most live in close proximity at headquarters. While the primary couple of each book is well developed, once relegated to secondary character status (in subsequent books) the secondary characters seem interchangeable--all of the female mates are smart, snarky, and sweet; and all of the males strong, protective, and indulgent when it comes to their mates. The secondary characters seem to have lost some of their individuality.
I love the teasers in each book that gradually tell the story of Janie, Zane, and Kalin...cannot wait to get to see Janie and Zane get together... -
My favorite one so far.

This was really good too! These books are definitely getting better than the first view and I'm totally here for it. I freakin loved logical Kane. I totally related to him in so many ways, and Amber was perfect for him! I loved the way they challenged and balanced each other. And I loved that Kane didn't have the over the top alpha (bordering on rapey) vibes of his brothers in the first three books.
But damn I felt bad for Jase :( Some of that was hard to read. CW for ppl who have trouble with excessive violence/torture. -
Kane Karys is known as the “smart” brother. Provoked is book #5 in the series and another great addition to the Dark Protectors. Kane Kayrs is the third brother and the scientist of the family who is sent to find and bring in the Demon Destroyer. Amber Freebird is the Demon Destroyer who has no knowledge that demons, vampires, shifters and witches exist. Kane know has to convince her to help them get Jase Kayrs back from the demons. My heart breaks for the youngest Kayrs brother. Poor Jase........ And Kane, you block head!!! Kane & Amber's story. I really liked this. Good amount of action & romance. Book is told in 3rd person alternating between H/h & other characters. Awesome badass alpha H who is not a push over for the h nor abusive towards her. So excited for Kane's story! Truthfully, I thought the beginning of this book was better than the end (how often does that happen?). But I enjoyed the character of Amber and I'm pretty picky when it comes to my PNR heroines. She was smart when she needed to be smart and naive when it was appropriate for her to be naive.
“What about love?”
He sighed “Love is a chemical reaction induced in our brain to encourage propagating the species. The sensation is merely a scientific phenomenon, like the northern lights.” -
Provoked (Dark Protectors) (Kindle Edition)
I felt let down with Kane and Amber's story!! Amber was a 25yr old Pacifist, Vegan living in a Commune, but at times she came across as a silly young girl. It would have been better to make her 20 or 21 yrs. old. I didn't like her destroying Kane's Lab where he was working so hard to find a cure to the virus 27, that wasn't funny to me!! Kane was a bit disappointing to; for him tolerating her dumb behavior. I couldn't believe that Oscar one of the Dage's senior warriors hit King Dage and not get put down, it didn't make sense you don't hit a King. The worst part of the book for me was my Beloved Jase. Page after Page of descriptive torture. Jase's torture was horrific and very descriptive, the story tipped over from Paranormal to Horror. Zanetti needs to be careful not to keep crossing this line. Their is a very thin line between Horror Suspense and Paranormal Romance and she crossed this line for me. I did like Amber's grandmother and her relationship with Oscar that was a good side story. Our Janie is all grown up and the who will she choose Zane or Kalin?? story still going strong Of course I want Zane. I hope when RZ gets to Jase's story he is mated to Brenna, I just love these two together. I wish RZ would give more victories in her stories to the Good Guys. The whole 4 yrs of torture of Jase was just to much. Why can't the good guys torture the bad guys for a change!! Lets capture Willa the Demon and torture her or her brother Suri. I hate reading brutality on women but Willa deserves it plus she a Demon. Overall the story was OK lots of action and very Hot Love scenes between Kane and Amber. -
Another great book from Rebecca.
My heart breaks for the youngest Kayrs brother. Poor Jase........

REVIEW:
AAAhhhhh Kane Kayrs. The smart brother, the brother with all the answers. The know it all brother. Well Kane just met his match in the form of a very feisty female. Amber knows nothing of the world that Kane lives in. And when she does find out all she wants to do is get away from this crazy, uber hot man who has a few screws loose. But Kane is not going to let Amber escape that easily. He needs her. She is the key to saving his brother and Kane will do anything to save Jase.
But with Amber, Kane is finally going to realize that he doesn’t know everything. Not everything can be learned in a book or in a manual or on the internet. Sometimes your heart knows more then your heart ever will.
I really enjoyed Kane & Amber’s story. There is so much going on. Not only do we see Kane & Amber’s story. But we learn a little about what has happened to Jase, and I am not sure if or how he will ever get better. We also get a glimpse into some kind of love triangle between Janie, Zane and Kalin that Janie is cooking up. I am very much looking forward to what Rebecca has in store for us next in the Dark Protector’s series

Polar opposites crash collision!!
Bam it's hot,
Bam it's funny,
Bam, you'll be begging for more.
Fast forward 4 years from book 4...
Kane is sent on a simple collect & return errand which throws Mr. Smarty pants for more loops than the Corkscrew at Cedar Point.
Amber Freebird is a hot-to-trot country pacifist with unknown secrets. Apparently everyone seems to know and has plans for her hidden talent-except her. Yesterday her biggest worry was, when was Granny going to come home from the hospital and preparing the commune for the winter months. Today? Running from demons & a dangerously attractive vampire.
Kane is so smart he may be stupid. The middle Kayr brother is ruled by logic & reason; and love is neither.
"Like the scientist he was, he'd discovered her every secret. And then some."
Will they figure things out before it's too late?
Hilda is an absolute stitch. Talk about a woman looking to make up lost time.
Jase. Oh Jase my heart is bleeding for you. I need to have your HEA in my greedy little hands now!
Thrilled we aren't missing out on the other brothers & their mates.
Janie Belle I do believe you are getting yourself in some major trouble. I sure hope you know what you are doing.
This series continues to get better & better. The Dark Protectors are in a close second for the running of my all time favorite sexy vamps.
