Nick and the Nasty Knight Reviews
-
I love medieval stories but this one seems communistic. The knight is dictatorial and Nick is a "liberator" of the common people. In short... Communism every which way. The illustrations are nice though.
-
A run-of-the-mill story of a knight gone nasty and forcing people in his kingdom to work for him for little or no compensation. Nick, an unfortunate young man forced to work for the nasty knight, one day decides to leave. He has to sneak out in the middle of the night. To avoid being caught by guards on duty Nick hides himself in what he thinks to be a closet. The room actually turns out to be the nasty knights treasure room. Nick steals the shiniest gold coin and escapes out a window. He travels as far as he can and then decides to sleep under a bush. He is found by a gang of robbers who force him to take them back to the treasure room. While they are ooohhhhing and ahhhhing over the treasure, Nick once again escapes and everyone chases after him out the window. As robbers, palace knights and boy struggle across the rope, the rope breaks and everyone hits the water. The coin that Nick was holding onto at the same time also hits the water, turning everyone into Crocodiles.

The story is okay. The illustrations are the style I really like in fairytale/medieval stories: fanciful without being overstimulating and caricatured character faces.
The premise of the story is full of possibilities. Unfortunately the author gets a little lost and turned around within those possibilities. Consequently, the story is unfocused and seems to switch plots halfway through. -
kinda long. I'm unclear why the kid keeps feeding the crocodiles at the end. kinda cute pictures.
-
A little inexplicable & random as a narrative, but it's nice to have a little bit longer story for experienced or older listeners.
-
I kept flipping back to see if I had missed something. What? Why? But I promise you this, if you have a naked behind in a picture book, you will definitely catch a kid reader's eye :/
-
50 months - nothing overly stellar or memorable about this one.
-
This book give a more realistic depiction of what life would have been like for a peasant and knight. It shows that knights were not necessarily glamorous heroes.
-
a recognizable story with a predictable ending -- but, remember, these are stories for children who don't have our repertoire. the illustrations are a delight, even if you find the story hackneyed.
