The Lesbian Erotic Dance: Butch, Femme, Androgyny, And Other Rhythms Reviews

This book is mostly about the author's obsession with the butch/femme thing. She has the mistaken belief that in a butch/femme relationship, the butch only gives sex and never receives it. Vice versa for the femme - she only receives it and never gives it. She recounted a situation where she, as a femme woman, was seeing another femme woman and they laughed because they couldn't figure out what to do with each other. Really, JoAnn??? Are you frigging kidding me now? Are you honestly saying you couldn't figure out how to make love to a woman, just based on what those other butch women did to you? Several years after this book was published (which was 1990), she began a relationship with a man, which is the ultimate butch/femme thing. I guess she got to lay back and receive without having to worry about reciprocating. In my eyes, she lost all credibility as a lesbian. You can't be a lesbian and be in a relationship with a man; at best it makes you bisexual.

A fascinating study at the intersection of lesbian and butch/femme/androgynous identities. One of my favorite books of all time.

Dated, bi and trans phobic perspectives.

It's an older book (1990) that talks about the dynamics of butch, femme, androgyny and other rythms...
