A group of survivors trapped in a bar must fight against the most abundant resource on the planet. A young woman survives a vicious bear attack while camping, but soon realizes the bear holds an uncanny resemblance to something from her dark past. Three sales reps driving home from a tool expo find themselves in a desperate battle for survival against a demonic entity—armed with nothing but a trunk full of malfunctioning power tools.

Negative Space 2: A Return to Survival Horror Reviews

This beautifully bleak anthology of survival horror includes several stories with science fiction elements.
My favorite stories included:
THE PLACES WHERE SUNFLOWERS GROW by J.W. Schnarr: A woman trapped inside a farm house with her abusive father finds comfort in painting.
THE BIRD IS THE WERD by Xariffa Suarez: A boy, who navigates a flooded, post-pandemic world with his grandfather and a parrot, seeks escape in a drug that recalls happier times.
MEAT by Kristin Kirby: When food grows scarce, survivors seek disturbing sources of protein.
SAP by S.R. Miller: On a camping trip with his friends, an addict must kill a creepy cryptid and fight a curious craving to survive.
BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR by Scotty Milder: Hoping to prank her philandering partner, a woman is forced to confront a dark secret. -
Negative Space 2: A Return to Survival Horror edited by Aric Sundquist is a collection of tales that will have you ready to pack up a go-bag, you know, just in case.
I had so much fun with these tales. I already can’t wait to see what the third addition to this series brings!
If survival horror is your jam, you need to check out Negative Space 1 and 2 immediately. There are so many amazing authors here that bring a variety of terrors to the table!

A great collection of short stories spanning everything from monsters, to supernatural horror, to apocalyptic survival, to existential nightmares.
A few that stood out to me included: The Bird is the Werd, an end of the world tale, uniquely told; Eight Glasses, a never-ending battle against an unbeatable foe; Meat, a different type of apocalypse tale, quietly told with the sad resolve of the down-trodden and hopeless; Monastery Blood Moon, a kick-ass, punk-rock bloodbath; and The Night Before Midnight, Off Arkansas Trail, a prequel to the story in the first Negative Space collection. It's as good as expected.
All of the stories are excellent and tie together nicely to remind us that people will fight tooth and nail, quite literally, to survive. I read the paperback version, which has a nice, thick cover and a font that's very easy to read. Plus, it looks great on my bookshelf! -
The apocalypse has never been so entertaining. I enjoyed these short stories, all of which carried themes of survival, horror, and apocalypse of some sort. And it’s the “of some sort” that makes the book entertaining. The diversity of settings, situations, characters, and time periods make this collection special. I really enjoyed “The Bird is the Werd” by Xariffa Suarez, the story of a young boy who is left to figure out survival after water overcomes the land. I also enjoyed “Brown Bear, Brown Bear” by Scotty Miller, the story of a young lady and her devoted childhood guardian. And also, “Eight Glasses” by Scott McClosley, another story where water gets revenge with devastating results. Honorable mentions go to “Sap,” “Meat,” and “Badlands.” All of the stories are well written, expertly edited, and thoroughly peace-shattering. Make this book one of your summer reads and I guarantee you’ll start thinking about how to protect humankind’s future.

This is overall a strong anthology with some outstanding horror shorts. My favourite was 'The Places Where Sunflowers Grow' by J.W. Schnarr. I'm obsessed with it. It's an absolutely slamming horror story.

Another great anthology from this press, containing one of my favourite EVER short stories - 'The Places Where Sunflowers Grow' by J.W. Schnarr. It's such a belter of a horror story, I'd really love to see this extended into a longer work. I'd be totally on board with a full novel of this concept!
