Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart for Life!: The Mayo Clinic Plan for Preventing and Conquering Heart Disease Reviews

    This book discusses almost everything pertaining to the human heart that you should know. Unlike many medical non-fiction books, which will scare readers with medical jargon, Mayo clinic took special care to ensure that everybody who reads this book will understand it.

    Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the USA. To reduce mortality, several preventive measures are discussed here. It will help you to control your cholesterol. Heart disease in women, the importance of diet control and exercise in case of heart health, and the importance of smoking cessation are all well portrayed in it.

    This book was published in 2012. As medical science is progressing at a faster pace, some of the topics discussed by mayo clinic here are outdated. I was not able to find any updated version of this book. Still, we can easily say that this book will be an excellent choice for knowing more about your heart.

    (As this book is an old edition and was published in 2012, I am sharing a few links that will help you to know more about the recent advances in the topics this book is trying to discuss.)

    This book is awesome. I took two heart health books out of the library and the other one gave me bad advice (countered by my pharmacist) and seems really out of date while this one is much better. The weird thing is they are both more than 10 years old which is a lot in health care. However this one doesn’t seem out of date and was easy to understand and follow.

    It’s a hardcover with glossy pages which is my favourite type of nonfiction. It’s laid out well and makes everything clear.

    The book starts with a get going chapter to help you see where your heart health is at right now and set some goals. The 10 Steps to Heart Health starts with the three steps you need to work on first. It doesn’t just set out the guidelines though, it explains them thoroughly including the why and how. Then it continues with the other 7 steps again explaining as it goes.

    The If You Have a Problem section goes over what to do and what you should know if you have Coronary Artery Disease, Heart Failure, Arrhythmias, Heart Valve Disorders, Vascular Disorders or Congenital Heart Disease. I was just diagnosed with Heart Failure and although I’ve done A LOT of research already on my own, I still found the chapter informative.

    Finally the How to Support the Plan section goes over common diagnostic tests, eating obstacles (with recipes!), finding a healthy weight, complementary and alternative medicine and monitoring your mental health.

    I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone interested in their heart health. It’s not just for those with heart disease.

    Excellent, easy read. But then, I'm weird in that I LOVE a good health, self-help, or cooking book. My elderly parent has heart damage/failure, so I was interested in knowing more about the heart and how it works. This book fills the bill and was pleasant to read as well.

    Non-fiction is my jam!

    The Mayo Clinic books are easy to read with easy to understand information. This is no exception. The chapters outline key steps to work on in easy terms such as Eat 5 (fruits/veggies), Move 10 (minutes), Sleep 8 (hours). All medical information is kept to the basics and put in laymen's terms. There are diagrams of the heart system included to help understand anatomy, too. The chapters are laid out in such a way that you can skip parts that do not interest you or pertain to you, such as smoking. They make it seem very easy to be very healthy. -Gloria

    The Mayo Clinic polishes its reputation for reliability by offering a readable prescription for those interested in dealing with present or future heart problems. The book does so by:
    Being up to date with the science and psychology of heart issues including stress and sleeplessness;
    Being well organized and targeted on recommendations;
    Being written in a straightforward, non-jargon manner;
    Offering a resource for alternative medical approaches;
    Boiling down positive steps into increments that those who have difficulties with changing their lifestyle might be willing to attempt; and,
    Keeping the whole effort in a package that is easy to pick up for reference or new ideas.

    Good, basic information on the prevention and treatment of heart disease. Does not go into a great deal of depth on any one subject, but is more of an overview on many heart-related issues. Information is presented in clear, layman's terminology so is easy to understand.

    I would recommend this book to anyone looking for basic, up-to-date information on heart disease and heart health.
