"What would you get if you took a journal writing competition added the twists and turns of reality television and put it on a roller coaster with iffy brakes?" Thus says the community profile of a writing contest like no other. Idol Meanderings, the follow up volume to Idol Musings, brings together essays, short stories and real life tales on subjects as diverse as bikini waxing, murder trials, superheroes, life with a disability and the end of the world. There's something here for everyone, each entry as individual as the author behind it, all coming together to create a book as diverse as the competition which inspired it. Idol Meanderings: a mesmerising anthology that will leave you wanting more.

Idol Meanderings (The Real LJ Idol, #2) Reviews

First, the disclaimer. As an author with a piece included in the book, a former competitor of
LJ Idol, I naturally have my own biases. A lot of my favourite pieces I wish to specifically mention were pieces that were favourites, or that I recommended, back when I was in the competition. Three of my listed influences on my profile are friends I met through the competition, as are a number others (though not all) I recommend in this review. On the other hand, since I am familiar with the writing of so many in the book, I have other favourite pieces of theirs which were not included, which, at times, meant I decided not to draw attention to the pieces which are.

My favourite pieces, in the order they appear in the book, are:

I suppose 30 favourites amongst 23 writers might seem like a lot, but consider that there are 47 writers in the book, contributing a total of 109 pieces. Much like the game, there are pieces that I did not enjoy nearly as much as others, but the good thing about that is that it gives a lot of variety to the reader, such that everyone reading the book is bound to find something they connect with, even if it is not everything.

My hope is that those who pick up a copy of the book because they happen to be friends with one of the writers, also read the rest of the pieces in the book. If they don't, they are missing out, because they might later find they have missed discovering a new writer they love. A new writer that they could encourage to write more. There are many in this book that I would love to read a full-length novel from. In one case, I have... hopefully one day it will be published, so that I can recommend more people read it.

My favourite pieces will not necessarily be your favourite pieces. Please give everything in the book a chance. And I'm not just saying this because I want people to read my humorous fiction piece, Inside Baseball ;)
