"Utterly delightful" is how Zora Neal Hurston described this classic book when it was first published in 1946. Long out of print, Lorenz Graham's beautiful collection of Bible stories, told in the idiom of West Africa, is available again in an expanded edition newly illustrated by Ashley Bryan.

My main problem with this book is that the stories were not in chronological order. So the story about Cain and Abel came after the story about Jonah. The story of the Exodus came before the story of Joseph in Egypt, etc. The book would have been much better if the chapters had been ordered chronologically.
The language is English, but in the idiom of West Africa, so that it is sometimes difficult to understand, but the introduction at the beginning helps with unfamiliar vocabulary.
The black and white woodblock illustrations are strong and emotive.

These poems are biblical stories told in the vernacular and dialect of an African child talking with another. A poignant reminder that the Bible is for the world, not just Americans. We read one story/poem each day during Morning Time.
