Sonic Genesis Reviews

This is my little girl Jess' own review (with some input from Mom on spelling and grammar). Jess is 9.
Hi again everyone! Jess here. This time, I'm reviewing a comic about my most favorite character, Sonic the Hedgehog! I've been addicted to this character for the past 2 or 3 years. And by the way, I am not the kind of girl that would like girly stuff. I am a tomboy. Ok, that's enough about me, now about the comic. The characters in this comic are Sonic, Sally, Rotor, Antoine, and Dr. Eggman. In this comic, Sonic did what he usually did, smashing robots! But this time, he found something mysterious...it was some sort of a prison capsule. When Sonic broke the capsule, 3 mysterious animals came out...Sally, Rotor, and Antoine! After some introducing, Sonic decided to join them. Next they went to the Marble Zone, where they found Eggman and defeated him quite easily.
Well, that's my review. I hope you find it good and please like! -
The thing is, the main throwback/alternate-universe/memory-loss storyline just feels like a detour from a larger storyline, of which we're seeing the middle chapters. I mean, it's a very well-done detour; Flynn is excellent at character and dialogue, both Spaziante and Yardley are good, clean, appealing artists, and there are a bunch of neat early-game/'90s cartoon jokes. But it's not, in and of itself, a satisfying story.

As no great surprise, this comic is pretty boring and nonsensical. Mostly nostalgic action - and it truly was - and wise cracking from Sonic. Not a lot of plot points that made sense or could be figured out.
Throw in a lot of classic stuff and people will praise it. Shoehorn in the Chaos Emeralds.
Also disturbingly sexy rendition of Sally from one of the pencilers.
I really wanted it to not be shit, but it is.
2⭐ for nice drawings, perspectives and nostalgia. -
Despite my steadfast allegiance to Nintendo as a kid, the blue blur always found his way into my gaming rotation. And through that, my childhood was also complimented by his titular comic series. With the Guinness World Record for longest running video-game comic in history (~30 years), there is a LOT to read; but this compilation covers a unique arch in the run known as Genesis (issues 226-229).
Genesis nicely bookends the story with a setup prologue and a solid wrap-up. In the middle though, is what I fell in love with. It's an alternate reality that re-enacts the first game. It's awesome! Starting off in Green Hill Zone, Sonic thwarts the Motobugs and Newtrons that stand in his way, finally takes down Egg Mobile-H and frees the animals from their capsule prison. Sound familiar? Thought so! How about lava-hopping and Caterkiller-dodging in Marble Zone? Yep, that's there too. Slip n' sliding through the ruins of Labyrinth Zone? You bet! All of these iconic moments from the game, beautifully reimagined in comic-book format. And what happens when we get to the end of the game's zones? Emerald Hill Zone from Sonic 2! Then Chemical Plant Zone. Then Oil Ocean Zone. It just doesn't end!
What blew me away even more, was the detail in the artwork. Every page is rife with fan service and continuity from the game. Even the runic symbols that you see lining the background in the 16-bit title were redrawn true-to-form throughout the pages of the book. Sprinkle in characters from the original SatAM cartoon to add depth to the story, and you've got one hell of a run!
Keeping in mind that it's just a compilation of already-released comic books, if you're a fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, this is a FANTASTIC addition to any collection. It's "WAY PAST COOL!"

A fun story and an interesting take on Sonic the Hedgehog. Having never read any Sonic comics previously, I feel some elements were lost on me. But I was able to catch up to speed and the story filled in gaps where appropriate. A good one of story and worth a look for sonic fans.

I’ve always liked the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, but I’ve never really collected them. The Archie Comics have done a good job of incorporating every part of Sonic’s history, from the Sega games spanning several consoles to the four animated series’. The Sonic: Genesis graphic novel is a compilation of issues #226-229 of Archie Comics’ Sonic the Hedgehog series, or the “Genesis” story arc.
And that’s that, really. I’ve personally never really read very much of the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, but the team has done an admirable job of including as much story from as many different sources as possible, and they created this plot arc to celebrate the release of Sonic’s 20th Anniversary title, Sonic Generations. The story was interesting enough, but not an amazing read, it was pretty much what I would expect from a comic book, with enough engaging action to make you want to read the next issue. I may have been a little less interested because I haven’t read all of the events that led up to this point, but altogether it was a cute story that left me mildly interested in what may happen next, but not exactly salivating for more. The art, however, is beautifully done, and the bonus features section contains concept art from the original issues themselves, as well alternate covers, black-and-white sketches, storyboards, concept art, and a message from the writer.
Altogether it’s definitely worth it for a fan of the Sonic comics, and even if you don’t read the comics, it’s a good buy for the fifteen dollar price tag and a worthy addition to a Sonic fan’s collection. -
