Davy Crockett Saves the World Reviews

This was an interesting take on Davy Crockett that I haven't seen. This book is about Halley's Comet coming towards the Earth and the president needs to stop it so he calls for Davy Crockett. This book's illustrations are very charming.

  • Anthony

A far-fetched and extremely tall tale about Davy Crockett, and how he saved the world from being destroyed by Halley's comet, and why he wears a coonskin cap.

My son loves this story. Of course, Davy Crockett is his favorite person from history right now, so that doesn't hurt. This is a great read for a kid that loves tall tales.

The story does contain a few facts about Davy Crockett, especially in the brief intro. It's not a historic tall tale, but written with the feel of a traditional tall tale. It's completely beleiveable that this could be a piece of folklore to go along with the rest about Davy's life. It's easy to fall into the story tellin' voice for this here story because of how it's wrote. It isn't the most grammatically correct, but it makes it easy to picture some wagon leader for a wagon train headed west telling the tale to everyone around the canpfire at night over dinner. It definitely helps bring the tines to life.

What I love most about this story is the way a child can get a feel for times before television and radio. It may not be the same as sitting around a fire, listening to an entire inflated history blown up in epuc proportions, but it's a good starting point for sure!

I read this book for my block 1 read aloud. This book transitioned very easy into the classroom environment because in social studies they were already talking about the time period Davy Crockett lived and had just discussed words that helped describe Davy such as "frontiersman". I was also able to tie it into their discussion of Indian removal because as a statesman, Crockett opposed it. The kids liked this book because it was fun to see the legend behind the man. I wish this book included more of the real story about Crockett because if I had not looked up extra information about the real Davy Crockett ahead of time, I think the kids would have been confused.

Discovered that Crockett's Almanacs are believed to be the first comic books, such as this one:

This book is a wild folktale involving Davy Crockett and his adventure to save the world from Halley's comet. The story is fantastical and the illustrations are outrageously funny. Our girls loved that he was taking dancing lessons from a bear! It's a great story to read aloud to older children.

  • Katie Curry

This book gives a fictional story about Davy Crockett saving America from being destroyed by Halley's Comet. I would use this book in my classroom to introduce a history lesson concerning these topics.
