Mrs Armitage sets off for a quiet cycle with her faithful dog, Breakspear, but she just can't help thinking of ways to improve her bicycle. Before very long she has added three very loud horns, a bucket of water to wash her hands, a complete tool kit. And by the time she has also added a seat for Breakspear, two umbrellas, a cassette player and a mouth-organ, Mrs Armitage is riding a very eye-catching contraption. But it is when she finally adds the mast and sail, that Mrs Armitage really runs into trouble . . .
"Blake is beyond brilliant . . . I've never met a child who doesn't love Quentin Blake" - Daily Telegraph

This picture book was requested again and again when my children were small. Mrs Armitage goes for a bike ride with her very cute dog, Breakspear. She finds ways to make additions to her bike, a dog seat, a mouth organ, some umbrellas, a sail.... until it goes wrong. A fun read with lots of details to look at in the illustrations.
Read on open library. -
A funny book about Mrs Armitage's bicycle. She thinks of new ways to improve the bike until one day it's all too much and it falls apart. Great for kids just learning to riding their bikes independently.

The illustrations in this book reminds me of Roald Dahl books. . . quite similar! -
This was my Reception class children's favourite book for a couple of months. They loved the repetition of "what this bicycle needs" and the noises of the horns. We tried customising a scooter in the playground to see what would happen (it fell over, but nobody was on it), and they enjoyed recording advice to Mrs Armitage on bike customisation. Lovely.

This is such a wonderful picture book! The illustrations grow in complexity as the the story develops which really suits Quentin Blake's style. Blake's enjoyment in drawing is highly contagious and you feel that with every detail. Mrs Armitage is a smashing role model for any child. Essential reading for children and adults alike.

Mrs Armitage is a character full of bright ideas about how to improve her bike. On her journey, she encounters various difficulties involving her bike so she goes above and beyond to make her bike bigger and better than before. However...she does end up going a bit too far in the end.
This story is a great one to read with children because it is a text which explores many aspects of grammar such as speech, tense and different sentence structures. Therefore, it could be used as a hook or context for further learning to take place.
It is also be used across the curriculum. For example, in Design and Technology it could be used as a hook for a lesson where children would be exploring functional design choices.
As well as all the above, Quentin Blake is a wonderful author who provides many hidden details within the illustrations.
Overall, a great text that would be great in the classroom. -
Mrs Armitage was out on her bicycle.
Breakspear the dog ran alongside.
A hedgehog walked across the road.
Tring! Tring! Went Mrs Armitage on the bell.
Another of today's finds and another addition to our growing
Quentin Blake collection.
I do like these Mrs Armitage children's books. They are suitably silly and a lot of fun. I am also sensing a theme! Mrs Armitage is a bit of a disaster, always trying to improve things until it overwhelms or collapses.
Here she sets out on an sunny afternoon's cycle but soon realises the bike needs some of her unique modifications to make things 'better'! But all does not go to plan!
A solid 3 1/2 stars. -

Of course a book such as this would grasp the whole of my attention! Mrs. Armitage is one of those unconventional main characters that makes you immediately very fond of her. She is an odd tall figure, not too young, not too old, with pointy nose and glasses. Independent, full of spirit, the adventurous Mrs. Armitage cycles through this book with tons of imagination, lots of strange inventions and a very nice white dog for a companion. Quentin Blake does a wonderful job drawing and writing this story. Absolutely one of my favorites.

humorous....reminds me of the same concept as If you give a mouse a cookie....there is always something more needed to make it perfect. In the case of Mrs. Armitage, she needs just one more thing to make her bike ride perfect.
She starts on a simple ride with a simple bike with one little bell. Her dog is running beside her. -
That Mrs. Armitage is certainly one inventive lady!
-
I remember this book from my childhood. Found it recently and will be reading to my daughter. Great storyline with nice repeats to grab children.
-
Classic Blake drawings and a jolly good fun story. We loved this.
-
A brilliant little story by Quentin Blake - he obviously learnt a lot from Roald Dahl. My 8-month old found the horns and crash hilarious!
-
Mrs. Armitage and her dog steal my heart. Every time.
-
Breakspear! is in our daily usage now. We just love Mrs Armitage
-
Funny and well illustrated, it kept my daughter's interest and she read it herself over and over again. Five stars from a five year old.
