The terrifying details of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake jump off the page! The most terrifying events in history are brought vividly to life in this new fictional series! In I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake, 1906 (I Survived, #5) by Lauren Tarshis, Ten-year-old Leo loves being a newsboy in San Francisco -- not only does he get to make some money to help his family, he's free to explore the amazing, hilly city as it changes and grows with the new century. Lauren Tarshis brings history's most exciting and terrifying events to life in this new fictional series. This reminds me of a "We Were There..." series I read as a kid. Readers will be transported by stories of amazing kids and how they survived! -
This one was just okay for me.
Not bad, just not great *shrugs*
I did love the characters and there were some great moments in here that I loved and had me smiling/raging but the landscape/setting didn't jump out at me like with the previous installments I read. This time, it was more the people and circumstances.. if that makes sense.
Narrator: Jennifer Bronstein - four stars
3.25 stars overall for this one -
I just finished reading "I Survived: The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906" by Lauren Tarshis. This book is about a boy named Leo, and his friends Morris, Wilkie, and Fletch. Leo and his friends have a normal day in San Francisco until a horrific earthquake happens and destroys buildings and sets off many fires. I gave this book 4 stars because it was very interesting but was boring at times. This book is historical fiction. I would recommend this book to all 6th graders because it is very interesting and short. I enjoyed reading "I Survived: The San Francisco Earthquake, 1906".

My almost 8 year old son and I took turns reading this out loud to each other and we both really enjoyed it.
The I Survived series are a fun historical fiction set that provide details about the event/tragedy told through the story of a child who survived the event. The story was entertaining and I learned about this tragedy that I had not really known about before we got this book. -
Great historical fiction novel about the San Francisco earthquake. The plot moved along quickly. I enjoyed how the author weaved in flashbacks (memory moments) to help develop the characters and move along the plot.

My younger kids love these. A little fiction and a history lesson. (Today was Audio)

it was epic

Historical fiction with many facts

So the story is about this kid named Leo. Leo wants to be like his grandfather, his grandfather was clever, resourceful, and strong. The story takes place in San Francisco in 1906. Leo gets introduced and his gold nugget gets introduced. So the bullies Fletch and Wilkie take his golden nugget and Leo says that he never told anyone except a skinny little kid named Morris. Morris and Leo make a plan about how to take Leo's golden nugget back. I liked the plot, setting and characters in the story. I would recommend this book to kids in grade 5-7.

More about a gold nugget than an earthquake
The title is about an earthquake. I am working with a group of 9 year olds reading this and they wondered why there weren’t more facts about earthquakes in the story. Instead the story focused more on a gold nugget that is stolen, found and sold. If I wanted to know more about the gold rush, I would have picked a book about the gold rush. Very disappointed. -
I like this book. There is hardly any lack of detail. I feel bad for Leo and what he went through. The San Andreas was a crazy earthquake, and I would hate to be there when it happened. I still think that the book had almost no lack of detail, but then again, ALMOST.

10 year old Leo is a newspaper boy in San Francisco he also needs money. i really liked it it had a good story line . i would recommend it for people who like Acton books.

Even though this series is aimed at younger readers, I'm enjoying it as well. Some of them have had too much filler, but this was more what it should have been. We had a core group of characters and we had the Earthquake happening around them. There's two basically orphan boys and two basically orphan bullies, but the Earthquake makes them see each other differently.
Overall a strong volume in a surprisingly good series. If you have kids that like to read and you think they would like this series, they probably will. -
I had never read any of the I Survived series, although I know that they're really popular with the kiddos at school. Meh. Neither Charlie nor I were impressed. I get that there's a need for simple chapter books to ease some kids into reading, and that it's tricky finding topics that different kids will enjoy, and I'm happy that these fill a niche for some of those kiddos, but I think Charlie and I are not the intended audience.

I understand that this is really low middle grade, so she probably wanted to keep it short and not freak kids out with too much destruction, but I definitely would have liked more of the "surviving" part of the story.
-
Historical fiction. Facts are true and all the places in the book are real -- only the characters are not.
-
this was good but the earthquake goes by fast which is very anticlimactic

Olivia read on her own and rated 4 stars.

"That was a sad story." -Cadee, age 9

Read this with one of my young readers and having lived in SF for 25 years and always been fascinated with its gold rush history and its long ongoing relationships with earthquakes, it was fun to read this along with a child of the city who did not know much about the epic historical earthquake of 1906 which decimated the city. People often do not know that what levelled the city back then was not the earthquake itself which was a 7.9 magnitude earthquake the fires that ensued for four days. The water mains all broke in the earthquake and so the citizens of SF could do little but stand and watch the city burn before their eyes.
This is a work of historical fiction like all "I Survived" books are but are a great introduction and short summary around a historical event. -
Leo got his gold stolen
