The Mummy Case (Voice of the Nile #1) Reviews

This was a fun read. Bear with me while I free-associate: this had a slightly over-the-top, mystery plus supernatural vibe, kind of like watching Remington Steele, or like being twelve and thinking you'll marry a detective and travel the world solving crimes. And also you'll have a magic necklace! Because that is totally a thing that happens when you get married: your husband gives you a magic necklace and you can hear the ghost-- sorry, the ba--of an Egyptian mummy.

So it's a little bit of a "turn your brain off and just enjoy" book, but it's very well-written, and I am hooked. And LUCKILY I bought both this book and "The Mummy Beads" at the same time, because while the heroine and hero are sort of "together" by the end, the book actually ends with THE HERO'S PLANE CRASHING. He sneaks away in the middle of the night, and the heroine wakes up not knowing where he is, and a cop comes to the door to tell her HE'S DEAD. Obviously he isn't dead, since there's a whole second book where she goes in search of him, but it was still a bit startling in a category romance. I don't think I've ever read a Harlequin with such an ambiguous-for-now ending.

I read this years ago but didn't realize at the time that it was a duet and had a cliff-hanger ending, so I was left bereft. So being in an Egyptology kick lately, and now having the concluding book, I decided to give it a go while waiting for the third Amelia Peabody mystery to come in at the library (which is coincidentally called The Mummy Case).

While The Mummy Case as a whole is highly improbable, it has a certain charm and was a cute read. Even though it is a Harlequin book, I liked that it dealt less with the romance and more with the mystery, probably because it is part of a duo. I've read Dawn Stewardson books before and have been impressed with how well she can develop the plot and characters in so few pages. I look forward to reading the completion the Voice of the Nile. ;P

    AUTHOR: STEWARDSON, Dawn
    TITLE: The Mummy Case
    DATE READ: 10/27/10
    RATING: 4/B
    GENRE/PUB DATE/PUBLISHER/# OF PGS: Romantic Suspense/Harlequin Intrigue/1994/244
SERIES/STAND ALONE: #1 of 2 Voice of the Nile
    TIME/PLACE: 1990's San Francisco
CHARACTERS: Marina/insurance investigator; Revington York/owner of transport company needing special care
FIRST LINES: Whatever I expected when Charlie Obregon ordered me into his office Monday morning, it sure wasn't his saying, "Marina, Nat Fishbein had a heart attack over the weekend. He's in San Fransisco General."
COMMENTS: Pleasant read, nice touch of mystery & romance. Marina is on her own for the 1st time on an investigation. A special Egyptian exhibit opens in the Donner museum in SF featuring a mummy of an ancient princess...however, some has stolen the princess & replaced her w/ someone else.

I was surprised that I liked this book so much and was glad to see it was a 2 part book. I was lucky enough to find the second one on eBay. I would recomend this book for sure!
