this book was fine up until part two. honestly, it should have ended at page 64. part one is all about mythology and historical, religious, and cultural manifestations of death, various forms of anthropomorphism in regards to death, anthropology, etc. then the book drops off the deep end and the author adds in her own little pet project with letters 'people' wrote about their own experiences with 'azrael', or 'the angel of death'. it sounds like people when they get together and talk about area 51 and little green/grey/bug-eyed men/alien encounters - if they truly are different people and not just her, the author, posing to be other people as the writing all sounds the same. honestly i couldn't finish the letters portion, it was that horrible. the book would have been decent, though some parts were a bit off, if it had just been part one, and an expansion upon part one. her little project ruined the whole thing, and how she managed to get supposedly grown men from texas to write like waify teenage goth chicks is beyond me.

Not even worthy of one star. The "author" not only gets various mythologies about death wrong, but she also shared "encounters with death" that are pointless and belong on an Ancient Aliens-style show. What a waste of my money.

I wish I'd skimmed through more of this book before purchasing it from The Strand. It isn't worthy of any bookstore's shelves.

Fun thing if you do not expect a rational death studies research
