There’s one more This former classmate of his, now a nun, was his personal bully at the academy—and she’s irritatingly gorgeous. Now they have to put differences aside to get the job done, facing goblins, monsters, and the perils of the wilderness together. As a relationship develops between the pair, how will Samuel manage his nightly duties to his succubi in tandem with his complex feelings for his childhood bully?
Succubus Summoner: A High Fantasy Romance Reviews

Dnf 40% in. Maybe one day I'll come back and read this, but the MC was really not to my liking at all. He was this really annoying dichotomy of simp+know-it-all and the quirky, bumbling attitude felt more annoying than endearing. Also there really was jack shit for world building or any explanation of how or why magic worked, it felt like we came into the story part of the way through. Virgil knightly has gotten really popular lately, but for the most part I really have a hard time with any of the MCs he writes, I either love them or more commonly detest them, no middle ground unfortunately.

As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.
“Succubus Summoner” is a very enjoyable book with terrific narration. The VA’s have worked well together on another fantasy trilogy, and their voices are just right for this fantasy book/series too. One thing that was different for the narration is that Faye voiced the third-person omniscient narrator role (Tom served as narrator for the other trilogy). I really liked Faye’s voice, and was glad to listen to her as narrator as well performing the voices for the female roles.
As the Publisher’s Summary says, MCs Samuel and Aurora have a personal history that would likely make a two-week journey together unpleasant for both of them. Interestingly, the author responded to criticism on Reddit of Samuel as indicating he wrote the character as an arc, progressing from being an asshole to being a better person. Personally, I never found Samuel to be an ass. Though he was a Duke’s son, he was kind to his valet, and upon being paired with Aurora for the trip he immediately went out of his way to be pleasant to her. If anything, it was Aurora who progressed from unprovoked bitchiness to being a pleasant person. Her arc was explained during the story, so I won’t add any spoilers here.
Samuel’s magical ability to summon creatures that turn out to all be horny succubi was handled very well. While there are several enjoyable scenes of his, errr…fulfilling his responsibility to feed the succubi, the authors gave each of the succubi distinct personalities, and Samuel was initially hesitant to enjoy time with them. The succubi had roles beyond being his personal sex toys. He even constantly told Aurora “I’m not a pervert”! I particularly liked Aurora’s growing acceptance of the succubi, compared to her reaction upon finding Samuel with a pretty redheaded tavern girl.
On the way to the city of Eldruna, Samuel and Aurora banter and get to know each other better (but not THAT much better!), and find themselves battling monsters that are oddly far removed from their natural habitats. They also encounter old friends now in the military, on their way for maneuvers that sound suspiciously like war is brewing.
No spoilers, but upon meeting the Runescribe Ilmora, Samuel and Aurora learns much about why he can summon succubi, with the promise of learning much much more. Aurora is abruptly separated from Samuel and summoned to the convent to meet with the Bishop.
Ahhh….and now the story shifts from a gentle slice-of-life story to a true fantasy adventure, replete with conflicts and corruption involving politics, religion and magical beings. I was surprised to read on Reddit that several folks strongly disliked this turn of events; I loved it! The machinations, the battles and the unexpected new roles for Samuel and Aurora were well portrayed, and I’m very excited for book 2 in this series! -
The combination of Virgil Knightley and Annabelle Hawthorne is becoming one of my favorite collaboration of all time, both their series so far have been wonderful.
Good overall story with good pacing that sets up the world and characters. The main character while a bit annoying at first with all his hesitation really starts coming in on his own as the series progresses and he starts to embrace his legacy and what he is. This is basically a story of a summoner world where our characters powers take on a bit of a weird turn; basically no matter what type of creature he tries to summon it will turn out to be a variation of a succubus. The summons/girls are all great and fun to be around, what's not to love from succubi that take on traits from the various animals he tried to initially summon. Ilmora on the other hand is a bit of a bitch at the start of the story but she starts growing on you as she progresses as a characters as the story advances. Naturally things are not as simple as they seam and we start uncovering more plots, secrets, and intrigues as we slowly uncover the true history. But that's enough of the story, wouldn't want to spoil it.
What the series could use a bit more is a bit more "feeding" action, don't neglect your succubi, that's abuse, lol. The ending could also have been made a tad longer so we could get a closure, or better said completion, on the relationship between Ilmora and Samuel which has been left for book 2 from what I can see. Other than this can't complain much about anything.
The narration is also spectacular, I highly recommend the audiobook version for this book. The main character is voiced with passion, a thing I'm starting to see being done better and better in the genre compared to the past. The women are absolutely lovely and each feel very distinct. And the best part - the voice of narration is done by the female voice, a thing I'm starting to like more and more, and hope that more casts pick up on. It's so much pleasurable to have it done like this in this genre.
Overall it has been a great read, and I'm anxiously waiting for the next book in the series. -
At my request I received a copy of this audiobook in order to give a fair and unbiased review.
Genre: Fantasy, romantic harem, Succubus summoning MC.
Power dynamics in harem: All the girls trust and lust for MC, but act according to own needs and wants at times
Explicit/adult material: Explicit and good. Bunny succubus, Hellhound succubus, spider succubi.
Summary:
Samuel has finally reached the end of his summoner education and plans to summon a bunny for his exam. Exams are high stakes, and any summoning will do. Things does however not go to plan.
Instead of a bunny a bunny-succubus materialises and things get awkward fast. Soon he is sent off on a journey under the protection of his childhood bully to figure out why Samuel only seems to summon Succubi.
Narrators
Voice diversity: Fantastic voicework. The voices are distinct, match the character and are super engaging.
Pacing and intonation: The lulls are cozy, the passion is passionate and the action had me at the edge of my seat. Expert storytellers at wok.
Sex scenes: Very well done.
Overall: 5 / 5 stars.
The book’s strengths.
- The relationships feel natural and grow and change at natural paces
- All the main characters are likeable and feel rounded and real.
- The banter is awesome.
- The writing is top notch, funny and engaging.
- The narration.
The book’s weaknesses.
- None that I can think of. Maybe I would like it to be a bit longer?
Overall: 5/5 stars -
Pathetic and Boring
This novel was pathetic and boring I mean I got about...20%-25% through the book and I had to finally stop because I got so tired of this stupid nun female main character snippy and snide with a chip on her shoulder I got so sick of her in the book that I was hoping she would get killed. I mean come on this is supposed to be a book about harems and succubus and here she is snippy and being arrogant with him every time he summons 1 of them it is so stupid. What is this writer's problem that he writes such a main character who has no backbone and no spine whatever to put her in her place. This book is a very hard pass if you like books about sex and harems and succubus you better pass on this book or you will get frustrated and angry with it. I mean honestly reading this book I hope all the main characters get killed because they deserve it. -
Whatever these two authors are doing to work together, they should keep at it. This was an excellent book, as have been the last several that they have done together.
I have been juggling books of late, as few of them hold my attention very well; this one did. Characters, writing, all of it is well done, arguably better than the authors do individually. I even found the sex well modulated to the story, something many books of this type have trouble with. The fact that I read them, as opposed to skipping them for being over-long is my measure of that.
Anyway, if the blurb appeals, you should read this. -
Virgil and Annabelle make a greatest team
This story is a bit more playful than Master Class and focuses on a slowly building a romance between two ambivalent characters. Not exactly a harem books even though an odd succubus or two is in the mix. Only gets four stars because Master Class is so darned good. Please read if you like Virgil and Annabelle collaborations. Read all their other stuff too. -
Absolutely great story
When you take two excellent authors and combine them in one one you get magic.
This was honestly, a really well written story. MC is not OP and is just a summoner with a different type of magic then others.
Very much enjoyed the character building and the relationship between the two main characters. Can’t wait for book 2. Can’t come soon enough. -
horrible
I forced myself half way and couldn’t finish it.So much potential pissed away.Aurora treats him like shit his whole childhood and most of the trip. Then she gets a free pass from the author from being a raging cunt bitch and all is good.Fu** that noise.Mc is a walking brainless dildo. I would of let the goblins have aurora and enjoy the whole trip in blissful silence. -
Outstanding
I honestly didn't think it was going to be any good from the preview. But this is a great book. This team of writers is just smashing it with some outstanding books recently, more please 🙏 -
unexpected fun
Had no idea one could write a tasteful and fun story about a guy who can only summon succubi. I am looking foreword to the next installment, which I hope won’t be too long coming. -
Very good book
This is a fine fantasy harem adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like the pig. I anxiously await the sequel.
