What began as a spiritual has developed into one of America's best-known songs, and now for the first time it appears as a picture book, masterfully created by award-winning artist Kadir Nelson.
Through sublime landscapes and warm images of a boy and his family, Kadir has created a dazzling, intimate interpretation, one that rejoices in the connectedness of people and nature.Inspired by the song's simple message, Kadir sought to capture the joy of living in and engaging with the world. Most importantly, he wished to portray the world as a child might see it--vast and beautiful.

Kadin Nelson’s He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands is a beautifully illustrated book based solely on the song. Wonder way to repurpose a uniting tune.

During a church service where children have often used books, this was incorporated as the praise song for the day sung by the Pastor and their children via zoom.

This was a pleasant surprise while visiting this church that records their service for rebroadcast I enjoy watching outside my service at my church.

The illustrations are beautifully painted. The book was so fun since it was sung. Reminding me of my teaching days and books I'm writing meant to be sing-along songbooks.

This reminds me of meeting Peter Yarrow with my son at Barnes and Noble where he did a book signing of Puff the Magic Dragon. Based solely on the song.

The illustrations from the book tell the rest of the story where we believe the dragon dies.

Jackie Draper’s child brings Puff back to life when connecting to the story in a new way.

This old song is renewed through this new connection.

Whether for class, music, church, or a family reading at home I recommend this book. Which can also be used to study history, old songs made new, and for children to illustrate a song they like for cross-curriculum activities.

If you have young children or are engaged with them for school or childcare check out Sandra Boyton’s Barnyard Dance. Don't just read the book call it like a barnyard dance.

Do a little square dance while singing along. If you don't know what square dancing is YouTube can help. The children can practice this during recess or coordinate with their gym class.

Books that engage children are way more fun with connections to movement and group participation. My students would laugh and had so much fun when stimulated to connect to cross-curriculum opportunities beyond the reading.

This is a typical song book. If you know the song "He's got the whole world in his hands," then you know the whole book. However, the illustrations are BREATH TAKING! Oh. My. Goodness. I don't like spiritual books, even if they just subtly say He or Him to refer to god, but I'd own this book just for the beautiful pictures.

Unfortunately, I now have that darn song stuck in my head!

    The illustrations are just gorgeous!

Kadir Nelson beautifully illustrates the spiritual "He's Got the Whole World in his Hands". This book reminds me of one of my favorite activities as a child. In 3rd grade our music teacher had us listen to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and we were all given a lyric to illustrate. I got the line "They'll learn much more than I'll ever know" and drew a child bringing home an A paper to their mom. Then all of the parents and kids got together and the music teacher did a slide show of our illustrations while the song played. I was so proud. Reading this book brought back that memory and I love it even more for that.

When I plucked this book off the shelf and saw the picture of the little boy smiling on the cover, I couldn't refuse to put it down. What an adorable book! This would be a great book for a child who is exploring their religion and wants to see and feel a deeper connection. I love that the book is the lyrics to the song "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" because it's up to the reader(s) to decide whether they want to read or sing the lyrics.
Topics: religion, music, singing, God, world, geography, space, family, other cultures, faith, praying.

I've decided to read 29 children's book during Black History month 2016. This was book #27. He's Got the Whole World in His Hands by Kadir Nelson. Nelson also illustrated this book using the lens of a child. The artwork is vivid, colorful and impactful to the story. The historical significance of the song is described at the end. Wonderful display of our African American culture.

Really the most gorgeous, big illustrations, and a lovely feel-good, sing-along book.

Kadir Nelson's continued perfection of noted, influential pieces of history is once again portrayed in "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" is a book written, and illustrated, by Kadir Nelson. From the cover, the reader knows that what is to come once they open the book, is beautifully done work by Kadir Nelson. Nelson takes the spiritual, made well-know song by most Americans, into an illustrated picture book. He breaks down the song and illustrates different parts of it through the eyes of a little boy and his family. Nelson's depictions of a young, African American child, simply living life with his family, showcases the gifts we, as Americans, call freedom and hope. The placement of the text over his oil paintings emphasizes the importance of each and every line of the song, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." Nelson also draws on the need of everyone to connect with nature as a method to showcase the song even more effectively through his illustrations. Well done and astonishingly great work from Nelson. A must have of every educator as a read aloud or as a book for a classroom collection.

This book is an illustrated interpretation of the well-known spiritual "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." Kadir Nelson's illustrations provide both a broad world-view that is often thought of with this song, as well as providing an intimate interpretation through the main character and his family. The first page features a NASA-like image of the sun just peeking over the earth as seen from space, with the words, "He's got the whole world in His hands." Combined with this majestic image are pages that focus on family connections. A second refrain of "He's got the whole world in his hands" is a close-up of child's drawing showing family holding hands. The edges of the picture show the boy's fingers holding the picture; his family is his whole world.

This book would be great to use during a music class or to feature in a Sunday school lesson. It could also be used as a mentor text for personal narrative writing that is focused on small moments.

Even though there is a "He" and the implication is that it's God, and I'm agnostic/secular/humanist, I feel comfortable reading this aloud (well, singing this aloud) at story time, because in each luminous and amazing illustration, there is a "he" who fits the text, as an ordinary human being as well.

And even though I've read another beautiful version that uses "We"
We've Got the Whole World in Our Hands, Nelson's images that focus on a black boy and a black dad are so unique and so beautiful, and the text can be sung without alteration as you turn the pages, that I use this one.

I think it's a treat for the kids at story time to see these beautiful images, which work well even in a large group.

Kadir Nelson has assembled an exquisite collection of illustrations to enhance the well-known and oft-sung lyrics to the very old, but timeless spiritual, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands. Nelson depicts the larger world perspective of one African-American family as they relate to each other and their community, which in this case is the beautiful city of San Francisco. With each and every publication, I continue to adore the contribution Mr. Nelson makes to children's illustrated books.

A fantastic children's picture book that illustrates the spiritual, later folk song of the title, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands by Kadir Nelson is a stunning mix of oil paints, colored pencil drawings and watercolors. Zooming in to kid-like pictures of a family and out to vast starry night skies and a father and son, realistic close ups of a black family where you can see the brush strokes on the faces showing love for one another to the kid like looking chalk outlines of continents and the family standing atop them, the mixture and vibrancy of the pages is a celebration. I hummed through each page (I dare you to try and read it and not hear the song playing through your head) and then sang out loud when I came to the end and the lyrics and music were printed on a final page. A nice afterword gives a few paragraphs history of the song. With not a child in sight in my home, I'd happily own a copy of this and buy it for friends' children or a niece or nephew.

Comment/Used: This is a beautiful book that has the song "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" with beautiful and impactful illustrations to show through a boys' point of view. Each illustration goes with their lyric written on the page. I think this would be a great read aloud book where the class could sing it together afterwards to build classroom community

THIS BOOK WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! The illustrations took my break away and I didn’t think they could get better as I read- but they did! This book would be amazing for a Sunday school or even to sing to your own child while they grow up. I wish I could read this in a public school setting, but I am not sure since it is singing about God. I absolutely love the message that God doesn’t just celebrate one area of the world but ALL of it and we are all held by him.

This book too me was so simple yet so good. It shows that any child can do anything in this world. The world and our future is in our hands and this puts that idea out there for kids to use there imagination and see what they want to do in life. I also love the imagery in this book because it is so detailed and well done. It also at the end gives a musical side to the book where if a kid musically inclined could connect well to this story.

I wanted to investigate picture books by black authors featuring black children. This was one that I found on a list of recommendations & it was beautiful. It was full of joy and artwork of only people of color. The text was simply the lyrics to the song of the same name.

    Would recommend for all kids!
