Visually unique and utterly bizarre, Haunted by desire stands out from other manhwas in terms of creativity. This is a tell of love for all eternity that begins in ancient Korea and ends up in the modern days. Here is a bit of what happens: two young men called Dowhi and Sungjae love each other secretly. Sungjae starts dreaming of sleeping with a demon who looks like his friend but sucks his life energy. Dowhi is latter revealed to be a “ghost child” with uncanny powers, Sungjae’s dark possession being the expression of his yearning for him. As Dowhi learns to control his gift to protect his beloved, his journey leads him to the underworld. He is charged by the King of the afterlife to hunt evil spirits under the guidance of a fellow grim reaper. But the more Dowhi steals souls, the more he becomes immortal. How will he survive centuries of loneliness without Sungjae?

The story is like a creepy fever dream which captures the interplay between the beautiful and the monstrous. Each panel look like a traditional ink-and-wash painting on rice paper, the artist using light hues to add transparency to the cloths and create an ethereal atmosphere. But in the next gruesome panel, the depiction of hungry ghosts in dense red seems straight out of a hell scroll. One of the most amazing sequences happens as Dowhi exorcises the demon who has been harassing Sungjae by merging him into a flowering plum tree. The scene literally gave me the shivers.

Just check the trigger warnings before reading. This story has a certain darkness that I love and long for in manhwas, it shows you where obsession or revenge might lead. But give this a try if you are looking for reincarnation romance. There are three intense, intertangled love stories between spirits and mortals. Sooyeon and Beom are my favorite couple – Dowhi and Sungjae are too much vanilla, and I’m comfortable with fictional incest between step-brothers. Both of them are well matched twisted individuals, but very much in love. I despised Beom in the beginning, but began to like him as the story went along. His biggest fear is simply losing his brother and it ends up destroying him. I love his character transformation and how he lavishes care and attention to Sooyeon in their next lives. I feel like at the end Sooyeon and Beom finally get some peace to be like any other couple, even if they still can’t show their love in public. And their sex scenes in the modern extras, when Sooyeon is CEO Beom’s little brother and they have private meetings in his office at the top, tick off all my favorite kinks.

I’m hoping for a reboot series about Joohwan and the ghost king, because they’re the only couple left with unfinished business at the end. Their past story is revealed in bits and pieces over a stylised dream sequence playing out like a succession of mini theatre pieces – the whole thing is delightfully spooky and aesthetic. But modern Joohwan has become a shady shaman and the king his servant. I need more of their weird business collaboration with otherwordly sex benefits.

Bastante creepy.
